3.NF.

1 Understand a fraction as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into equal
parts; understand a fraction as the quantity formed by parts of size.
3.NF.2 Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions on a number line.

Vocabulary-Fraction, Numerator, Denominator, Equal Parts, Number Line

Day 1: By the end of the lesson you will be able to identify what a fraction is, why
we use fractions, and how to correctly find the numerator and denominator of a
fraction through practice with learn zillion and the anchor chart.
Hook: What is a fraction? Why do we use fractions? When would you need to
use fractions?
Mini Lesson:
Watch video to help understand of terminology:
https://learnzillion.com/lessons/72-recognize-fractions-breaking-shapes-intoequal-parts

Talk about the names of the fraction parts: (Make Anchor Chart)

Denominator - The total number of parts that are in the whole.

Numerator- tells the number of parts that you have or are talking about.
Guided Practice:

Go over PowerPoint called Fraction Action. This has fractions of the slides for

students to answer on their smart boards whole class.
Partner Practice:

Identifying fractions with a partner.

Paper/Pencil: Determining Fraction Visuals.

Day 2: By the end of this lesson students will be able to write fractions, the students
will use their gummies and sort them into colors to identify the fractions.
Parts of a whole-Numerator and Denominator Write Fractions
Hook:

We are going to write fractions with the food that we eat!
Mini Lesson:

Did we learn anything new from yesterday and writing fractions?

https://learnzillion.com/lesson_plans/8070-write-fractions-with-anumerator-other-than-one#

What did we learn from the video?

*This can be found on the PowerPoint. It is continued from yesterday.
Guided Practice:

Give students a bag of gummy fruit snacks with an assorted variety of flavors.

Tell them that they may NOT eat to gummies until we are finished with the

activity.

The students will be finding the fraction of gummies in their bag for EACH

color of gummies. They will write down their fractions on paper that will be

turned into the teacher when completed.

Check with tablemate when finished with writing down fractions. (If you are

not sure if you are correct you need to check with teacher. (This may take all

of your time, plan on working through partner time)
Partner Practice:

No activity today work through this time with the whole class.
Day 3: Students will know from watching learn zillion videos and working with
manipulatives that fractions can be found on a number line.
A Fraction on a number line. (Part of a whole but less than one.)
Hook:

Draw a number line on the board. Ask the students if they think there is any

numbers in between 0 and 1.

Yes there are many numbers that can be placed in between 0 and 1 on the

number line and we are going to explore them.

line-1

Guided Practice:

*Take a strip of paper. Label your paper like a number line.

-Have students put 0 on the left hand side of the paper and put 1 on the other

side.

-Students should be labeling and folding the fractions with the teacher. (1/2,

1/3, , 1/6)

*Keep this fraction strip in your math folder to refer back to. (This strip will

help you with comparing fractions later.)
Partner Activity:

Partition into 6 equal pieces and label each partition.

Go over first question with students to help them understand expectations

on this worksheet. It will be very similar to the guided practice.

Day 4: Students will know through exploration with previous knowledge and learn
zillion video that they can put fractions like or 5/6 on a number line.
A Fraction on the number line
Hook:

Review what they did yesterday. Putting the fraction on the number line.

Give the students a challenging problem to get them thinking.

If you know what is on a number line what do you think we would do to

find on a number line. (Think about what you know about numerators.)
Mini Lesson:

Watch the video.

Guided Practice:

/3nf1
This is an interactive worksheet. The students would be making fractions on the
computer and also on their white boards.
*Students with white boards HAVE to write the number line.
Have students think about the fraction as being in between 0 and 1 on the website
because it doesnt have a number line on the site. (Draw on the Smart Board the 0
and 1 to represent the number line.)

Partner Activity:
