ACTION PLAN

Racism against Aborigines in Australia

Part 1 Planning
The task
I will have to choose one of the injustices and threats to freedom that are issues in
todays world. I have to promote this issue and challenge the current state of affairs. I
have to imagine that I am part of an activist group and then create a website to express
my views and try to force this change.
What is the issue I have chosen?
The issue I have chosen is the racism, but I will be focusing it on the racism against
Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders in Australia.
Element of issue that I will need to include in my website
Element
Why is it important?
What do I already
What do I need
know?
to find out
What is the
cause of the
racism in
Australia?

Are there laws

that encourage
racism or
oppose it?

This is an important element to

study as it will give the sufficient
knowledge to readers visiting the
website to feel connected to the
issue and take action. It will also
provide them with background
information regarding the roots of
the racism in Australia and why it
must change.

This is important in my activist

website as it allows readers to
know legally the boundaries that
have been put to prevent or
encourage racism. This will give
them the knowledge to
understand how much people
have overstepped the boundaries
of racism and that the racism in
Australia has gone to far. It will
also give them knowledge on how
Australias government has
helped oppose racism in the
country.

The racism began ever

since the British
colonized Australia. The
aboriginals were then
excluded and forced out
to live in some other
part Australia. I think
that because of the
separation of the two
races at the beginning
caused discrimination
today.
I think that there are
some laws that oppose
racism, however I do
not know the specifics
of this law. The law
allows Aborigines to
come forward and
express their complaint
towards any people who
they feel is racially
discriminating them.

How do I find the

Are there

What can we do
to fight against
racism in
Australia, and in
the world?

This is an important element to

study as it allows people to
understand what other people go
through personally and feel the
emotional struggles that racially
discriminated against people feel
in their day to day lives. It may
allow them to make a personal
connection and feel more
passionate towards this cause.
This is one of the most important
aspects of my website as I will
need to inform people on how
they can take action. That way I
can encourage them to make a
change to a serious issue that
affects many people worldwide.

I know that there are

many people who must
suffer constantly from
racism, however I do
not know any real life
examples of these
cases. In order to put
together my website I
need to find some
specific examples.
I know that if I can
promote awareness for
this issue I may be able
to change people who
are prejudice against
aboriginals.

I only completed 4 OPVLs which

was less than I expected meaning
that I could easily finish on time
I did not have enough time to
collect information from my
selected sources as I needed to
obtain enough information for my
entire website.
Due to the fact that I could not
finish the OPVL I am beginning
this step later.
Due to the fact that I could not
finish the webpages in time it led
this step to be done later.
I spent two days working on this
step allowing me to have enough
tie to complete it by this stage
I finished it one day earlier to
insure everything is ready in time.

Part 3: Finding information

What do I need to find out?
I need to get information regarding all of the elements of the issue I will be inquiring into
and using it to put together my website.
How do I find this information?
I will research and record my sources by using an OPVL. I will also record my research
notes on all of the elements on a separate table.

Collecting and recording information

What tools and methods
Why will I use this?
will I use to collect his
information?
Note taking (method)

Summarizing (method)

Easybib (tool)

Word (tool)

This is a very convenient method to help with my research, as it will allow me

to gather information quickly and efficiently from a variety of sources. It will
also prevent me from accidentally copying too much information from a source
leading to plagiarizing.
This is a very useful method for collecting my data, as I cannot put a large
amount of information onto my webpage. By summarizing it, it will reduce the
amount of data I will need to include as too much information on a page will be
boring for viewers, making my website not very effective.
It is very important to source my resources when I am researching and
Easybib is a very effective way for doing that. It is fast and only needs the web
address to create a full citation.
It is important for me to use this tool as it allows me to plan for my website and
to gather the necessary information for it. It serves the purpose for recording
all the information and notes in preparation for assembling my website

A collection of research notes using the methods and tools described above
Issue element
Notes
What is the cause of the
racism in Australia?

- Racism in Australia is linked to its history of colonization and migration.

- Ever since the colonization the original inhabitants were disposed of their land
and were already discriminated against by the first European settlers. For some
Aboriginal people and Torres Straight Islanders the colonization was thought to be
an invasion. Racism has continued to influence the lives of the Aboriginal people
in the centuries following.
- Although many government migration schemes invited people to settle in
Australia, prejudice and discrimination has been aimed at many groups who have
arrived in Australia from language backgrounds other than English.
- Until recent years, recent racist acts and polices were embedded in Australian
laws, the most significant of these were the removal of Aboriginal children from
their families and the denial of full citizenship to the Aboriginal people and the
Torres Strait Islanders. While laws now exist to protect the rights of all citizens
including the Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders there is a lasting influence
and presence from the effects of those racist actions.

