Contractors shouldnt be afraid of looking at different and

newer ways of doing business. It could mean even more
business when the industry rebounds.
By Cory Dellenbach

W
Cory Dellenbach

ere three months into 2016, and

for many contractors serving
the oil and gas industry, its
continued to be tough with the downturn
in oil prices continuing. Exploration and
production firms continue to curtail their
spending in the shale plays, which in turn
means less for the companies servicing
those operations.
Predictions vary on when the industry
will bounce back anywhere from mid2016 to 2020, based on what Ive been
hearing. However, there are ways for
contractors and companies to make it
through this trying time and be ready when
the industry bounces back.
Bullzeye Oilfield Services of Bowie,
Texas, profiled this month, does one thing
that all companies should do excel at
customer service. Bullzeye co-founder Zack
Maxey makes sure he and his crews are
available by phone all day, every day, and
they listen to what customers need when
they call.
One of the best ways to maintain your

Beyond

and blades.

clients, even if they arent calling you with as

much work, is great customer service. Call
your customers every once in a while. Find
out how they are doing; let them know you
are still out there and ready for them when
they need you again.

There are ways for contractors

and companies to make it
through this trying time
and be ready when the
industry bounces back.
That shows you are ready at a moments
notice; it also shows that you dont want to
lose them as a customer and are willing to
work to keep them.
RELYING ON TECHNOLOGY
If youre looking to reduce cost, this
issue has some tips on technologies you
could consider. While they
cost money up front, fleettracking or GPS-type software
might help you save money in
the long run.
Many of you have trucks
that need to make deliveries,
such as water, hot oil or other
oilfield supplies. There are

TRYING SOMETHING NEW

Use this downtime to try something
new. Do you have a vacuum excavation truck
or pipeline inspection camera that youve
only used for oilfield services? Consider
what other industries you could dip into
that could help support your business until
the oil industry picks up again.
Our Bakken Extra feature this month
focuses on Freedom Railcar Solutions,
based in the Bakken Shale and owned by a
transload facility operator. They heard from
several customers who have to send their
railcars for repair and lose thousands with
those cars out of service.
Already being in the railroad service
area, the transload facility operator launched
Freedom Railcar Solutions and its mobile
services.
This company sends its repair crews
out to the railcars and does as much of
the work on site as possible. Only if it is
absolutely necessary will the car be moved.
The mobile service saves customers valuable
time on the rail, and money, by keeping the
cars in service.
DONT BE AFRAID
Finally, dont be afraid to try new
things. Test out different ways of performing
the jobs. Maybe you can find better and
more productive ways of doing them.
Theres no doubt that its going to be a
rough road ahead, but if you put forth your
best efforts, you wont have any problem
seeing the flip side of this downturn and
it could be even more profitable for you than
the previous boom.

Bullzeye Oilfield Services leans on quality communication

to thrive in the midst of difficult market conditions

A focus on customer service skills is the main reason Bullzeye Oilfield Services
has managed to find success during the latest oil boom downturn that has
spurred other family-run operations to go belly up along the way.

ABOVE: The field operations

staff at Bullzeye Oilfield Services
at their shop in Elmendorf, Texas. From left, Nicholas Henney,
field engineer; Josh McCoy, lead
operator; and Zack Maxey, cofounder and president.

When our customers call in for jobs, we make sure

we ask all the right questions every time, says Zack Maxey,
co-founder with his father, Keith, of the company based
in Bowie, Texas. We show up early on all the jobs and
are always ready to go. Were a 24/7 service company, so
weve got to be by our phones all the time and accessible.
Being accessible is important for the wireline services
company that specializes in the logging and perforating of
oil and natural gas wells and works throughout the state.
Everybody knows that they can get ahold of me at any
time, Maxey says. Whether its 1 oclock in the morning
or during the football game on Saturday afternoon, they
know they can count on me being accessible.
This type of access, from his standpoint, is important
to foster among the entire Bullzeye team as well. Being
able to touch base with your engineers on location and
troubleshoot right there is huge, he says. And now we
can even FaceTime one another.
And then theres the sense of camaraderie and
teamwork fostered among all employees that helps
eliminate the type of bickering, arguing or other
communication barriers that can wreak havoc in
workplace settings that lack these elements. You get guys
that are really working together and communicating well,
he says.

FAMILIAL FOUNDATION
In addition to the communication skills that have
been a difference-maker both internally and when dealing
with clients, Maxey credits the companys success in part
to its ability to simplify processes as much as possible
eliminating any wasted movements and related safety
issues on location.
This type of know-how comes from a solid foundation
of industry experience. Both Maxey and Keith have
worked in wireline services in the oilfields of Texas, and
Keith, who has been in the industry for 40 years, founded
a company called Max-Line in 1998. Thats where Maxey
initially received his training, starting at the age of 13.
He began by cleaning trucks part time and was
eventually able to run trucks and logs. Basically every
summer, winter, spring break and weekend I was working
in the industry, Maxey says. Anytime I wasnt in school
I was working.
They sold out to Basic Energy Services and worked
for that company for close to five years before filing for
their explosives license in 2010. As Maxey finished up his
college degree at Texas State University, the pair started
Bullzeye as 50/50 partners.
But Maxeys schooling wasnt forgotten by any
means. While earning his bachelors degree in business

administration with a concentration in entrepreneurial studies, he also

founded an entrepreneurism fraternity the first of its kind in the State
of Texas.
His classes became opportunities to tailor projects and assignments to
the business he was envisioning all the while. My case study was always
Bullzeye Oilfield Services, he says. So as I was going through college, I was
building the business plan for the company.

