As maple sugaring season

approaches, plant ecologist
Kristina Stinson at the
University of Massachusetts
Amherst recently received a
two-year, $149,800 grant to
study the impact of climate
change on the quantity and
quality of sugar maple sap,
including its chemical composition, and of sap from red
maples, a species less sensitive
to climate change.

Wentworth, NH resident,
Rick Wob Warbin, recently
caught this beauty ice fishing
somewhere in NH. Shhhhh...

This gorgeous Northern Pike

was 23.68 pounds and a
whopping 44 1/2 in length.

Rick told us he was on the ice

for 72 hours straight and it
was the only bite he got! It
was caught on a 6 pound test
line and it took him about 45
minutes to reel it in. Rick also
stated that the hole in the ice
was just large enough to get
this big one out of!

He credits his patience and

the bait he bought from
Country Boyz Bait Shop in
Fairlee, VT for the fine catch.

If you watched or heard of

the show Ice Holes on
National Geographic in previous years, Rick was one of
the cast members on that
show.

However, this one was caught

while filming was being done
by
Acheron-OBOL
Productions, which just may
be seen on TV in a future
series. Well keep you posted!
So far, it seems, this fish just
might be the biggest caught
in New England. Well see
how the 2016 fishing season
pans out, but as far as we are
concerned, this one is certainly on track for being the
largest fish caught in NH for
2016. Well let you know...
Rick stated that after 29 years
of marriage to wife Shelly,
and with all the fish he has
brought home, even she had
to give a second look at this
one!

Over the decades, the tapping
season has started earlier and
earlier, Stinson says. Estimates
are that it may now start two
weeks earlier than the traditional date.

She hopes the number of sampling sites will eventually reach

30, representing a variety of
eco-zones. Each will be managed by scientists at colleges
and universities, or by state,
federal and industry technicians, or citizen scientists in
sugaring families. They will
also assess overall tree health.

Stinson says, We hope to be

adding sites all the time, especially by recruiting family
maple producers. Many of them
keep records right in the sugarhouse. Wed love to have them
contribute the data from 50 or
100 years of notches on the sugarhouse walls. That would give
us really helpful information on
the quantity and quality of
syrup produced over the years,
and would help us predict the
effects of climate change going
forward.

pistol-packing women concerned with fashion are not limited to traditional firearms in
ordinary cowboy holsters. One
online company, The WellArmed Woman, offers such
carry options as stylish leggings, lace waistbands and an

an opponent. The player then
fetched the gun from his backpack and ran onto the pitch as
the game was continuing. The
man is said to have shot Flores
three times, once in the neck,
head and chest. It all happened
during the match, said a police
spokesman. We dont know
what happened with the referee,
but the player was angry and
went to get his gun and killed
him. He also allegedly shot
another player in the chest.
While the 25-year-old was

On the more positive side, a

ordered to close, and children
were to remain indoors (and
quiet). [The Local (Madrid)] I
mean, who cant get behind
that?

There are certain stories that

come along that literally make
my insides twist and clench!
This is one of those stories. A
14-year-old basketball player in
Wisconsin slid across the floor
and was unable to get up due to
being impaled by a floorboard.
Video shows the player slide
across the floor on her front and
other players and officials soon
realize the girl cant get up from
the floor. The cause of the players trouble turned out to be
a floorboard that splintered and
impaled her in the stomach area
(arrrgh twist, clench). It was
3 to 4 inches long and in some
parts, maybe a quarter to a half
inch deep, tournament organizer Perry Hibner said. The girl
was taken to a local hospital,
where the splinter was determined to have missed all of her
vital organs. Hibner said the girl
is expected to be back to playing condition this week. The
official said the gym floor was
installed only 15 years ago. Full
repairs are expected this week,
he said.

As we have experienced the

waning of what he once was,
the most common phrase I hear
from others, especially those
who have lost a beloved fourlegged friend recently is
"Cherish every moment."

I know there is kindness in the

offering of the words, but part
of me struggles to shut my
mouth when what I want to say
is, "And makes you think there
was there was ever a day that
wasn't cherished?"

If you were out here during the

mean there won't be sadness

to me, is to see that my friend
lives as fully as possible until
the day comes when it's time to
say goodbye.

Still, all the bravery in the

ice Magic

Last night, the floodlights were

on at my favorite skating lake.
Several children wearing plastic skates and shiny helmets
were gliding on the ice, shepherded by young parents. A
father pulled a Nordic-looking
sled with upturned runners, his
bundled-up cargo insisting,
More! each time he stopped.
They were enjoying one of winters greatest gifts: the smooth,
frozen surfaces of our northern
lakes and ponds.