Are there laws that

encourage racism or
oppose it?

- The racial discrimination act makes it against the law to treat you unfairly or
discriminate against you, because of your race, colour, descent, national or ethnic
origin, and immigration status
- It aims to ensure that all Australians of all backgrounds have the same
opportunities and are treated equally

- It prevents you against discrimination in many aspects of public life including:

- Employment
- Education
- Accommodation
- Getting or using services
- Accessing public places
- The Australian law makes it illegal for people to engage, encourage or permit
racist acts to happen.
- It is aimed at protecting people who makes complaints about racism
Are there occurrences of
racism in life stories?

Real life case 1: Discrimination by a school teacher

- Some Aboriginal students claimed that when an Aboriginal Studies lesson was
held the class teacher asked students to give words to describe Aboriginal people,
and some students said offensive words. The teacher did not deny the words but
told the students that those were good words and recorded them on the board.
- The teacher denied this saying that the only offensive word used was dirty and
the teacher said that an intellectually disabled student suggested it. The teachers
behavior was denied inappropriate by the teachers employer

Real life case 2: A three-year-old girl was traumatized after being verbally abused
by a woman and her daughter in a shopping center.
- Samara Muir the three year old was queuing with her mother Rachel Muir when
a woman and her two daughters began to verbally abuse her, making racist
comments about her black skin
- One of the womans daughters pointed at young Samara and said youre black
and black is ugly.
- The young girl became very upset. She refused to attend her Aboriginal dance
classes and started to scrub her black skin off by taking baths everyday.
- Her mother says She was requesting to bath every day and she was soaping up
to make herself look white

What can we do to fight

against racism in
Australia, and in the
world?

Whenever you see racism happen to someone else support him or her.
- Go sit next to them, ask if theyre alright. Encourage them to report the incident
or to go talk to a teacher or counselor. Sometimes just showing your support can
make a huge difference.
- Raise awareness on the issue. Create your own campaign poster and display it
in your school, offices or clubs.

Website construction

information across to the
audience?
What is the cause of the
racism in Australia?

I will create a page including videos

and images to show what is the cause
of racism in Australia. It will be made
under the tab of racism.

Are there laws that

encourage racism or
oppose it?

I will create a page under the tab of

about racism and create a webpage
including many facts about the laws
on racism and what can be done
when someone breaks the law.

Are there occurrences of

racism in life stories?

I will create one page on this element,

explaining various cases of
discrimination. I will include images
and quotes of the people involved
with the situation.
I will create two pages to get the
message across to the audience. I will
create a page title what you can do to
describe what you should do when
you see or experience racism and
how you can confront a racist person.
For the second page titled take action
I will create a blog where people can
post posters or comment about
racism.

What can we do to fight

against racism in
Australia, and in the
world?

How can I link the pages together?

I can link this page to racism and the

law, as I will be discussing a little bit
about when laws against acts of
discriminated were first implemented in
history. In addition, I will link the bottom
of this page to what you can do, as it is
the next wepage.
I can link this page with the page on
what you can do, as it will explain what
you can do or how to acknowledge to
the police if someone is racially
discriminated, indicating that it will link
to the laws of racism page. At the
bottom of the page will also be a link to
connect it to the very next page of the
site.
I can link this page with the page titled
what can you do as it will relate to how
you can deal with racist behavior and
how you can stand up to racist people.
This page will be linked to a page
indicated as take action as what you
can do to fight against racism leads you
to actually taking action.

Things that went

well
Overall, I feel that I
have done pretty
well on creating a
good action plan. I
made sure that I
covered all of the
topics and stages
needed to create an
effective website. I
think that it is clear
and well organized,
so that my process
is clearly
demonstrated.

Things that need

improvement
I feel that I could have
followed my action
plan more effectively.
This is because I did
not consistently record
any information onto
my action plan during
the time when I was
creating my website.
This indicates that I
often have to fill in long
sections of missing
information into my
action plan.

Ways of
improvement
To improve on this
I should create a
more condensed
version of my
action plan, with
fewer charts to
complete. That
way I will have
more sufficient
time to complete
all of my research
and I do not have
to constantly
spend a long time
on my action plan.
