Think about the list of characteristics

again. For each image, use the categories
to describe the subject.

Reflection Time
1. What were the identity characteristics you established for
each of their stories?
2. Why do you think you were successful or not successful in
defining those categories for someone else?
3. What assumptions did you make in order to do that? What
do those assumptions tell you about yourself?
4. What did you learn from this activity?

Take a Look at Yourself

Now, lets spend some time
thinking about our own
identities.
The following activity will
take you through a series of
21 statements that
contribute to your personal
identity. These are all
important pieces that
contribute to who you are.

And a River Run Throughs It

Reflection Time
Take a moment to look back at the statements about yourself.
1. Were you surprised by anything?
2. How did this activity help you to better understand who
you are as a person?
3. How did this activity help you to better understand others?

RACE
CULTURE
ETHNICITY

WHAT IS YOUR RACE,

CULTURE AND
ETHNICITY?

Definitions
Race-relates more to the appearance of a person, especially the color of their skin. Race
is determined biologically, and includes other inherited genetic traits such as hair and
eye color and bone and jaw structure, among other things.
Culture- The set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an
institution, organization or group, which are socially transmitted
Ethnicity- Culture is similar to ethnicity, yet more of a microcosm of it. Culture may
involve one trait or characteristic, sort of like a subset of the various traits that make up
an ethnicity. Perhaps a person may be ethnically Jewish, or they could subject
themselves to simply one or two things of Jewish culture, such as wearing a kippa; this
person may not necessarily relate with the entire macro-ethnicity that is being Jewish.
