STRAIGHT CONNECTOR WITH LL CHANGE-OUT

PURPOSE
To safely change-out a clotted or faulty connector.

SITE APPLICABILITY
Applicable to all areas within BCCH and all patients requiring ECLS.

PRACTICE LEVEL/COMPETENCIES
ECLS is considered an advanced skill and only those with advanced training in ECLS are to perform this
task.

Perfusionist

In the event of an emergency or directed by the Perfusionist:

ECLS Team Leader

ECLS Specialist

EQUIPMENT
1. 8 clamps.
2. Sterile towels
3. Sterile scissors
4. 2 x 60 ml syringes
5. Sterile connector
6. Sterile gloves (staff protection)
7. 2% chlorhexidine gluconate with 70% alcohol swab
8. Sterile Stopcock
PROCEDURE
1. Prepare for separation as per protocol.
2. Cool the patient if applicable (see cooling guidelines).
3. Separate as per routine.
4. Place clamp #1 at connector inlet tubing and place clamp # 2 one inch away from clamp #1..
5. Place clamp # 3 at connector outlet, tubing and place clamp #4 on in ch away from clamp #3.
6. 2% chlorhexidine gluconate with 70% alcohol swab between clamps number one and two, three and
four.
7. Aseptically cut at clamp #1 and #3.
8. Insert new connector into inlet tubing.
9. Attach stopcock to LL port of connector.
10. Prime the stopcock with crystalloid.

11. Prime inlet tubing with crystalloid via stopcock.


12. Fill outlet tubing by spilling from the connector into the tubing.
13. Attach connector and outlet tubing together.
14. Turn stopcock off to everything.
15. Remove clamps #2 and #4.
16. Remove bridge clamp.
17. Turn the pump RPM to 1000 and re-circulate via the bridge.
18. Check for air at the oxygenator, heat exchanger and Pump head.
19. If no air clamp bridge and resume ECLS as per routine.
20. Discard old equipment.

DOCUMENTATION
Chart all ECLS parameters on ECLS flow sheet.
