Title: Film analysis of The Godfather (Hospital scene)


Grade Level: 9-12
Student Centered Lesson
Objectives:
1. Students will be able to follow along while formulating longer phrases to describe the music

2. Students will be able to describe the scene and musical aspects


3. Students will be able to use the Functions of Film Scoring while filling in the musical function
box.
4. Students will be able to reflect and discuss the function that the music provided in the scene.

Materials:

1. Lap top for video link


2. Function of Film Scoring sheet
3. Film Analysis Sheet

Procedure:

1. Teacher will introduce movie and plot


2. Teacher will briefly speak about the composer
-Volunteer students to read key points and setting
3. Teacher will play leitmotifs multiple times

4. Students will take out their Functions of Music Sheet


5. Teacher will play the scene once without stopping or making any comments
6. Teacher will go back and play each cue, and pause at the end of each one.
-Teacher will go back and play the cue a second time
-Ask students if they need to hear cue again
-Skip over any sections without music to save time
7. Students will reflect and give feedback about what they heard and the function the music
provided (Speaking portion, ELA common core.)

Analyze the purpose of information presented in diverse media and formats (e.g., visually
quantitatively, orally) and evaluate the motives (e.g., social, commercial, political) behind
its presentation.
Assessment:
1. Teacher will visually observe students while the scene is being played. (Was it the first time
through the scene or not until the last time that the students started writing?) Group
2. Teacher will ask for student volunteers to discuss the plot of the scene Individual
3. Teacher will ask for student volunteers to discuss the music in the scene Individual
4. Teacher will ask for student feedback of how they applied Functions in Film Scoring throughout their analysis.
