Winter Clothing
With the arrival of colder temperatures, please ensure that your child is
dressed adequately for winter weather conditions. Students must
have snow pants, winter jacket, mitts, toque and winter boots. These
are not optional for grade 3 students. All students are expected to go
outside for recesses and lunch so please ensure they are dressed
appropriately for the weather. Fall hoodies are not keeping students
warm enough anymore.

Scholastic Book Orders

Scholastic Book Orders go home on a monthly basis. Ordering from
them is optional. November book orders are due on or before
November 10th. No late orders will be accepted. Please pay with a
cheque if possible.

Mathletics
Students have access to an educational math support program on-line.
The school has subscribed to Mathletics, which is accessible to

students 24-7. Students have written their user names and passwords
in their agendas to refer to for log in purposes when they are at home.
Students can go to the WES website and find the link to Mathletics
under the Student section.

Home Reading / Math Practice

Beginning this week, we will be switching our incentive for doing home
reading to an incentive for doing math practice at home. Now that we
have started our new unit on Addition and Subtraction, we are
encouraging students to practice their basic math facts at home on a
regular basis. Students will be practicing for speed and accuracy.
There are many ways that a student can practice their math. The
following are just some ideas for practicing:
Mathletics
Online games
Flashcards
Dice games
Worksheets
Each day that your child practices their math facts at home (10-15
minutes), please write in their agenda did math and they will receive
their punch on their punch card.
We are currently doing a novel study in class along with Guided
Reading so students are getting regular reading practice at school.
Feel free to continue having your child read at home for further
practice and support.

Curriculum Updates
Math
We have recently completed our unit on Numbers to 1 000. We have
started our new unit on Addition and Subtraction. Students will be
expected to:
Use strategies to recall basic addition and subtraction facts
Solve addition and subtraction equations
Estimate sums and differences for 2-digit numbers
Add and subtract 2-digit numbers mentally
Use personal strategies to add and subtract numbers with
up to 3 digits
Write and solve addition and subtraction problems
I cannot emphasize enough, the importance of students practicing
their basic math facts at least 3 times per week.
Language Arts

We have started a novel study on James and the Giant Peach. We are
doing various activities focused on this novel to further support and
develop our reading and comprehension skills.
Social Studies
We are currently doing an in depth study of Peru. Students are
learning about various aspects of life in Peru as they compare them to
the way we live here in Westlock, Alberta, Canada.
Science
We have recently completed our unit on Rocks and Minerals. We will
now be exploring Hearing and Sound.
Progress Reports
Progress Reports go home on Thursday, November 20th. If you have
any questions or concerns regarding your childs progress report,
please do not hesitate to contact me at school. Our next parentteacher-student conferences are not scheduled until March, however, I
am available to meet anytime throughout the year.

Toonies For Toys

As we head into the Christmas season, the unfortunate reality is that
many children in our area are not fortunate enough to celebrate with
gifts.
You may have already heard from your children that Discovery Toys is
running a TOONIES FOR TOYS fundraiser where the staff, students and
families of Westlock Elementary School are asked to collect toonies
from November 1 20 to help buy toys for Santas Anonymous. With
the monies collected, fun and educational toys for all ages of children
will be purchased from Discovery Toys on behalf of Westlock
Elementary School and Mrs. Gail Abrams will be donating her
commissions in order to maximize the donations. The toys will be
delivered to FCSS in time for Christmas.
All of the toys are nonviolent, safe and come with a lifetime guarantee.
And because Discovery Toys are designed with the child in mind, they
build self-esteem through play. Just think, if every student and staff
member brought in at least one toonie there would be over $1000 in
new toys donated.

McDonalds Receipts
If parents, staff and students of Westlock Elementary collect
McDonalds receipts from the Westlock, Spruce Grove, and/or Stony
Plain restaurants (the 3 stores owned by Perry and Terry Rebagliati),
they will cut WES a cheque for 10% of the total receipts to a maximum

of $500no strings attached. Please send in any / all of your

McDonalds receipts to the school office. We will continue to do this
throughout the school year.

Sincerely,
Miss Carnegie
