Dear Family,
Your child is learning about addition. In this topic, he or she will learn parts
of numbers through 10 and how to write an addition sentence. These are
important foundational skills that will allow your child to communicate
mathematical ideas and reasoning. It will also allow him or her to analyze the
information given in word problems and find solutions.

The picture shows 3 and 5.

Two addition sentences you can write are:
3 1 5 5 8 and 5 1 3 5 8.
Writing Addition Sentences
Materials 10 small objects, paper and pencil
Use 10 buttons or crayons. Take 6 objects and divide them into 2 groups.
Have your child write 2 addition sentences for the objects. Then allow your
child to divide the objects into 2 different groups. Write 2 addition sentences
for the objects and have your child help you decide if they are correct.
Repeatthe activity with 5 and 10 objects.

Observe Your Child

Focus on Mathematical Practice 5:
Use appropriate tools strategically.
Help your child become proficient with Mathematical Practice 5. After you and
your child decide whether the number sentences are correct, ask him or her to
explain how the objects illustrate the number sentences.