Theres always a sense of respect for one another within

our company. Everybody senses that, and I feel like thats
one reason that everybody respects one another so
much within our company.
Zack Maxey
The people around me were actually helping me build the business
plan, the feasibility studies and some of the strategy for the company, he
adds, and his business plan for Bullzeye took second place in a schoolwide
competition.
Some of the most valuable lessons learned during his college years,
however, revolved around building relationships learning how to work
with teams and get others to take part in a collective vision.

By the time he and his father turned Bullzeye from dream into reality, the
two were already well-versed in the industry and prepared to hit the ground
running. The family element is stronger than just the two. Maxeys sister,
Misti, keeps books for the company and oversees legal updates, insurance
requirements and employee relations.
Working with family members brings many challenges and many
rewards. Whenever youre dealing with business stuff you have to check
your family card at the door, he says. And when it comes time to be a family
together you have to check your business card at the door.
The family sense and the respect that you have for a family member is
the one thing that transcends those lines all the time, Maxey adds. Theres
always a sense of respect for one another within our company. Everybody
senses that, and I feel like thats one reason that everybody respects one
another so much within our company.

In-house
vehicle overhauls
As Bullzeye Oilfield Services tackles its work
day in and day out, the companys fleet of 28and 38-ton cranes (manufactured by Altec and
Manitex) is put to good use, but its fleet of six
wireline trucks is a crucial component as well.
Rather than using one specific provider,
the company purchases trucks manufactured
by various companies at good prices and then
handles all the work needed to get them set up
and ready for action. We refurbish all of our trucks
ourselves, and that way we put the equipment we
want in them, Maxey says.
Each truck is equipped with a Geo-Log
depth measurement system and Warrior software
(Scientific Data Systems), and theyre all wired
up the same. We have the same digital systems
and then we use the same backup systems, Zack
Maxey, co-owner, says, and our backup systems
are usually mechanical.
Since we build all these trucks identically
ourselves, when theres an issue we already have
a good sense of where to look, he adds, and it
just increases our ability to troubleshoot and get
everything fixed fast.

As long as oil prices stay low, the amount of work is

decreasing. So in order to keep up with the amount of

Zack Maxey
SERVICES OFFERED
Wireline services are a necessity in the completion of a well, Maxey
explains, and Bullzeye provides cased-hole wireline, pressure control and

paraffin treatment services to its customer base,

including private, independent and publicly held
operating companies. A few of its clients are among
the top-five largest oil companies in the United States.
Its service area is mainly focused on the State
of Texas. We can and do work outside of the states
borders, but its not something we do regularly, he
says. Its basically upon request mostly from our
Texas clients. Well go out of our way to try to bend
over backward to help them out. When they want us
on the job, were going to go where they want us.
Bullzeyes role is to lower tools into oil wells
using a piece of cable, which has a conductor and allows communication
between those tools in the well and those at the surface. Well lower the
tools down to the bottom of the hole, and well use logging tools to give us
a better picture of what is in the hole and whats going on beneath our feet,
he says.
After logging the wells and determining whats down there, then it is
possible to go in and complete the well. At that point his team sends in guns
to shoot perforations in the casing and allow the fluid to be extracted.
Imagine a straw with a plug in the bottom, he says. Forcing water into
that straw builds the pressure up, but the fluid will not go anywhere. But if
you punch little holes at the bottom and then you force fluid through it, its

a different story. Thats what gives the gas and the oil thats trapped in these
formations access to the wellbore.
Recently, Bullzeye has been in the Eagle Ford Shale setting a lot of
production packers in the hole. Thats a mechanical service, he says, essentially
delivering a tool to the bottom of the hole and then setting it in the casing in
order to set the plug and kill the well until production tubing is put in.
OPPORTUNITIES AHEAD
Currently, low oil prices present the biggest challenge for Bullzeye.
As long as oil prices stay low, Maxey explains, the amount of work is
decreasing. So in order to keep up with the amount of capacity I have, Im
having to acquire new customers.
Looking ahead, however, he suspects the next challenge will be effectively

also runs five Grove all-terrain cranes (a brand owned by Manitowoc Cranes),
with lifting capacities ranging from 115 to 165 tons, says Kevin Franke, largecrane district manager for FESCOs crane division, based in Victoria, Texas.
In simplest terms, FESCOs crane division does the heavy lifting, so
to speak, for other service contractors. Whether its slicklines or coil-tubing
units, the companys cranes spend a lot of time on drilling pads holding up
equipment while contractors work.

DEPENDABLE EQUIPMENT
While the cranes hold large, heavy items in place every day, one thing
they rarely hold up is drilling pad operations. Theyre very dependable
machines, Franke says. They dont break down, which is critical because
breakdowns cost money. They go out on jobs and they finish jobs, with no
mechanical or computer issues. They go out and do the job, we clean them up
and they go out again to do more jobs.

