2. Describe the effects of the war and resulting peace treaties on
population movement, the international economy, and shifts in
the geographic and political borders of Europe and the Middle
East.
Objectives Students will learn about the outcome of the war and its effects
around the world. In particular, students will analyze and
understand the nature of the war and its human costs. Students
will learn about the dissolved Ottoman Empire into what became
Turkey. Students will also learn the effects of the peace treaties
and its consequence in the people round the world.
Introduction Start the lecture with a small clip that illustrated the nature of
/ Overview the war and its human cost of Total War. Provide a small
summary of the weaponry that were used in war to explain what
caused all the causalities.

Context
Germany Schlieffen Plan to decapitate France did not worked.
Germany last offensive was contain by the Allies. Germany,
under Socialists rule, is forced to sing an armistice to stop
fighting.
Mustafa Keman gave that Ottoman Empire their only victory in
World War I. In 1918, the Ottoman Empire was forced to suet for
peace pressure by British forces. He was a World War I hero for
giving the only victory to the Ottoman Empire. He began a
resistance movement using nationalism. He believed that the
Turks deserved their own state. He was force to deal with Greece
trying to take the Asia Minor. Kemal resisted this by rallying
troops against the Greeks, as a consequence he defeated
Greeces aggression. The Treaty of Lausanne, 1923, ended the
age of the Ottoman Empire thus giving birth to the Turks State.
Kemal wanted to modernize Turkey to make it a stronger state. A

Turks Republic was established in which he became the first


president (but acted like a dictator). He passed all types of
returns to modernize the state. National Unity: Expulsion or
suppression of minorities, to give the illusion that its an all Turks
state. Secularization: Secular schools, legal codes and secular
courts were stablish in 1926 (Civil Laws rather than religion).
Linguistic Reforms: Arabic replaced by new Latin variant
alphabet. It was meant to align Turkey with the West. Social
Reforms: Western clothing, customs and adoption of sur names.
It was also meant to enhance the rights of women in education,
equal right, and inheritance (1926). Women were given the right
to vote in 1934. He is significant because he pioneer Turkey, as
new state, to align it with the West, more secular, and Modern.
He is responsible for establishing the Turks state as we know it
today. He is known as the Father of the Turks. Armenian
Genocide
World War I was the first total war. The Industrial Revolution
generated many improvements for Europeans society, in
particular weaponry advances created a high human toll
destructive to humanity.
The outcome of the war changed international borders, there
was a vision to arrange people based on their ethnicity, in
particular the Middle East. However, this generated many
political and social instability.
Explain the outcome of the war and its consequences on human
life.
Recap how Germany is defeated and the outcome of the war.
Emphasize how the war change the borders in Europe and in the
Middle East.
The fall of the Ottoman Empire and the role of Mustafa Kemal in
the creation of the modern day Turkey. The mass migration of
people across geographic locations and Armenian Genocide.

50 Minutes Class Meeting (5-10mns Clip)
Using a clicker, students will complete pop quizzes (may include
extra credit points) during the lecture. This is aim to be as a poll
to make sure that the students are understanding the content
discuss. Students will talk to a peer next to them explaining
what the lecture was about at the beginning of the next class
meeting.

Preview

Students will be asked to do a 3 minute quick write as a


reflection of what the lecture was about (it could be an outline,
simple sketch, key words, etc.)
Have the students look in their book a chronological timeline
and have them copied into a paper to turn in next class
meeting. This will allow them to become familiar with the order
of the event, useful for the next lecture class activity.
