8. Suppose components 1 , 2 , 1 and 2 operate independently, in a system below. The


probability of functioning of each of the components is 0.8. The entire system works if 1 or 2
works and 1 or 2 works. Find the probability that the entire system works.

9. Approximately 0.4% of the people in the United States are living with HIV infection.
Modern HIV testing is highly accurate. The HIV screening detects 99.7% of the people who
have HIV and shows a negative result for 98.5% of the people who do not have HIV. Suppose a
person had a positive test result. What is the probability that the individual has HIV infection?