Franke has worked with Tadano cranes before, when he worked for
other companies, so hes familiar with their track record for dependability.
But he also praises the Tadanos load charts; for anyone unfamiliar with that
terminology, load charts show a cranes abilities regarding weight-capacity
limitations at certain boom heights and angles.
Ive done the research and Tadanos have better load charts, he says.
Our 200-ton cranes (the ATF 180G-5s) are the most popular because they
can do more kinds of jobs.
The ATF 180G-5s prove their mettle on every job. In one instance, it lifted
a 72,000-pound coil-tubing unit with 25,000 feet of 2 7/8-inch-diameter pipe
wrapped around the spool. The wire unspools as it goes downhole, Franke
explains. We set it on top of the tree and held it so it wouldnt fall over while
we were going downhole.
Franke also cites the Tadanos

really, really nice.
Kevin Franke
This less-is-more approach
makes it easier to train operators,
though Franke notes it still takes about six months of instruction in the
companys equipment yard to familiarize employees with operations. Then
operators get tested to obtain national certification, followed by six to eight
months of additional training, this time out in the field under the watchful
eye of a veteran operator. It takes a good year to 18 months before we cut
them loose on their own, Franke notes.
ENHANCING THE SAFETY
The computerized controls also enhance safety because they shut down
the crane if an operator accidentally exceeds its limitations. To scope out, for
instance, you pull up the screen, select how far you want it to go out and hit
enter, then it scopes out and locks in the pins its all automatic, Franke
says. But it shuts you off when you get to the edge of your load chart. It will
let you do things that make the crane stronger, but not anything that makes
it weaker.
Tadanos offer other safety benefits, too. For instance, there are two
control panels that extend the cranes hydraulic, telescoping outriggers for
stability, one on each side of the truck; each control panel operates only
the outriggers on the side where the panel is mounted. That eliminates the
chances of an operator on one side of the crane extending outriggers on
the other side, where other workers may be standing unbeknownst to the
operator, Franke explains. There are cases where workers have been crushed
that way, he says.
The Tadanos also offer a backup camera that, when the crane is put into
reverse, enables the driver to see behind the rig. Its really helpful because
you can see your rigger standing behind you, Franke notes. We always have
a rigger with a flag standing behind a crane when it backs up, but the camera
still helps the driver. Drilling pads are very congested, so it helps if the driver
can see better behind the crane.
Theres also a camera on back that allows the driver to see the cable
coming off the winches, he adds. I like being able to keep an eye on that

because sometimes cables get messed up on the spool and this allows you
to see that from the cab. Before we just had mirrors, which werent as good.
Another advantage: All the wheels turn at once, which allows drivers
to do crabbing, or make tight turns a very useful feature on congested
drilling pads, Franke points out. And with eight-wheel drive, the units live
up to their all-terrain name. With eight-wheel drive, you rarely get stuck,
Franke says.
NO WORKING WITHOUT THEM
With price tags ranging from around $900,000 for the smaller units to
about $1.6 million for the ATF 180G-5s, the cranes represent a significant
investment. But Franke notes that theyre often out on jobs for weeks at a
time. They pay for themselves pretty quickly if you keep em busy, he says.
And if you keep them well maintained, theres no reason they cant last for
20 years.
The bottom line is we couldnt do what we do without them, Franke
continues. We have to have cranes to hold up the equipment, and they have
to be stout and be able to get to remote locations. Then they need to be
user-friendly when we get to job sites, easy to set up and break down, and
maneuverable in tight quarters. The Tadanos do all of that they make our
jobs much easier. GOMC

another industry veteran, Don Walsh, to

launch Freedom Railcar.
The companys first six to eight
months were spent getting necessary industry approvals to do the repairs, but
since then theyve been busy fixing railcars and getting them back into service as
quickly as possible.
MOBILE SERVICES
The mobile repair units are located in
Palermo, North Dakota, and Fort Laramie,
Wyoming, and staffed by certified technicians. The on-site services offered include
the repair of vacuum-relief valves, manway
lids and eyebolts, load valves, bottom outlet valve handles, brake parts, stencils, AEI
tags and safety appliances.
Goins estimates that 75 to 80 percent of what ails a car can be fixed with
the mobile service. A lot of times, if the
car is empty we can repair it while its still
linked up to other cars we dont need to
move it to a sideline or anything, he says.
That cuts down the amount of time the
repair takes.
While the mobile repair units serve
a 250-mile radius around their hubs in
North Dakota and Wyoming, Freedom
Railcar has plans to add units in Windsor,
Colorado, and Edmonton, Alberta, by the
end of the year. If service is needed outside
of its usual coverage area, Freedom Railcar
is also willing to send its mobile unit to a
railcars location for an added fee.
The mobile repair unit is like a
mini-repair shop, Goins says. We have
all the necessary tools, including welding
supplies and a small hoisting crane.
Companies no longer need to send their
cars away for repairs.

