TheQur'anhasbeenwithoutdoubtthemostinfluentialbookinthehistoryofmankind,inthe
samewayasthegreatProphettowhomitwasrevealedhasbeenthemostinfluentialofmen.
Togethertheyhaveheraldedanewandultimateerainthehistoryofmankind.Thisinfluenceis
boundtoincreasewiththedevelopmentofman'sawarenessofthehigherdimensionsofhuman

rhetoric,andaboveallitsdeepandpassionateconcernforthegoodofallhumanbeings,which
permeatesallitschaptersandverses.ThebeautyandsublimityoftheQur'anicdiscourseis
somethingwhichhastobediscovereddirectlybyeveryonetotheextentofhiscapacityand
effort,fortherichnessoftheQur'anisinexhaustible.

Unlikeothermasterpiecesofworldliteratureandscriptures,whoseinterestandappealislimited
toanaudiencewithaparticularliterarytasteorsomereligiouscreed,theQur'anisthebookof
theordinaryhumanbeing,andmeantforeachandeveryhumanbeing.Itaddresseseveryhuman
individualquahumanbeingandcreatureofGod.

SincethefirstcenturyofHijrah,continuouseffortshavebeenmadebyMuslimstomakethe
meaningsoftheQur'anaccessibletononArabcommunities.Therehavealsobeenseveral
unfortunateattemptstotranslatetheQur'anwithahostileintentordeviantpurpose.Insuch
cases,thegreathealer,theQur'an,hasonlyaggravatedthesicknessofthosewhoapproachedit
withamaliciousmotive,andthisgreatspringofspirituallifehashadtheeffectofthedeadliestof
poisons.

Despitetheenormousamountofeffortthathasbeenmadeduringthepastcenturiesand
notwithstandingthenumeroustranslationsthathaveappearedinmanylanguagesoftheworld
andthenewonesthatcontinuetoappearalmosteveryyear,anerrorfreetranslationofthe
Qur'aninanylanguageincludingPersianandUrduwhichhavebeenclosesttotheQur'anic
culturestillremainsanunfulfilleddream.Apartfrommatterspertainingtoliteraryexpertisein
classicalArabicandthetargetlanguage,

familiaritywiththevastfieldofQur'anicsciencesandespeciallywiththehermeneutictraditionof
thepast14centuriesandtheworksofmajorexegetesisessentialforthetranslatoroftheQur'an.

TheQur'anisthebookoflifemeanttolastuntiltheDayofJudgment.Itsmeaningsandconcerns
areperennialandeverlasting.Itsrootsarefirm,anditsbranchesareinheaven;itgivesits
produceeveryseasonbytheleaveofitsLord(14:25).Itisanexhaustiblesourceofmeaning,
meetingtheneedsofchangingtimes,thoughitswordsanddictionremainfixedand
unchangeable.Thusthehumanefforttoextractitsmeaningsisanunendingtaskofinterpreting
andunderstandingtheQur'an,anunderstandingthatlinkstheeternaltothetemporal,the
terrestrialtothecelestial,themundanetothetranscendent,andtherelativetotheAbsolute.

HenceineveryeraeffortshavetobemadetotranslatetheBookinthelanguageofthedayandto
interpretitinthelightofaccumulatedhumanknowledgeandQur'anicscholarship.Inviewofthis

perpetualnecessity,thereistheneedtodevelopasoundandsystematicmethodologyfor
translatingandinterpretingtheQur'anindifferentlanguagesofhumankind,fortotranslatethe
Qur'anistointerpretit.

Forthepurposesofsuchaprojectitmightbeessentialtoundertakeastudyoftheexisting
translationsandtoevaluatethemfromtheviewpointofliterarystrength,loyaltytothemeanings
oftheoriginal,proprietyandprecisionofthewordsandexpressionsusedinthetranslation,and,
aboveall,thetranslator'sdegreeoffamiliaritywiththeexegeticaltraditionandthecorpusof
hadithnarratedfromtheProphet(S)andtheImam'softhePropheticHousehold(a).

TheyaretheinterpretersoftheQur'anparexcellence,foritistheywhoarethefirstaddressees
oftheQur'an,andtothemonemustreferforsettlingquestionsrelatingtoQur'anichermeneutics
aswellasforauthoritativeinterpretationincasesofdisagreementininterpretingQur'anicverses
al1ddeterminingtheQur'anicviewpointconcerningvariousissues.

Thatwhichcouldbeveryusefulinthisregardissomekindofamanualthatmightofferalmosta
versetoverseguidancetothetranslator,especiallyifthetranslationisbeingdonefromexisting
translationsandtherelavantworksarenotaccessibletothetranslator.

