On this Fifth Sunday of Lent, we are assured by God

that He will do something new to make us forget the
past and look forward eagerly to the future. God
reminds the people that Nature and even wild beasts
honor him, so should we, by renewing our praise and
worship of Him, who has saved us.
Saint Paul in the Second Reading speaks eloquently
of his total conversion. Whereas he lived in the past
for knowledge and glory, now everything he
considers to be a loss, because he has got everything
he wanted and wants in possessing Christ and his
Message. Not too many of us can repeat or even
accept the essential theme of Pauls message today.
We are still very much attached to and engaged in
conquering the world! Paul was totally committed to
Christ. However, he knows that he has to carry on
training himself in the practice of Christian virtues.
Even when we know that we are on the right path,
we must be careful. The devil is clever and extremely
cunning.
The Pharisees and Scribes who kept every bit of the
Law and sought to punish others based on their selfrighteousness, were humbled by Jesus with the story
of the woman who was caught in adultery. The
sinner was reconciled! The self-righteous went away
one by one, in anger or in shame.

HAS NO ONE CONDEMNED YOU?

SAINT OF THE WEEK

SAINT CATHERINE OF SWEDEN

ANNOUNCEMENTS

CONFESSIONS
Our Lenten Penance Service will be at 6.30 PM
on Tuesday March 15. We will have about ten
Priests of the Vicariate who will be here to
assist us in making a good Confession and
prepare ourselves well for Easter. Christ came
to reconcile us to the Father. The Sacrament of
Reconciliation is an assurance to us of Gods
Mercy and Forgiveness.

St. Cyril of Jerusalem

(313-386)
Feast Day March 18
Little is known about St. Cyrils youth however
historians believe that his parents were Christians
and that is what led Cyril to the church. St. Cyril
was a deacon, a priest, and then became the Bishop
of Jerusalem after Maximus died. During a famine,
St. Cyril sold goods and property from the church
to feed the poor. His actions resulted in him being
accused of stealing from the church and he was
banished three times. He was finally cleared of all
accusations and returned to Palestine. Cyril is
known as one of the early Church Fathers, Doctor
of the Church and Defender of the Catholic Faith.
Father,
through Cyril of Jerusalem
you led your Church to a deeper understanding
of the mysteries of salvation.
Let his prayers help us to know your Son better
and to have eternal life in all its fullness.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

This Sunday's Gospel reading shows us a good example of how to treat

someone who is,
as Jesus says
elsewhere in scripture (Matt. 25) "the
least of
these."
The recipient of
Christ's compassion in this story
was considered to
be unworthy of life
itself. She was first
of all a woman,
which in her society meant she was
inferior to men.
She was a sinner
and deserved punishment. She was
one single person facing a
condemning crowd alone.
How much more of a "least"
one could anyone be?
When have you felt alone
and insignificant? Perhaps
you've faced a condemning
crowd. Then again, have you
ever treated others as if
they're not important? Yes,
none of us can cast the first
stone.

There are many in the

Church who feel forgotten
and neglected. We all know some of them. Their loneliness is usually hidden from us, and if we're busy with
many important responsibilities, seeking them out and
giving them attention feels too overwhelming. Their
needs become too insignificant to warrant the expense
of our time, the development of parish resources, and
the sacrifice of our personal comfort.

Divorced Catholics often feel condemned, and many who could be

receiving Communion stay away because they've been misinformed
about the Church's rules, and no
one is reaching out to
lead them back. And
although the Church
has been stopping
abuses against children, often the lustful
or abusive treatment
of adults is never addressed,
because
they are dismissed as
"less vulnerable"
they are of least concern.
Identifying the least
among us and reaching out to them is a
good Lenten exercise
-- but only if the intention is to make
it a year-round habit.

Reflect & Discuss:

1. Which persons are you neglecting because their situation
makes you feel uncomfortable or
inadequate? Which members of
your family or parish do you
avoid because you like them
"least" of all? Begin to give them
compassionate
attention
by
praying for them, then discern if
the Lord is inspiring you to do
anything more.
2. Share the story of a time when
you encountered or were one
of "the least of these". Did anyone show compassion? How?
3. Where was Jesus? How was he
helping?