Thats something customers appreciate. Timothy Holan of Mercuria Energy

Trading says his company is pleased with
how Freedom Railcar has handled repairs
for its railcars. The quality and timeliness
of their repairs ensures we can maximize
our fleet utilization and have it done at a
competitive price, he says.
WORKING CLOSELY
WITH CUSTOMERS
When railcar repairs are a bit more
complicated, such as bringing older cars
up to new safety rules, Goins says the railcar is unhooked and moved to an empty
rail spur where it can be worked on.
Some cars need to be retrofitted,
and we work closely with our customers
on when we can take them off and make
the repairs, Goins says. Theres a difference in being proactive and reactive.
Proactive means youre taking the steps
before youre told to do it or before theres
a problem, while reactive means youre doing something after the fact. We always try
to be proactive and work with our clients
on making sure they are being proactive in
their repairs.
Since the railcars carry oil, theres a lot
of attention paid to safety and making sure
the cars are well-equipped to do their job.
Safety is always paramount. We work
hand in hand with our clients on safety,
Goins says. We always take extra steps
and precautions and wont do anything
that will harm the environment or the
workers.
While most companies doing business with the oil industry have experienced a slowdown as the average price of
crude oil falls, Freedom Railcar is not one
of them.
Weve actually been pretty busy because companies are seeing they can take
some railcars out of service and get them
repaired or retrofitted more easily right
now, Goins says. GOMC

RESEARCHING FOR
PRODUCTION
Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute, University of Wyoming partnership
develops different methods of producing oil in the state
By Greg Bates

hen Steven Carpenter stepped

into his role as the director of the
Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute
(EORI) in July, he knew what was expected
of him. He brought in a wealth of knowledge
and expertise in the enhanced oil recovery
field, and now hes trying to take EORI to
the next level.
My first goal is to go get that bench
strength back and rebuild the organization
back to full strength, Carpenter says. The
second goal is to take the research opportunities we have and
be more projectThe mission of the

ground seeing if
Steven Carpenter
it works or doesnt
work, and getting
that feedback? Those are my two primary
missions, and were making strides every
day to accomplish those.
THE MISSION
EORI, which has been in existence
for about 30 years, is a legislative-funded
and legislative-mandated research institute
through the State of Wyoming. The EORI
Commission oversees the institutes
financial and strategic planning.
The mission of the institute is to
help increase production of oil and gas in
the State of Wyoming, Carpenter says.
Specifically, to help increase in severance
tax production and be able to provide for all
the Wyomingites.
EORI is housed on the campus of the
University of Wyoming in Laramie and is

part of the School of Energy Resources. With

its presence at the university, the institute
saves time and money not having to recreate
all the basic sciences physics, chemistry,
petroleum engineering and geology since
the colleges departments are right down the
hallway, notes Carpenter.
In our efforts to try to bring information together, thats going to save time,
says Nick Jones, technical lead at EORI.
When folks have to go to nine different resources to find what theyre looking for, we
can consolidate that and curate that information, and thats going to help speed up
entry in developing Wyomings resources.
A couple years ago, EORI expanded
to a second location in Casper. This allows
the institute to do its preliminary research
in Laramie and then apply it in the heart
of where all the oil and gas exploration is
happening.
WORKING WITH PRODUCERS
Carpenter says the EORI gets to
interact with researchers from the college
and find out what they are doing. The
institute will then take that information to
the exploration and production companies
in the state and find an application for it.
Theyll take a look at it and tell us what
doesnt work, and then well tweak and
modify that, Carpenter says.
The institute works closely with small
and midrange energy producers. Major oil
operators generally have the capability to
use in-house engineers for their research.
Smaller producers dont often have that
luxury, so EORI is providing them with
some answers to their questions.
One example Carpenter cites is when
service providers have new technologies

they want to roll out, they will contact EORI

to help facilitate research. Once the work is
completed, the results are available for the
producers as well as the general public. Its
beneficial to everyone.
If were doing our job, were
understanding what the university and the
new technologies and the service providers
have available, and were out trying to knock
on doors to say, Hey, this is some cuttingedge stuff you might not be aware of, here
it is, Carpenter says. At the same time,
were out visiting with those folks asking
what their problems are.
EORI isnt just focused on the Niobrara
Shale; it is involved with formations that
span the entire state.
Just four years ago, the Minnelusa
Formation was the leading oil-producing
formation in the Powder River Basin, Jones
says. It was conventionally developed with
vertical wells. Since that time, we have seen
the tight cretaceous sands such as the Turner
and the Parkman take first and second place
over the Minnelusa. So were seeing more
volumes of hydrocarbons coming out of
these more horizontal development plays.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
EORI is currently working on some
major projects including releasing a Web
application to help the public learn about
oil and gas development in Wyoming.
The focus is on enhanced and improved
oil recovery, Jones says. The application is
expected to be available early this year.
Another project is characterizing
sandstones, which are classic cretaceous
deposits, in the Powder River Basin. It has
a good history of conventional vertical well
completions, but its also a leading target for
horizontal development in the tighter rock,
Jones says. By characterizing that, were
hoping to be able to provide information
that will help benefit producers as they
move in to look at these resources.
EORI researchers are also digging
into process flow, pore flow and the best
methods to get liquid through the rock.
There are some really great things going
on at the university, Carpenter says. Were
trying to carry those things forward. GOMC