Chapter1:TheCentrefortheTranslationortheQur'an

ThiscentrewhichhasbeenestablishedinrecentyearsbytheAwqafandCharitiesOrganizationof
theIslamicRepublicofIraninthecityofQumisintheprocessofpreparingacomprehensive
studyoftheproblemsinvolvedinthetranslationoftheQur'anandthefrequenterrorsof
translationandinterpretationmadebytranslators.Itslongtermgoalistopublishreliable
translationsoftheHolyQur'aninvariouslanguagesoftheworldbeginningwithsomeofthe
majormodernlanguages.

PresentlyitisengagedincollectingalltheexistingtranslationsoftheQur'aninvariouslanguages.
Untilnowithascollectedmorethan200translationsandeditionsinnearly50languages.Ithas
issuedacallforthecooperationandassistanceinthisprojectofallinterestedscholarsand
institutionsthroughouttheworldsothatauniqueworldcollectionofthetranslationsofthe
Qur'an,completeandpartial,accessibletoscholarsandresearchersthroughouttheworld,could
beestablished.

Ithasalsoplanstomakethetranslationsavailableoncomputerdiskettessoastomakethem
availabletoresearchersandscholarsforfuturework.TheCentrehasalsocalleduponQur'anic
scholarsandexpertsthroughouttheworldtoassistitinthetaskofpreciseevaluationofthe
existingtranslationsindifferentlanguages.

TheAwqafOrganizationhasalsoestablishedamajorpublishinghouseinthecityofQumwith
considerableprintingfacilities,withanannualcapacityofprintingabout3millioncopies,forthe
purposeofmakingtheQur'ananditstranslationsavailabletoMuslimcommunitiesthroughout
theworld.

ThefieldofQur'anicstudiesisavastdisciplinethatisconstantlyexpanding.Everyyearthere
appearnumerousworksdealingwithdiverseaspectsoftheQur'anandsomeoftheearlierworks
becomeavailableforthefirsttimeinprint.Apartfromscoresofarticlesinvariousjournalsand
thesesthatarewritten(seetheQur'anicbibliographyof'AbdalJabbaralRafa'i,Mu'jamal
dirasatalQur'aniyyah[Qum:MarkazeFarhangwaMa'arifeQur'an1372H.Sh./1993Jwhichhas

translationsand883selectionsandpartialtranslationsin65languages.Thecomplete
translations,sofarasthesurveyhasrecordedtheirdifferenteditions,wereprinted829timesand
theselectionsandpartialworks409times.Thetotalnumbersofeditionslistedis2072.

Atotalof135librarycatalogues,nationalbibliographies,indices,papers,articles,aswellaslibrary
collectionsindifferentcenturieswereresearched.Prof.Ihsanogluhaswrittenaprefaceandan
introduction(whoseArabicversionappearsattheend),entitled"IntroductiontotheHistoryof
TranslatingtheMeaningsoftheHolyQur'an."Theintroductionisfollowedbyamentionofthe
rulesadoptedinthearrangementoftheentriesandthesourcesofreference.Aname,title,anda
chronologicalindexareplacedattheend.

IntheintroductiontheauthorgivesanoutlineoftheviewsofMuslimscholarsandjurists
concerningthetranslationoftheQur'aningeneralanditsuseasasubstitutefortheArabic
originalinprayer.ThegeneralopinionoftheIslamicschoolsoflawconsidersthetranslationof
theQur'anaslegitimateorevennecessary,butdisapprovesofitsuseasasubstituteforArabicin
prayer.

Theeditionsundereverylanguagearelistedalphabeticallyaccordingtothenamesofthe
translatorsandundereachname,mostly,inachronologicalorder.Theavailableparticulars
pertainingtoanedition,includingthetitle,numberofvolumes,numberoftheedition,placeand
yearofpublication,andnamesofpublisherandprinteraregiven.Thesizesofthepublishedwork,
thenumberofpagespertainingtoeveryvolumeaswellasthescriptofthetranslationare
mentionedundereveryentrywiththesourcesofreference.

Occasionally,thereareadditionalremarksaboutthenatureofthework,andthebackgroundof
thetranslator,Translationswhoseauthorsareunknownaswellasthoseundertakenbyteamsof
scholarsarementionedunderentriesmarked"Anonymous"andplacedattheendofthelist
pertainingtoagivenlanguage.Whereasthegeneralrulefollowedistolistthenamesofthe
translatorsaccordingtotheirlastorfamilynames,therulefollowedelsewhere,suchasinthe
caseofUrdu,istolistthemintheorderofthefirstname.

AccordinglyShahWaliAllah'snameappearsunder"QutbalDinAhmadb.'AbdalRahim"(p.356
464),AnothersimilarinstanceisthatofHusaynwa'izKashifi,mentionedunder"KamalalDin,"
Admittedly,itisdifficulttofollowageneralrulewhenlistingnamesofMuslimauthors,especially
thenamesofthosebelongingtotheIndiansubcontinentwhichoftendonotfollowafixed
pattern,butitseemsbesttolistfamousauthorsbythenamesbywhichtheyarewellknown.

