Project 1: Video/DVD Analysis

The video I chose is about Helen Keller and the way she interacts and
communicates with things. Growing up she wasnt able to pronounce words or do
anything because of her disabilities she had. Her parents hired her a teacher to show
her how to communicate by using sign language. In this video it shows how it was her
second time pronouncing water by saying wa wa and by also touching the water that
was pouring on to her hands. After, Helen keller started to do face-to-face interactions
with her teacher by pointing at objects, and feeling them to be able to know what they
were. Keller would spell them out doing sign language when she would touch the object.
The teacher was observing her noticing that she knew what the objects were after
touching them. Her communication with others was different because she would
communicate by doing sign language.
I believe that Comte, Marx and Durkheim would view this video as a way of how
society as a whole has many resources that can help people communicate in different
ways. Auguste Comte, would view this as positivism because of the way the teacher
would observe the norms of keller when she would interact with something. The
scientific method also has something to do with this because the teacher was trying
many different methods so that helen keller would be able to understand the concepts
better. They would agree that this video connects with macrosociology and
microsociology because it focuses on society and how social forces shape lives. Also, it

analysis the study of experiences and interactions. It shows the significant of how we
see others and how they see us. Durkheim has a theory that said, The presupposition
that we find meaning in life through our interconnections with others. The more
interconnected and interdependent we feel, the less likely we are to kill ourselves. his
theory would apply to the video because Helen Keller had many disabilities that would
actually make a person feel worthless because they arent able to do anything. I believe
he would view this in that perspective, but she had the support from her parents and
was able to get a teacher so she would be able to socialize with society. They wouldve
of said this was like folkways which are norms governing everyday behavior. From their
perspective I think they would see it as an experiment to demonstrate the mindset of a
person with disabilities and compare it with a person that doesn't have any type of
disabilities to see how both of them interact with society. Additionally, they would find
this video very helpful to prove something when seeing the reactions and the face
expressions of how Helen Keller gets when she starts recognizing things. Marx, Comte,
and Durkheim would view this and notice that having significant others plays a big role
in a person's life. As you can see in this video she had the support from her teacher,
and her parents and she never gave up even though she suffered from disabilities. The
significant others made her who she turned into, she did not only accomplish many
things but was also very successful. The paradigm that is most represented in this video
I chose would be Symbolic Interactionism because this shows the forms of social
interaction to explain society as a whole. It shows how humans act towards each and
how they communicate to understand each other. In this video they use symbols,

Nonverbal communications, and face-to-face interactions to communicate with one

another. Socializing can be different based on the behavior of the person, Helen Keller
in this video created her social world through interacting in the only way she was able to
interact to be able to communicate with others.