A TOOL FOR EVEN

THE OILFIELDS
SCADA systems have grown to help operators monitor oil and gas operations,
several different options available to those in the field
By Edward Nugent

SCADA (SUPERVISORY CONTROL AND DATA ACQUISITION)

HAS BEEN A KEY TECHNOLOGY IN THE MONITORING OF
OIL AND GAS OPERATIONS IN ONSHORE, OFFSHORE AND
PIPELINE OPERATIONS.
New approaches combining AM/FM-GIS (automated mapping/facilities
management) with SCADA are bringing about innovations for field operators
and mobile maintenance workers. The oil and gas industry is also adopting
new computer-based technologies from the Internet of Things (IoT) and GIS
(geographical information systems).
System interoperability with open communications in automation is
critical to enabling new technologies to be integrated into existing SCADA
systems. The key is integrating GPS (Global Positioning System) and indoor
location services via micro-geolocation in smart and productive ways with
SCADA. Companies are finding great value in knowing the precise location of
assets and personnel, information from which they can make better decisions.
The open and closed development of SCADA architecture
In the past, SCADA suppliers provided proprietary solutions. During
the 1990s driven by commercially available operating systems such as
Microsoft Windows HMI (human-machine interface), communications and
telemetry moved toward open architectures. The OPC Foundation and other
industry associations were formed to guide interoperability standards.
Now, many SCADA
vendors are moving back

optimized their software to
the control equipment of their

vendor agnostic, focusing on an open architecture designed for heterogeneous
control equipment such as PLCs (programmable logic controllers).
Today, independent vendors provide a wide array of nonproprietary
modules, including HMI, real-time database structures, historian software,
mobility, trending and alarm management, communication protocols, data

analysis and reporting software, and multi-station networking and redundancy.

The globally independent SCADA vendors are leading the adoption of the new
location-based technologies and are revolutionizing the way SCADA is used.
Micro-geolocation and SCADA on the move
Since the 90s, GPS has been used for outdoor navigation using real-time
navigation and mapping systems. And the oil and gas industry has incorporated
LBS (location-based services) for mobility for over 20 years. The value of LBS is
seen in determining the exact location of a person, vehicle or piece of equipment.
Its also key for safety in the case of an emergency to determine the immediate
location of personnel. In addition, LBS makes it much easier to locate and
conduct the maintenance of a remote pump or RTU (remote terminal unit) or
other outside equipment. It has also shown its usefulness to direct personnel to
a remote area of a pipeline and/or the safest route to the location when weather,
traffic, etc., are a concern.
Indoor location systems, based on PBS (proximity-based services), come
into play when satellites are unavailable. They offer more accurate location
services than GPS, often called micro-geolocation. This technology allows
targeted determination of location while indoors in a refining plant, pipeline or
aboard an offshore oil rig.
Micro-geolocation is already used in airports, convention centers and
retail, and it offers oil and gas operations some interesting advantages. It is

particularly useful when operators, maintenance personnel or technicians are

inside a compressor station or a pumping station where GPS signals are not
available. It can address safety issues and help track which equipment has
been maintained and how often. Lastly, micro-geolocation can help to navigate
different floors and levels of a facility to assist in locating the right sensor or a
faulty valve on a piece of equipment.
For example, on an offshore rig, GPS may tell you which unit you are
located on, but micro-geolocation will tell the operator or maintenance worker
what level they are on and what equipment they are near. This opens the
capability to push the information to the mobile worker in the context of their
current location. It is a much more proactive approach particularly suited to the
small displays available on mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones.
Micro-geolocation can take a location and automatically provide the
operator with diagnostic and/or procedural data. It also gives a view of real-time
equipment status, maintenance information and manuals. In addition, microgeolocation can provide the specific location and count of personnel in a given
area and provide tracking/guidance for planned as well as unplanned events.
As smartphones and tablets become ubiquitous, users are accustomed to
retrieving information as they move about. Equipped with GPS and wireless
capabilities, and Internet-enabled, they allow LBS to drive content to these
mobile devices.
Today, GPS will only work properly in a relatively unobstructed
environment from the receiver to the satellites otherwise there can be,
at best, an intermittent signal. This is driving the market for indoor location
technology. The next evolution of location-based apps will leverage indoor
position-based service, which will enable location-based content while in areas
where GPS is not available, such as indoors, in an outdoor location between tall
structures or in industrial complexes.
Indoor location systems are forecasted to be the next-generation
technology that will transform the location services industry market and
enhance the mobile ecosystem. The world of the IoT, when fully realized, brings
a next generation of connectedness seamlessly whether indoors or out. It will
create the development of new and innovative services that will bridge the
indoor/outdoor gap, deliver improved security and increased productivity, and
further increase our dependence on our mobile devices, which will become the
standard tools of our trade.
Proximity-based location benefits for efficiency
Indoor location technology was initially deployed as a way to target
advertisements to consumers within retail outlets. By applying this technology
to SCADA, access to relevant data within pumping stations and processing
facilities will also benefit oil and gas operations. This leads to innovation in
creating new location-contextual mobile SCADA and HMI applications as well
as revolutionizing field service, analytics, logistics, optimization and a range of
other related applications.
As these location-based services are deployed over the next few years,
major improvements to operations and maintenance are expected. Minimally,
we will see reduced downtime and improved reliability as maintenance workers
are proactively provided live data and work processes based on their physical
proximity to equipment. Operational efficiency will increase as the time
taken to perform human-based tasks is reduced. Finally, and perhaps most
importantly, safety improvements will be seen, as miscommunication risks are
mitigated by proactively providing safety-critical information to the worker on
their ever-present mobile device. GOMC