But ice is not magic. Its chemistry and physics. Ice formation
begins in late summer, when the
upper layer of the lake begins
cooling. In this process, called
turnover, the cooling water
becomes denser and heavier,
sinking toward the bottom and
forcing warmer, lighter water to
the surface. The cooling and
sinking process continues until,
one day in November or
December, the whole lake
reaches 39.2 degrees, the point
at which water reaches its maximum density.

The gift is ephemeral. Some

winters, our skates never leave
the basement. Other years, the
snow holds off and theres
black ice before Christmas. We
skate as much as we can, knowing our days of clear ice are
numbered. As winter progresses, rain may turn the surface to
water but the temperature Once the lake has frozen over,

Anyone who pays attention

Adventures in
Homesteading

a winter Vigil

Cold nights have been few so

far this winter, and Ryan and I
have enjoyed the easy living.
Much of our winter cordwood
still remains, and weve rarely
felt compelled to awake from a
restful slumber in order to stoke
the fire. Not many days ago,
however, the cold gathered
around on harsh arctic gusts.
With Ryan away for a few days,
it was my efforts alone that
would keep Mica and I warm.

On this particular night, the

chill, thrown about by a vigorous wind, was lurking in the
cabin's corners even as I went to
sleep. I awoke at midnight to
the house in the 40s and a partial log still in the woodstove. I
quickly piled in more wood,
shoulders hunched against the

chill and hurried myself back to

the loft. The next time I awoke
it was 4am, the wind roaring as
it whipped off the hills and surrounded our little abode - over,
under, around - our dear woodstove was doing its best to hold
some ground as heat and
warmth evanesced with each
gale. I loaded the stove again,
waiting as it took its time to
crank up. I stepped outside to
grab more wood; instantly the
wind and cold pushed my
breath back into my mouth and
nose. It bit at the tails of my
woolen shirts.

as there is an inside to be
warmed by, outside is simply
uncomfortable. Is that all that
was keeping me attuned to the
woodstove? It is in the wee
hours between night and day
when darkness reigns, when
unimagined gods and goddesses take form, and the roar of
wind tags the cabin, defines my
dreams, and calls me awake;
when the cold creeps in, silently, unobserved, edging closer
and closer to the heart and
hearth of home; then and only
then does this vigil take on
meaning. A beautiful, simple,
urgent, and eternal meaning. In
these moments, outside means
death. Inside means life. The
ravaging winds, the blowing
snow obscuring sight, the dark
of night accentuating helpless-

ness.

Yes, in these moments rekindling that fire, feeding its

flames is not just about a cozy
morning, hot tea, or a good
meal. Rather, it is about those
things and so much more about enjoying them against
other odds, against the power
and nameless pursuit of wind
and cold. It is about understanding - no, about feeling, deeply
intuiting - the total reliance on
flames, wood, and heat to survive.

in these raw winter vigils that

best defines the ultimate joy of
our lifestyle. It is raw. Our
comforts mask survival only
thinly, gauzily. We cannot
ignore how sweet the new day
is, nor how we reached it
through the black, cold night.

If the darkness spanned by such

a vigil opens us to our own wisdom, it also lets us sit with
buried fears, and therefore
births courage, strength, and
passion. Elemental moments

has been published as Haverhill
history. It also includes much
information never previously
published. Some of the more
important inclusions among the
195 entries include books written by William Whitcher, John
Bittinger, Grant Powers, Clark
Perry, Frederick Wells, Harold
Davison, G.W. Buzzell, and
Robert Pillion. It includes some
articles about neighboring
towns that give Haverhill devel-

opments a broader context.

Robert Fillion, publisher of

Haverhill Heritage Books, a
privately funded research and
publishing project, offers local
historical literature devoid of
the myth that is all too common
in local history particularly in
Haverhill. The books point out
errors that have left a distorted
or false view of the past and
provide versions verified from
records and reputable authors.
Pillion holds that if history is
worth knowing it is worth writing correctly; otherwise we
might as well read historical
fiction, which can contain many
nice stories that are far more

interesting.

The HHB project has distributed over 8,000 books in

Haverhill free of charge. The
paper books will continue to be
available as well as the disk.

Fillion, who started the project

30 years ago, wrote 39 of the 50
paper editions that the project
has published and includes in
the encyclopedia. He adheres to
the principle that history is the
knowledge of man's past as we
know it from records that witnesses to the events have created. He admits, however, that in
many cases he has not found
witness-created records, i.e. primary sources, to support his
text. Many records have not
survived. When he has taken

The Summertime Marching
Band of Monroe, NH wants
you! The age range of our current lineup is 11 to over 65. We
currently have about 20 players.
As long as you can march, or be
wheeled in a wheelchair and
play, or safely drive a scooter
and play, you can be in our
band. We play accessible, mostly traditional songs: Grand Old
Flag, When the Saints go
Marching in, Stars and Stripes
Forever, etc. Havent played for
30 years or more? No problem.
The songs are easy to learn and
fun to play. School music teachers- please let your students and
their parents know about this
fun, musical opportunity!

