Dear Friends in Christ,

As we progress on our journey to the cross of
Good Friday and the empty tomb of Easter
Sunday I pray God is blessing you in your
Lenten disciplines of making an offering to the
poor, prayer, and fasting. As we noted last
month, these Lenten disciplines are our
adaptation and appropriation of Jesus teaching
on the three acts of righteousness in His
Sermon on the Mount. Of course, daily prayer,
fasting, and giving a money offering to the poor
are not practices weve got to do, they are
practices we get to do. Giving to those in
need, praying daily, and giving-up something for
Lent are resources God offers us to nourish and
strengthen our faith in Christ. And faithfaith in
Christis what is of the utmost importance!
I love the way Martin Luther talks about faith.
For example, in his sermon on John 3:16 (For
God so loved the world), he says:
Faith is not a paltry and
petty matter but it is a heartfelt
confidence in God through Christ
that Christs suffering and death
pertain to you and should belong
to you. The pope and the devil
have a faith too, but it is only a
historical faith. True faith does
not doubt; it yields its whole heart
to the conviction that the Son of
God was given into death for us,
that sin is remitted, that death is
destroyed, and that these evils
have been done away withbut,
more than this, that eternal life,
salvation, and glory, yes, God
Himself have been restored to
us, and that through the Son
God has made us His children.
There is no better news in the entire
world for us than this: through faith in the
crucified and risen Jesus Christ, God is
forgiving us sinners and is rescuing us from
judgment, evil and death. This is the Good
News we embrace! This is the Good News we
proclaim! This is the Good News that gives
Saint Peters Lutheran Church its reason for
being! May the truth and power of this Good

News become more and more real for each of

us this Lenten Season!

Relay for Life

May 13, 2016
Lexington High School
In 2016 there will be 1,685,210 new cancer cases
and 595,690 cancer deaths in the United States.
How many will be our friends and family
members? We can make a difference by donating
to the American Cancer Society!
The majority of money given to St. Peters Relay
for Life efforts stay in our community to support:
Hope Lodge free housing in Charleston, SC for
patients who have to travel away from home for
treatment; Road to Recovery rides provided to
and from treatments; Look Good...Feel Better
free service teaches women battling cancer to
improve their appearance and self images; Reach
for Recovery matches breast cancer survivors
with people newly diagnosed; Research and
Clinical Trials the hope for many battling this
disease.
American Cancer Society Is the largest nongovernmental funder of cancer research in the US.
We will gather in May 13th to celebrate our
survivors, remember our family and friends we
have loved who have lost their cancer battle and
fight back the only way we know howby
donating our dollars. Mo donation is too small.

Sympathies and Celebrations

Sympathies
We extend sincere Christian sympathy to
Keith McMillan and family upon the death
of his father, Richard McMillan, on
February 3. The funeral was held at
Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church
in Ehrhardt, SC on February 6.
We also extend sincere Christian
sympathy to Judy Nichols upon the death
of her mother, Carolyn Norris, on
February 14. The funeral was held at
Aveleigh Presbyterian Church in
Newberry, SC on February 17.
Celebrations
We joyfully welcome Miles Jacob Hendrix,
son of Matt and Allison Hendrix who was
born on January 26. Miles weighed in at
7lbs. 13.5 oz and 20 inches long.
Congratulations to Matt and Allison.
We also welcome with joy, Elliot Thomas
Porth, son of Brett and Jennie Porth who
was born on February 3. Elliot weighed 8
lbs. 6.3 oz and is 19.5 inches long.
Congratulation to Brett and Jennie; big
brother, Trey, and big sister, Grayson.
Congratulations also to Larry and Sharon
James on the birth of a granddaughter. We
give thanks to God for the gift of these
new lives!
Congratulations to Christen Weidner on
being named one of five finalists for
Lexington Ones 2015-2016 District
Teacher of the Year. Way to go, Christen!!!

The Dominican Republic Mission

team will be hosting a fundraiser
for the trip. We have raised most of the
money for the trip but would like to take
additional supplies and clothing for the
children. We will be selling plates with Phil
Hughes special barbecue recipe and slaw,
rolls, beans and a cookie or brownie. This will
be Dine-in or take out on Saturday April 16
from 10:30 AM until 2 PM. The price for the
plate will be $8 and if there is any barbecue
leftover $10 a pound. Tell all of your friends
and look for the roadside signs.
We

and pushing this over the top of our goal.

Easter Lilies -

All orders for lilies must

be in the church office no later than March 6,
2016. No lily orders will be accepted after
that date. Lilies are $13.50 each. If you do
not wish to order lilies, you may direct your
offering to Relay for Life. Both the lilies and
the Relay for Life gifts will be listed in the
Easter bulletins. You will find envelopes on
the tables in the narthex of the Sanctuary, at
the entrance of the Parish Life Center and the
church office in which to place your orders.
Please note: If you do not wish to take your
lilies home after the service, please indicate
on the Easter Lilies envelope. The lily/lilies
will be delivered to some one for their
enjoyment.

Stewardship Thoughts
The Law of Constructive Contribution
This writing comes from the 11th Chapter of the book The 33 Laws of Stewardship
written by Dave Sutherland and Kirk Nowery.
The work of God is to be done by the people of God giving according to the will of
God. This law focuses on the work of Nehemiah and the Israelites that rebuilt the
city of Jerusalem.
The Law of Constructive Contribution was ruling in their hearts, and they kept going in
spite of all that stood in the way. In just 52 days, the wall was rebuilt and the people
celebrated Gods blessing and empowerment. If we look closely at the experience, the
lessons are clearly applicable to us as stewards today:
Intensify your persistence in prayer. The waves of persecution never let up while the
rebuilding went on, but Gods people had a stronger weapon: Nehemiah 4:6 We prayed
to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat. Exercising common
sense, they set up a defense. They did what was necessary to complement their prayers.
If you want to counteract your home being burglarized, dont just pray, put in an alarm
system.
Expect difficulty when you do whats right. Great opportunity is often accompanied by
great opposition. The Apostle Paul said of the work in Ephesus, 1st Corinthians 16:9 A
great door for effective ministry has opened to me, and there are many who oppose me.
He chose to think primarily about the great open door, not the daunting opponents. The
easiest thing to do when confronted by difficulty is to give up, and nothing pleases Satan
or the critics more than for the negative to cancel or neutralize the positive. Its crucial to
keep going, no matter what is in the way, no matter what threatens to prevent you from
doing Gods will.
Dont give up or give in. Nehemiah and the workers were invincible because they were
in the very center of Gods will. They would not give up or give in. Faced with deceit,
distraction and discouragement on all sides, they relied on Gods power and He gave them
the victory. Gods promise to us is no different from the one those believers carried in
their hearts. Johns first epistle 4:4 reminds us: You, dear children, are from God and
have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the
world.

Berly's passing. Your kind words, cards, calls and
visits are so appreciated and we are truly blessed

special each of you are to us!

Thank you for the cards, calls, especially those of

you that remembered to pray during my double
brain and spinal surgery.
I have been left with cognitive and balance issues
that have ended my life long love of St. Peters
church choir since I was a little girl in this church.
Please continue to pray for me to find my place
again since I have lots of difficulties (driving,
numbers, etc.). I am sure prayer will lead me and
I will feel a sign as to what I can do in the church
again.