5 MISTAKES THAT MAKE

YOU A BAD MANAGER
Avoid common pitfalls and create a positive environment where
employees give a tireless effort to make the company succeed
By David Waits

ince 2000, less than one-third of

U.S. employees have been engaged
in their work. This is according to
numerous national surveys that measured
employees involvement, enthusiasm and
commitment. Think about your most recent visit to a retail store or restaurant and
your experience as a consumer will likely
validate the reality of this startling statistic.
For many employees, the business
leadership has a lot to do with their engagement. A Gallup study of 7,272 adults
revealed that one in two had left a job at
some point in their career to get away from
a manager and thus improve their overall
quality of life.

Effective leadership requires not

only doing the right things, but also understanding what not to do. Here are five
mistakes any business owner or manager
should avoid.

Critical mistake No. 2:

Failing to consistently affirm
As a leader, are you encouraging or are
you an encourager or neither? One of the
most powerful if not the most powerful
tools to embolden, motivate and energize
employees is the power of affirmation. Affirming is simply catching people doing
things right and telling them about it. Dont
just think it; express it!
An effective leader is always on the
lookout for opportunities to answer the
soul-felt questions on the minds of their
employees: Do I matter? and Does what
I do around here matter? Answer those
questions by being specific about the employees positive actions. Always tie the
positive action you observe to the beneficial
business outcome.
Being encouraging is something you
do, but being an encourager is something
you are. If you are an encourager, affirmations will emanate from your lips regularly.

Critical mistake No. 1: Failing to

schedule time for learning conversations
You do what you schedule. When you
listen, you learn. Leaders should only do
what no one else can do, and no one can
listen to your employees like you.
Schedule regular opportunities to ask
them clear and concise questions and then
discipline yourself to actively listen. This
will give you vital information to implement
two of a leaders main functions: removing

Critical mistake No. 3: Misdiagnosing

When you visit the doctor, he or she
always asks a succession of questions and
many times follows up with a battery of
tests before prescribing any action to remedy an illness. Why? For the safety of the
patient and for the critical business benefit
of avoiding a malpractice lawsuit! The exception to this would be in an emergency
situation where time is of the essence.

decisions as if you live in the emergency

room, the health of your business is going
to be in a constant state of trauma. A proper
diagnosis of your companys ailments is
required to make the decisions necessary
for a healthy, prosperous business. This
requires gathering accurate information
(much of which can be ascertained by
avoiding mistake No. 1) instead of randomly moving ahead with activity, which may
or may not produce the desired results.
Sometimes small-business owners
seek outside help to treat a problem that
has been improperly, inadequately or incorrectly diagnosed. Before getting assistance,
owners should answer this question: What
do I want to accomplish? Only then can a
decision be made on the fastest, most effective way to achieve the desired outcome.
Critical mistake No. 4:
Wearing the wrong hat
Trainer. Monitor. Cheerleader. Fixer.
Disciplinarian. Which hat do you wear?
Probably all of them and more!
This dilemma is further augmented by
the maturity (or immaturity) of your staff.
The challenge is not only knowing what hat
you should wear, but also wearing the right
hat at the right time.
If your staff is relatively new, its important to be participatory in your leadership
style, regardless of the hat you are wearing.
As the employees develop, your style shifts
to a hands-on leader. You then can transition to a benevolent dictator as you ensure
each employee is appropriately focused in
his or her actions. When the team matures
and is highly functioning, your style can
shift to free-rein leadership as you equip
them to be self-sustaining.
Your style shifts and your hats change.
Your leadership flexibility is regularly
challenged. Change hats as often as circumstances dictate and be aware of the
leadership style required based on the developmental maturity of your employees.
Critical mistake No. 5:
Not taking responsibility
There are things you cannot control, so
stop wasting time and precious emotional
energy on these things.

influence.
There are things you can control, so stop making excuses for those

While the lifting of the export ban will
eventually have a big impact on the U.S.based oil production companies, it will
have little immediate impact, according to
industry officials.
MINIMAL IMPACT TO START
A number of factors lead oil industry
experts to believe that the repeal will have
minimal impact on crude oil prices and the
industry in the initial years.
For example, global storage is full,
Iranian exports are beginning this year,
and global trade is slowing. Another big
factor is that the spread between American
oil and international benchmark prices
has narrowed in recent months, making
American exports less competitive.
With the price downturn this past
year, companies are shutting down rigs
and production is beginning to drop.
Few executives believe 2016 will be much
better, and companies are cutting their
exploration budgets.
The U.S., which is the
third-biggest oil producer
after Russia and Saudi Arabia,
currently produces about 9.2
million bpd, about half of
which is shale production.

