This unit is in the Grade 12. University Preparation course of the Health and Physical Education curriculum. The unit focusses
the anatomy of the human body and more specifically, looks at musculoskeletal anatomy (muscles and bones) as well as internal
anatomy (organs and nerves). The overall expectations concentrate on the structure and function of the major body systems involved
in human movement, and anatomical and physiological concepts, as well as the factors that affect performance during human
movement.
During the unit, students will learn in several ways; self-directed inquiry based learning, lectured, communicating and
studying. The unit will start with the introduction of muscles and bones (musculoskeletal anatomy). Students will be introduced to
their inquiry project and design a plan for a path they would like to pursue with their self-directed learning. They will be taught how to
properly take and record their vital signs. Also students will work to complete 2 anatomy workbooks, 1 designated for each of the
anatomy topics.
Students will be assessed and evaluated in several ways. The breakdown of assignments and quizzes are summarized above.
Specifically, various rubrics and KWL charts will be used throughout the unit as a form of assessment as learning. Anecdotal
comments will be recorded to acknowledge student participation and understanding. The summary of assessments above cover the
assessment of learning for the unit.
