Assignment I
PART A
What is meant by thermodynamic system? Differentiate between closed and open
system.
What is meant by thermodynamic property? Differentiate Intensive and Extensive
properties.
State zeroth law, First law and second law of thermodynamics.
Compare petrol and diesel engine.
What is the function of regenerator and intercooler in gas turbine?
What is the difference between steady flow and non flow process?
Define the term enthalpy, entropy and internal energy?
What is meant by reversible and irreversible process?
PART B
3
(a) A cylinder contains 0.45 m of a gas at 1 10 5 N/m2 and 80C. The gas is
compressed to a volume of 0.13 m3, the final pressure being 5 105 N/m2.
Determine:
(i)
The mass of gas ;
(ii)
The value of index n for compression ;
(iii)
The increase in internal energy of the gas ;
(iv)
The heat received or rejected by the gas during compression. Take = 1.4, R
= 294.2 J/kgC.
(b) At the inlet to a certain nozzle the enthalpy of fluid passing is 2800 kJ/kg, and the
velocity is 50 m/s. At the discharge end the enthalpy is 2600 kJ/kg. The nozzle is
horizontal and there is negligible heat loss from it.(i) Find the velocity at exit of the
nozzle.(ii) If the inlet area is 900 cm 2 and the specific volume at inlet is 0.187 m 3/kg,
find the mass flow rate.(iii) If the specific volume at the nozzle exit is 0.498 m 3/kg,
find the exit area of nozzle.
a) With neat sketch explain the working of 2-stroke petrol engine.
b) Compare 4 stroke and 2 stroke engines. c) Compare SI and CI Engines.
(a) Calculate the change in internal energy, heat transfer, change in enthalpy for 0.5 kg
of air expanding according to the law PV 1.2 = constant from 1 MPa and 300C to 100
KPa. What will be the work done by the air during expansion process. Find final
temperature.
(b) A mass of 1.5 kg air is compressed in a Quasi-static process from 0.1 MPa to 0.7
MPa for which PV = constant. The initial density of air is 1.16 kg/m 3. Find the work
done by the piston to compress the air.
(a) Derive the steady flow energy equation for flow process.
(b) Air is flowing steadly at the rate of 0.5 kg/s through an air compressor entering at
7 m/s velocity, 100 kPa pressure and 0.95 m 3/kg volume and leaving at 5 m/s, 700
kPa, 0.19 m3/kg volume. The internal energy of air leaving is 90 kJ/kg greater than
that of air entering. Cooling water in a compressor absorbs heat from the air at the rate
of 58 kW. Determine the work input to the air in kW. Find the ratio of inlet pipe
diameter to the outlet pipe diameter.