BENEFITS OF
LIFTING THE BAN
Industry experts do
say that the lifting of the
ban should give some oil
companies in the U.S.
new markets and extra
flexibility. That could mean

the difference between shutting down or

sustaining production in places like Texas
and North Dakota, where the downturn in
the oil prices is hitting hard.
Connecting U.S. oil production to
global markets will have national security
impacts, says David Goldwyn in an
Associated Press story. Goldwyn was the
top energy diplomat in the State Department
in the first Obama administration.
As the market recovers it will enable
struggling American companies to meet
rising demand.
Oil executives say that the repeal
will open new markets for American
oil in Mexico, South Korea, Japan and
China over the next several years, easing
those countries dependence on unstable
supplies from the Middle East, North Africa
and Russia.
Lifting of the ban will also provide
another challenge to OPEC, which has been
allowing market forces to set prices for the
past year, abandoning its previous policy of
manipulating prices through output quotas.
Its just more oil being introduced
into a widely oversupplied market, says
John Kilduff, partner with Again Capital,
in an interview with NBC. At times this
could be problematic for OPEC because
of the intense shift in market share thats
already underway. This could hurt them on
the edges.
The U.S. already exports 4.5 million
barrels a day of refined petroleum products
such as gasoline and diesel, and industry
executives say an additional half-million
to 1 million barrels a day of crude exports
could come in the next several years. Thats
not a big number considering the global
market is at about 94 million bpd.
U.S. crude exports are unlikely to
impact the big picture in global oil markets
given that the U.S. is still a major importer of
crude to the tune of 7 million bpd or close to
7 percent of current global production, Badr
H. Jafar, president of Crescent Petroleum,
based in the United Arab Emirates, told the
Associated Press. Any U.S. exports will
have to be matched by increased imports,
leaving the global crude supply-demand
balance unchanged. GOMC

INCREASING SAFETY
THROUGH FLEET TRACKING
Fleet management programs offer employers and drivers
many options to help them stay safe on the road
By Doug Day

officer for Vehicle Tracking Solutions in

Commack, New York, which has offered its
Silent Passenger fleet management service
since 2002. Companies always want to
find ways to increase the bottom line, be
more efficient and be more productive.
Fleet management will certainly do that
for you.
It can also help companies monitor
things that increase the risk of vehicle accidents and personal injuries.
One of the objections in the
past to using fleet management systems for monitoring
drivers is the Big Brother
aspect of it. Wilkinson understands that reaction, saying it should not be used as
a punitive measure or as a
watchdog. You have to look
at this as a way to improve
upon best practices, managing and optimizing your
operations when it comes to
safety, he says. Driver safety
has become a core piece that
every company is responsible
for today.
Silent Passenger includes a speed management
component, but Wilkinson
says fleet management can
do a lot more to help companies, and drivers, increase
safety. With our software
you can monitor vehicle
speeds against the posted
www.facebook.com/GOMCmag
speed limit, you can see the

ompanies around the world are using fleet tracking systems to improve
their financial performance. Many of
them, however, may be missing opportunities to make work safer for employees by using features and data available through the
same fleet management technology.
In the gas, oil and mining industries,
fleet management should start with safety,
says Ryan Wilkinson, chief technology

fuel management), but can also monitor

seatbelt usage and hard breaking and acceleration, which could be a sign of driver
issues.
The software also allows companies
to record incident reports immediately in
the field, do hazard assessments of work
sites, track employee safety and training
history, conduct safety meetings and track
drivers licenses. Those are things that
make fleet management software work
more effectively, he says.
The key, stresses Wilkinson, is to use
the information to reward good behavior
rather than reprimanding bad behavior.
He says his firm has helped companies
use the data to create driver scorecards
to provide a broad measure of safety and
encourage safe driving. It can be used as
an incentive for drivers, he says. If your
driver scorecard is more than 90 for the
month, maybe you get a day off or a gift.

You have to look at this as a

way to improve upon best
practices, managing and
optimizing your operations
when it comes to safety.
Ryan Wilkinson
We are trying to find ways to make
it more company-focused, where there is a
benefit for drivers and they can be part of
the solution instead of looking at them as
part of the problem.
Besides reducing accidents and the
associated costs such as lost employee
time, vehicle repairs and increased
insurance costs, improved driving habits
also add to the bottom line by improving
vehicle and dispatch efficiency. Were
stressing more and more every day, and
try to get very involved in reminding our
customers, how critical safety is as part of
the business they run every day. GOMC

the chassis engine to eliminate the need for PTO,
clutch and gearbox operation. It offers water
systems up to 4,000 psi and a mobile wireless
remote control, enabling the operator to work the
chassis engine rpm, boom, automatic vacuum
breaker, dump controls and hydraulic door locks
from up to a 1/2 mile away. The boom rotates 270
degrees. 855/336-2962; www.vac-con.com.

