INTRODUCTION
Our project is actually an IR decoder circuit. This is aimed at controlling a maximum of 8
switching appliances by just using a Phillips TV remote or any remote supporting RC5
protocol.
Normal circuits can switch only one device but the IR circuit we developed can control 8
devices which are interfaced to the microcontroller. These devices are switched using the
remote keypad 1-8.The circuit consist of an IR transmitter which is the TV remote. The
receiver used here is TSOP 1736 which are capable of receiving pulsed IR rays of only
36kHz.The role of the decoder is played by the microcontroller AT89C2051 which will sense
the demodulated output from the receiver and decodes it. Thus it can control the inputs and
outputs.ULN2803 relay driver ICs are used here to provide an interface between the low
logic level interfaces and higher current/voltage devices such as relays, solenoids, motors
and lamps.
One of the major advantages of this circuit is to control any appliances by just being
in our living room. A major disadvantage is that obstacles on the path of IR rays can block its
remote sensing capabilities.

Project Overview
This project is meant to control 8 electrical appliances that are interfaced to this circuit.
The components used here include the following:
* Phillips TV remote * TSOP 1736 * AT89C2051 * ULN2803 * Relays * Electrical
appliances
The TV remote which acts as an IR transmitter is capable of controlling the
on/off process of 8 appliances connected in this circuit. The devices are operated using
the keypads 1-8. TSOP 1736 is used as the IR receiver here. These are capable of
receiving pulsed IR rays of only 36kHz and would ignore any other signals.. Here what is
being done is that in order to exclude other IR sources like sun, light bulbs etc, IR signal
is modulated by a carrier frequency of 36kHz within the remote control and this carrier
frequency is removed and the original pulses are retrieved with the help of receiver. The
demodulated output can be directly decoded by the AT89C2051 microcontroller. The
output from the receiver will be sensed and decoded using this microcontroller. Thus it
controls the input and output. ULN 2803 buffer is used to drive relays. It is well suited to
provide an interface between the low logic level interfaces and higher current/voltage
devices such as relays, solenoids, motors and lamps.

Microcontroller AT89C2051
The AT89C2051 is a low-voltage, high-performance CMOS 8-bit microcomputer with
2K bytes of Flash programmable and erasable read-only memory (PEROM). The
device is manufactured using Atmels high-density nonvolatile memory technology
and is compatible with the industry-standard MCS-51 instruction set. By combining a
versatile 8-bit CPU with Flash on a monolithic chip, the Atmel AT89C2051 is a powerful
microcomputer which provides a highly-flexible and cost-effective solution to many
embedded control applications.
The AT89C2051 provides the following standard features: 2K bytes of Flash, 128
bytes of RAM, 15 I/O lines, two 16-bit timer/counters, a five vector two-level interrupt
architecture, a full duplex serial port, a precision analog comparator, on-chip oscillator
and clock circuitry. In addition, the AT89C2051 is designed with static logic for operation
down to zero frequency and supports two software selectable power saving
modes. The Idle Mode stops the CPU while allowing the RAM, timer/counters, serial
port and interrupt system to continue functioning. The power-down mode saves the
RAM contents but freezes the oscillator disabling all other chip functions until the next
hardware reset.
