CONSTITUTION

The Young Democrats of Berry College


I.

Name, Affiliation, and Purpose


A. The name of this organization shall be the Young Democrats of Berry College.
1. The use of Young Democrats in reference to this organization shall be interchangeable with
that of College Democrats.
B. This organization shall be affiliated with the Young Democrats of Georgia, (hereinafter referred to as the
YDG), the Young Democrats of America (YDA), College Democrats of Georgia (CDG), the College
Democrats of America (CDA), the Democratic Party of Georgia (DPG), and the National Democratic
Party (DP).
C. The purpose of this organization shall be to promote the principles and candidates of the Democratic party
at the local, state, and national level.

II.

Membership
A. Membership shall be open to all registered students of Berry College.
B. Membership dues shall be determined at the discretion of the Executive Board.

III.

Officers
A. The Officers shall be the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, the Student Government
Association (SGA) Representative, and the Advisor.
B. The officers shall be elected by a majority vote of the membership at a regularly scheduled meeting
during the spring semester of the academic year, but no later than April 1st.
C. All officers must have a minimum 2.0 Berry Cumulative GPA to serve.
D. The membership may, by a two-thirds vote, remove any officer on sufficient grounds.
1. Sufficient grounds include but are not limited to:
a) Malfeasance
b) Gross violation of the constitution of the Young Democrats of Berry College and/or the
constitutions and/or charters of the aforementioned affiliated organizations.
c) Failure to maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA.
E. The duties of the President shall be:
1. To preside over meetings;
2. To develop programs to increase the organizations membership;
3. To develop programs designed to inform the membership and the campus as a whole;
4. To be the official representative of the organization at functions affiliated with the YDA, YDG,
CDA, CDG, and the DP;
5. To exercise the power of interim appointment should a leadership vacancy arise;
6. To perform other such duties as the membership may assign.
F.

The duties of the Vice President shall be:


1. To assist the President in the performance of their duties;
2. To preside over meeting in the Presidents absence or at their discretion;
3. To coordinate publicity for upcoming meetings as well as events sponsored by the Berry College
Young Democrats;
4. To perform other such duties as the Executive Board or Membership may assign.

G. The duties of the Secretary shall be:

To keep and maintain records for the organization;


To record and distribute minutes for all meetings held by the organization;
To conduct the official correspondence of the organization;
To maintain accurate membership records of the organization;
To perform other such duties as the Executive Board or Membership may assign.

H. The duties of the Treasurer shall be:


1. To keep records of all financial transactions for the organization;
2. To maintain accurate records of all payments to be paid by members;
3. To perform other such duties as the Executive Board or Membership may assign.
I.

The duties of the SGA Representative shall be:


1. To represent the Berry College Young Democrats at all Student Government Association
meetings;
2. To inform the Executive Board and the membership of all decisions made by the body of SGA in
conjunction with the SGA executive board that affect not only the organization but student life as
well.
3. To maintain accurate records of the SGA requirements, which include but are not limited to the
completion of membership and volunteer credits.
4. To perform other such duties as the Executive Board or Membership may assign.

J. The duties of the Advisor(s) shall be:


1. To provide guidance to officers as needed.
2. To serve as a liaison with the administration.
K. If a leadership position becomes vacant, either by resignation, removal, or death, the Executive Board, at
their discretion, shall allow the President to exercise the power of interim appointment until the next
election of officers or hold a special election at the next regularly scheduled meeting in which the vacancy
is filled by a majority vote of the membership.

IV.

Executive Board
A. The Executive Board shall consist of the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, the SGA
Representative, and the adviser.
B. The Board shall meet before the regularly scheduled meeting of the body to set the meetings agenda as
well as address any emergency issues that affect the functions of the organization.
C. The status of dues shall be decided at the discretion of the Executive Board.

V.

Meetings
A. The President shall call all meetings to order, unless designated to the Vice President due to the
Presidents absence.
B. Meetings shall be held in order to conduct organizational business on a regular basis, but not less than
once per month.
C. The time in place of the meetings shall be determined at the discretion of the Executive Board with the
consideration of the memberships availability.
D. A quorum of three active members, not including the Executive Board, shall be present to hold a meeting.

VI.

Parliamentary Authority
A. The latest edition of Roberts Rule of Order shall govern the organization unless otherwise specified in
the constitution.

VII.

Amendments
A. All amendments to the constitution and bylaws, must be presented to the Executive Board for approval
before being presented to the membership body.
B. Upon approval by the Executive Board, it shall be presented to the body and require a two-thirds vote in
affirmation by the members present.
C. Upon approval by the body, the Executive Board shall submit the changes to the Student Activities
Office and the appropriate Young Democrat affiliate for official adoption.
D. Initial approval of the Constitution must be given by the President upon recommendation of the Student
Life Council.