The encyclopedia is available at

40 King Street, Woodsville NH,
at the town clerk's office in
North Haverhill, and at libraries
that choose to distribute the

Dear Friends, God is our Hope! There are

scriptures to help you to understand that. To read
and remind ourselves, that our hope IS in Him.
Ps.62:5, Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope
comes from him. Ps.27:14, Let your hope be in
the Lord: take heart and be strong; yes, let your
hope be in the Lord. Ps.43:5, Why are you cast
down, O my soul? and why are you disturbed
within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him,
who is the health of my countenance, and my
God. Ps.130:7, O Israel, hope in the LORD; for
with the LORD there is unfailing love. His
redemption overflows. Ps.31:24, So be strong and
courageous, all you who put your hope in the
LORD! And there are so many more! You don't
need to live without hope! God is our hope. God
bless you.

of what is a conservationist, and
written not a few myself, but I
suspect that the best one is written not with a pen, but with an
axe. It is a matter of what a man
thinks about while chopping, or
while deciding what to chop. A
conservationist is one who is
humbly aware that with each
stroke he is writing his signature on the face of his land.

Warren Village School Cheer Club Ignites Crowds!

Dressed in smart, blue and white uniforms, members of the
Warren Village School Cheer Club are once again delighting
crowds at home athletic contests. Performing at recent basketball games, the squad, composed of boys and girls in
Kindergarten-8th grade, led cheers and provided exciting halftime shows with tumbling and lifts.

Led by 8th grade students Morgan Kingsbury and Hayley

Perkins and by coach Megan Rebele, the Cheer Club at the
Warren Village School is undergoing a renaissance.

Offered in the past as part of the sports program, the club was
reformed in the spring of 2015 through the leadership of
accomplished 8th grade gymnasts and cheerleaders Morgan
and Hayley. Interested in seeing Cheer offered again at WVS,
students Morgan and Hayley agreed to help the After School
Program rebuild the program.

Since April of 2015, Morgan has organized and facilitated

Cheer Club practice one day a week, showing a tremendous
amount of dedication and commitment from someone so
young. With help from middle schoolers Hayley, Anna
Parsons, Lillie Smith, Megan Sackett, and from cheer coach
Megan Rebele, the team graduated to live performances this
winter at home basketball games.

Performing at games has been a terrific experience for the

young cheer club members, giving them opportunities to build
respect, communication, trust, teamwork, and composure.

Recently I took a walk around

the 1 acres of woods that my
wife and I own. These woods,
as are typical of thousands of
acres of forest in New England,
grew up from land previously
used for agriculture. In this
case it was probably pasture,
since our land is fairly steep and
somewhat rocky. Despite the
small acreage, as I walked
through the woods I noted a
great amount of species diversity. At first glance the trees
seemed to be mostly grey birch,
a pioneer species that is one of
the first to colonize disturbed
sites such as this once was. But
as I looked closer, the number
of different tree species became
clear. Not only grey birch but
white birch, aspen (aka popple
or poplar), balsam fir, white
spruce, cedar, sugar maple, red
osier dogwood, shadbush, and
apple are growing in our
woods. While the birches and
aspens dominate the overstory,
the other trees are quietly growing in the shade, waiting for a
chance to flourish.

A secondary purpose of the

satisfaction from making firewood from my own trees that I

Forrester Honored by
Golden View Health care Seniors

Concord, NH - Senator Jeanie Forrester (R-Meredith) was

honored by Golden View Health Care seniors in Meredith with
the 2015 New Hampshire Health Care Associations Friends
of Seniors Award for her leadership and commitment to serving seniors in New Hampshire.

I am thankful to be the recipient of the 2015 New Hampshire

Health Care Associations Friends of Seniors Award.
Throughout the budget process for the state, I strongly advocated for Nursing homes and home health agencies, preventing the Governors attempt at diverting millions of dollars
away from our seniors. This year, we were also finally able to
increase the rate for home health care workers, ensuring that
these organizations are able to properly serve seniors in New
Hampshire, said Senator Jeanie Forrester (R-Meredith).

Another project I took on during this recent walk was to

prune the pine plantation. The
trees in this plantation are too
rough and the dead limbs too
large for these trees to ever
make quality sawtimber, so the
pruning had other purposes.
One is to improve visibility
through the stand and make
walking through it easier.
Another purpose is to make
room to put mushroom logs
underneath. My wife and I are
going to try our hand at growing shiitake mushrooms, and
the pine plantation will provide
plenty of shade. Well use oak
and sugar maple logs as the
growing medium for shiitakes,
but the pines will provide a
shady spot to grow them.

I look forward to continuing my work on behalf of New Over time Ill continue to harHampshires seniors again this session.
