Year 6 Spelling Tests

It is possible that your child will not know the meanings
of quite a few of these words, so make sure you either
explain the meanings or encourage them to look them up in
the dictionary. Learning spellings is a great way to extend
vocabulary, so as part of their spelling practice, you could
ask your child to write each word into their own sentence to
show that they know the meaning of the word. A good game
is to get them to choose two words from their list at random
and say or write a silly sentence containing the two words.
It is particularly important that your child learns the
difference in meaning between the pairs of homophones
in Test 9 (words ending ce / cy are nouns; words
ending se / sy are verbs).
Try various different strategies for learning spellings: with
some lists you could write each syllable of the word on a
separate piece of card, then jumble up the cards for your
child to re-assemble. You could also practise grouping
words according to a certain criteria; for example, with the
words from Test 10, your child could sort the words into
comm words and com words. Can they see what all the
com words have in common? (The m is followed by a p).
When you come to testing them, read out the words
aloud in a different order to the one given in the list. Make
sure you look at any mistakes your child has made
and ensure that they focus on learning
these words over the next few days.
Towards the end of the school year, test your child on the
End of Year Test. Make sure you address any issues before
your child moves onto secondary school (for example: if
they struggle with a particular prefix or ending, make sure
you find other similar words for them to practise with).
