Food advertising and the canteen
Children are exposed to hundreds of television food advertisements every week. The majority of these
advertisements are for foods that are high in fat, sugar or salt or low in fibre. Encouraging children to
become ‘critical thinkers’ about television food advertising is one way to address the issue of food
advertising in the school setting.
Moving towards a healthier canteen requires a strong commitment to the promotion of healthy eating.
With dedication and support from the whole school community, a healthy canteen can provide a range of
healthy food choices that are consistent with the messages being taught in the classroom about healthy
eating and television food advertising.