Asmostofthebibliographicaldetailsweregleanedfromthesourcesandtheauthorsdidnothave
directaccesstomostoftheworks,someerrorsindeterminingtheexactnatureandcontentof
someworksandtheirascriptiontoauthorsandtranslatorswereinevitable.Forinstance,a
translationinEsperantobyItaloChiussiismentionedamongSpanishtranslations(alsomentioned
underEsperanto).

Thisisparticularlytrueoflanguagesinwhichthereisalargenumberofworks,suchasUrduand

Persian.Duetoproblemsofaccesssomeoftheinformationgivenisincorrect.Forinstance,Abu
alFathalJurjani'sTafsireShahi(p.344)isnotatranslationoftheQur'anbutaworkonayatal
ahkaminPersian.TheFathal'Aziz,orTafsire.Azizi(apparentlyanincompletecommentaryby
Shah'Abdal'AzizinPersian,whoseUrdutranslationisknownasBustanaltafasir)isascribedto
ShahRafi'alDin.

TheIRCICAplanstoupdateandrevisethisvaluablebibliographyeverytenyearsifconditions
permit.AspromisedbyProf.Ihsanoglu,theDirectorGeneralofthelRCICA,inhispreface,the
projectinitsnextstagewillcovertranslationsinmanuscriptformaswellasoraltranslations.The
listoftranslationsgivenhere,exceptforthoseinUrdu,isbasedmainlyonthisbibliography.

ThelistofUrdutranslationsisbasedmainlyonthebibliographyofUrdutranslationsbyDr.Ahmad
Khan,whichismoreuptodate.Ithas1011entriesofeditionsofcompleteandpartial
translations,ofwhich442pertaintocompleteand569topartialworks.Ofthese,accordingtothe
author'sestimate,thereareabout164completetranslations.

Chapter2:EarliestTranslationsinDifferentLanguages

BasedonMuhammadHamidullah'sstudy,ProfIhsanoglu,inhisintroductiontotheIRCICA
bibliography,givesthefollowingdetailsaboutthefirsttranslationsoftheQur'anindifferent
languages,beginningwiththoseofAsia.

Persian:Thefirsttranslation,ateameffort,wasthatofalTabari'sTafsirdoneintheperiodofthe
SamanidkingAbuSalihMansuribnNuh(348364/961976).ThefirstprintedPersiancommentary
wasMawabe'AliyyahorTafsireHusayni(Calcutta1837).


Turkish:AccordingtooneopinionaTurkishversionofalTabari'sTafsirwasprepared
simultaneouslywiththePersianversionofit.AccordingtoanotheropiniontheTurkishversion
waspreparedahundredyearslaterinthe5th/llthcentury.Noneoftheseis,however,extant.The
firstTurkishtranslationtobepublishedwastheTafsiralTibyiin(Cairo1842).

Urdu:ThefirstcompletetranslationinUrduiscommonlyconsideredtobemadebyShahRaftal
Dinin1190/1776.ItsfirsteditionwaspublishedinCalcuttain1840.Itwasfollowedbythe
translationofShah'AbdalQadirin1205/1790anditsfirsteditionwaspublishedinDelhiin1829.
BothweresonsofShahWaliAllah.ThereisanoldtranslationinDeccaniUrdudoneinthe

Accordingtooneopinionitwasthetranslationofthe30thJuz'byGhulamAkbar'AliofMirzapur

Kashmiri:ThefirstpartialtranslationwasbyMuhammadYahyaShah,publishedin1887.

Hindi:Reportedly,thefirst"Hindi"translationwasdoneasearlyas2701883byanscholarfrom
Iraqdeputedby'AbdAllahibn'Umar,therulerofSindh,attherequestofRajaMahrookofPunjab
andKashmir.ThetranslationdidnotgobeyondSuratYaSin.Inviewofthefactthattheword
"Hindi"isunderstoodinthesenseof"Indian"bymanyWestAsians,thetranslationmighthave
beeninsomeIndianlanguageofthetime(seethefollowingpara).Thefirstfulltranslationin
modernHindiwasdonebyDr.AhmadShahMasi.hi,aChristianpriest(publishedin1915).

Sindhi:AccordingtoSindhitraditionthefirsttranslationwasmadebyin270/883byanArab
scholar.Thisonemightbethesameastheonementionedabove.ThefirstextantSindhi
translationwasdonebyAkhund'AzazAllahMutta'lawi(11601240117471824)andfirst
publishedinGujratin1870.ThefirsttoappearinprintwasbyMuhammadSiddlq(Lahore1867).

Tamil:ThefirstpartialtranslationwasbyMustafa'AlimHajiyarandNuh'AlimSahiband
publishedinBombayin1873.ThefirstcompletetranslationwasmadebyHablbMuhammadal
Qahirl(Bombay1883).

Pashto:TheearliestknowncommentaryinPashtowasbyMawlanaMurad'Ali,completedin
1284/1867andpublishedinLahorein1906.Thereisreportedlyanearliercompletetranslationin
