About Doordarshan
It is a division of Prasar Bharti, a public service
broadcaster nominated by the Government of India.
The DD provides television, radio, online and mobile
services throughout metropolitan and regional India, as
well as overseas through the Indian Network and Radio
India.
It started its operation in 1959. Now, Doordarshan
operates 30 channels in 22 languages and is one of the
largest terrestrial network in the world.
90% of the Indian population can receive DD
programmes through a network of nearly 1400 terrestrial
transmitters.

Production Chain

TV Studio
It is an installation in which television productions
take place. It is divided into 2 major areas:

Action Area
This place having large
space and ceiling includes
staging, lighting,
performance by artists and
arrangement to pickup
sound and picture

Production Control
Room
Activities in this area
are:
a. Direction to the
production
crew by the producer
of the program.
b. Timing a production.
c. Editing of different
sources available at
production desk.
d. Monitoring of
output/off air signal.

Studio Lighting
Doordarshan uses 125 direct lights and 48
dimmers hanged on winches in main recording
studio.
KEY LIGHT:- highlight any object or to give
attention toward the person
FILL LIGHT:- suppress the shadow made by key
light. It is used to fill the light in whole room.
BACK LIGHT: - separate artist from the
background to produce 3D visualization
BACKGROUND LIGHT :- highlight the
background of the scene or to create color
background on white cyclorama
The three point lighting ratio 3:2:1(back: key: fill)
in monochrome and 3:2:2 in color provide good

Vision Mixer
A vision mixer (video
switcher or production
switcher) is a device used
to select between several
different video sources and
in some cases mix video
sources together and add
special effects.
It has many input sources
such as cameras, VCR/
server, Graphics/ Character
generators, etc.
Sources can be changed as
cut to cut, dissolve, wipe
and other special effects.

MSR (Master switching

Room)
It is the heart of the
studio.
Most of the switching
electronics such as
camera base stations,
switcher main frame,
SPG, Satellite receivers,
MW link, DDA & most of
the patch panels are
kept here
Signal is routed through
MSR.
Signal can be Monitored
at various stages

TV System
It is possible to obtain
any desired color by
mixing three primary
colors i.e. Red, Blue and
green in a suitable
proportion.
It is only required to
convert optical
information of these three
colors to electrical signals
and transmit it on
different carriers to be
decoded by the receiver.
This can then be
converted back to the
optical image at the
picture tube

 So the pick up from the cameras and output for the

picture tube should consist of three signals i.e. R, G and
B.
It is only in between the camera and the picture tube of
the receiver we need a system to transmit this
information

OB Van
The mobile Production Control Room (PCR) is known as
OB Van
It is the Electronic Field Production (EFP) of television
and radio programmes from a mobile remote broadcast
television studio.
It is usually divided into 5 parts
a. Production area
b. Audio engineering area
c. Video Tape Recording(VTR) area
d. Transmission area: signal is engineered for quality
control purposes and is sent to other areas
e. Camera Control Unit (CCU)

Earth station
It is an uplink center from
which the signals are fed to
Satellite for distribution in a
specified area covered by
the Satellite
The signal is up-linked from
the Earth Station and
received by many down link
centers in TV broad casting
via PDA.

Gathering (DSNG)
It is like a digital Earth Station
Programmes may be uplinked through DSNG from any
place.
DSNG makes it possible to bring live news and sport to
million of viewers.
Components of DSNG:
1. PDA (Parabolic Dish Antenna)
2. FEED SYSTEM
3. HPA (High Power Amplifier)
4. LNA (Low Noise Amplifier)
