WEEK 27
TERM: 2

WEEK OF: 28/2/2016-3/3/2016

TEACHER: MS. JENICA

FOCUS/THEME: Chapter 7: Matter

Lesson 2: What are solids, liquids, and
gases?

CLASS LEVEL: Grade 1

COMMON CORE STANDARDS:

Students will develop an understanding of the concepts, models, theories, universal principles, and facts that explain the
physical world.
Strand Standard:
PS.1 Students will develop an understanding of the characteristic properties of matter and the relationship of these
properties to their structure and behavior.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE(S): Students will identify matter as a solid, liquid, or gas.

TEXTS/ MATERIALS/ RESOURCES:

Workbook, SmartBoard, Science Book, mini-boards, Youtube

WARMING UP/ LEAD IN / Preview / Review
Day 1: Discuss different types of liquids and gases that we see every day. Ex: water and air
Day 2: Using your baggie from Day 1, blow air into the bag and pass it around the classroom. Have the students feel how the
bag changes shape.
Day 3: Using your baggie with the rock from Day 1, pass it around the classroom and remind the students that this rock
does not change shape.

TEACHER INSTRUCTION AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES:

Day 1: - Liquids and Gases Using the EXPLORE tab on Chapter 7 Lesson 2
pearsonsuccess.net, play the tutorial on the different kinds of matter. Using the
plastic bags given for instruction, show the students the different types of
matter and allow them to touch each one so they can feel the difference. Be sure
to discuss how these 3 bags are the same and how they are different; write the
answers on the Smartboard with the students. Using the EXPLAIN tab, choose

balloons, boiling water, frying pan, green bowl, and the orange juice.
If there is time, after listening to the tutorial on these different types of matter,
have the students use their Science Journals to draw and write about one of these
examples.

students can draw pictures

only. Encourage them to
write 2 or 3 words to describe
their pictures.

Day 2: SCIENCE LAB (assessment)

Have the students choose one object from the room and write about it in their
Science Labs.

Day 3: Science Project (assessment) A Book That Matters This is a
science project on solids, liquids, and gases. The objective is to show that
students understand and can give examples of three types of matter. Using the
magazines and newspapers that the students brought in, have the students cut
out pictures of solids, liquids, and gases and glue them to the project handout.

Enrichment
-

Encourage the advanced

students to read the
passages aloud to the class.

Have higher students lead

lower ability groups in
reviewing vocabulary.

Day 4: - Science Project (assessment) A Book That Matters Finish the

science projects. If the students are finished, they can do the extra States of
Matter worksheet.

High-level students can write

more than one sentence and
elaborate on their drawings.