25. Vacall AllExcavate

Vacall AllExcavate hydroexcavators have
a step-in compartment to provide operators with
warmth and protection from inclement weather,
making them ideal for winter weather digging sites
or oil and gas exploration locations. The standard
heated compartment is roomy, with enough space
for an operator to change out of wet and muddy
clothing. The compartment has floor drainage,
racks to hang dry clothing, heated cabinets for
the hose reel and water pumps, and boilers that
can heat water for more effective hydroexcavation
in frozen ground. The unit uses high-pressure
jetting action to loosen soil, rocks and clay, and
then vacuum forces up to 27 inches Hg and 5,800
cfm to remove the material and water slurry into a
debris tank. 800/382-8302; www.vacall.com.

clean out manholes, catch basins, wash pits,

and valve and meter boxes; and wash equipment
and property. Damage associated with backhoes
or shovels to buried utilities are avoided using
high-pressure water to dig in all types of soil. The
rotary vane pump provides a strong vacuum for
greater depths, distance and speed. It allows the
operator to vacuum and pothole great distances,
permitting backyard and previously inaccessible
work areas. The pressure mode allows clogs to be
removed from the vacuum hose and the contents
to be maintained under the controlled dump
mode. 319/656-3434; www.vacstar.com.

27. Vactor HXX HydroExcavator

The HXX HydroExcavator from Vactor
provides up to seven hours of continuous operation
with the onboard water. Standard variable-flow
water systems allow lower water flow, resulting in
less operator fatigue and a cleaner, more precise
digging process. The systems also allow up to
25 gpm for those projects requiring higher water
flow capabilities. For safer operation around
utilities, DigRight Technology allows the operator
to select the maximum desired working water
pressure for their application based on vacuum
excavation best practices. This selection will limit
the water pump from exceeding site, industry or
customer maximum pressures to ensure a safe
and nondestructive method of excavation. It
also reduces wear and tear on the water system,
extending the life of the product. Its boom
turret design provides increased vertical range of

motion for improved operator performance and

productivity, enabling the operator to complete
most applications with only one dig tube,
eliminating the need for additional vacuum tubes.

The Centurion Guide Radar from Hawk

Measurement Systems uses time-domain reflectometry, passing concentrated radar pulses through
a rod or cable from the sensor to the material being
measured. The dielectric constant of the measured
material causes a change in impedance that in turn
develops a wave reflection. That reflection is sent
back up the probe to the sensor, where the transit
time is translated into distance using time of flight
and time expansion. It is able to measure extremely
low dielectric (1.5) to provide precise and continuous measurement. Since pulses are directed via a
guide, factors like surface turbulence, foams, pressure, dust, vacuum, vapors, temperature, dielectric
constant or tank obstructions do not influence
the measurement. It offers auto-calibration to any
dielectric constant greater than or equal to 1.5,
adjustable sensitivity and simple setup. 978/3043000; www.hawkmeasure.com.

Doosan vertical light towers provide
quick setup, ease of transportation
By Ed Wodalski
LSV6 and LSV8 portable light towers from Doosan Portable
Power feature a compact design for greater maneuverability and ease of
transport. Both towers have four 1,000-watt metal halide lamps with
an LED option and six-section masts that manually extend to 25 feet 6
inches. A hydraulically actuated tower is optional.
The tower always stays in a vertical position, says Deree Bivins,
lighting systems product manager, Doosan Portable Power. Theyre easy
to set up and require less manual labor, especially with the hydraulic
tower option turn the breaker on and flip the switch up or flip the
switch down. Setup takes a minute or two versus five or 10 minutes.
The light towers are 99.1 inches long and 49 inches wide with a
travel height of 99 inches. The compact design enables 16 fully assembled
light towers to be carried on a 48-foot flatbed truck. The LSV6 has a Mecc
Alte 6 kW alternator powered by a Tier 4 Final Kubota D1005BG diesel
engine, and the LSV8 has a Mecc Alte 8 kW alternator powered by a Tier
4 Final Kubota D1105 engine. A 42.2-gallon diesel fuel tank provides 82
hours of runtime with four halide lights.
The large fuel tank is a key feature because the user can refuel
less often, Bivins says. In gas and mining applications, where the light
towers are often in remote locations, service workers dont have to go out
as often. With the LED option, users can potentially double the runtime
of the light tower versus the traditional metal halide.
The LED lights are rated for 50,000 hours.

1.

Youll never have to replace a fixture, she says.

A pin system enables the light head to be rotated where needed.
Both towers enable operators to simultaneously run power tools or
heaters while providing optimal illumination.
With the LSV6, the standard control panel has a 20-amp, 120volt GFCI duplex receptacle with a 240-volt/25-amp twist-lock option,
Bivins says. The LSV8 has two 120-volt duplex receptacles and a 240volt twist-lock on the control panel.
Standard configuration on both LSV models includes a detachable
drawbar for towing, 2-inch ball hitch and 520 cold-cranking amps (CCA)
battery. Options on both towers include drip containment, 100 percent
containment, combination hitch, lockable battery disconnect and electric
fuel pump.
The electric fuel pump option dramatically shortens the machine
downtime by eliminating the manual process, Bivins says. The option
re-primes the fuel system. If the light tower does run out of fuel, it is
quickly back up and running with the electric fuel pump option.
Cold weather options include block heater, block/battery heaters and
1,000 CCA battery. 800/633-5206; www.doosanportablepower.com.
