Discourse Community Response
Throughout the past, people have shown a tendency to form groups. These groups tend to share
the same goals, abilities, and views etc. I for one have noticed the way that becoming part of the
community could affect communication on a daily basis. For example, some of my friends come
from different personalities some are more kept to themselves and arent involved within the
community which makes them really quite people. Where on the other hand the people that are
more involved within the community are more confident in oneself and is less afraid to speak
out.
Within the discourse community of Family, you are born into the family that you were meant to
be in. There is really no rules or regulation to joining a family for you are born into the family in
which you are in. However, on the other hand when you plan to marry into the family the person
seems to gain the trust, love, and respect of the family before becoming a part of the family.
Every family has goals within their family. My goals for within my family is to be able to spend
more time with each other, talk more with them, and to go out and have more fun with them. I
would like to be able to spend more time with my family and just go out and do fun things with
each other such as shopping, going to the movies, roller skating, and etc. Within the family we
communicate with texting, social media, calls, Emails, and instant messaging. With these
methods it helps us to stay communicated and not lose communication with each other.
Communication within families is about family time and close relationships such as talking
about personal business and problems within ones life. You wouldnt have talked to your family

using the language that you use with your friends such as lol, lmao, u, wbu? And etc. Instead
we actually spell out or words such as you, and how you are etc. The discourse community of
family is filled with close relationships, good memories, and friends.
The discourse community of school is much less personal and more formal in the way you talk to
your professor. In order to get into a university there are certain steps that lead into getting
accepted into the university in which you are applying to. When applying to UTEP I had to
submit an application through the website applytexas.com. After the application was sent I also
had to send in my high school transcript. After I got a conformation of my acceptance into UTEP
I had to send in my shot record to insure I had all my shots up to date. Before classes begin the
new students must attend what is called New Student Orientation to help to get familiar with the
campus itself. Every student has goals within their journey through education, some of the goals
that most students share is to get good grades, be organized, and to stay on top of classes. To help
insure these goals are met students use books, computers, supplies, calculators, and etc.
However, the language used within the classroom is more professional in the point to where
everything isnt personally and there is no teen language.
The discourse community of friends has a close relation to family but also has certain differences
in the factor of language, and goals. How friends become friends is by hanging out,
communication and being social with each other. After hanging out more a bond starts to form
thus creating the friendship. Communication between each other is done by social media, call,
texting, instant messaging, and emails. The language that we share which is referred to teen
language is what we call lol, lmao, tbh, and wbu? this language is not a formal way of talking
where formal language would be instead of putting tbh you would write out the actually words

which is to be honest. Goals within the discourse community is to build trust within each other
and to be there for each other.
My last discourse community is my Womans Fraternity Alpha Xi Delta Iota Eta Chapter. In
order become a part of the Fraternity we must first start by going through the recruitment
process, once selected for the Fraternity you must pay your dues, and attend the social events that
we have. Alpha Xi Deltas goals is to raise money for Autism speaks and to help women find
their true potential. Within our discourse community we communicate using social media, group
messaging, and emails. Our specialized language for our Womans Fraternity is very casual we
dont talk formal but we dont talk like teens while in meetings, and we also use the Greek
Alphabet for our Fraternity name. The reason why we are called a Womans Fraternity is because
when we were first discovered the word sorority wasnt established yet. The Bond that this
discourse community is like the bond that is shared with family and friends.
In conclusion within my discourse community between most of the communities there is
a bond that is shared between the people and me which builds a strong relationship and a long
lasting friendship. My discourse community is filled with strong bonds and friendships that
shows I am always searching for close bonds and great friendships.
