Plan for: Equivalent Fractions 5-4 EDM

Day 1- Introduction and Practice

Warm up: Students will enter the classroom and use SumDog until they
hear the timer (roughly 7 minutes). On this website students will be
practicing skills at their independent learning level.
Transition: When the timer sounds students will put their devices
away and get their math things. Thank you for doing that so quickly.
Whole group: Today we are going to learn how to make these fractions
equivalent.
Does anyone know what equivalent fractions are? (think-pair-share)

Vocabulary- Equivalent fractions: two or more fractions that represent
the same amount.

Use the virtual fraction strips from Symbaloo. Show the fraction strip
1/2 . Lets start with a fraction that we all know well. What are some
other fractions that we could make to represent the same amount of ?
I will show you one I am thinking about and then we will do some
together. I am thinking that 2/4 is the same as . Now I am going to
prove that by placing and on top of the fraction strip. Do these
fractions represent the same amount? How do we know?

Answer: Because the fraction strips are the same picture so we know
that even though they are cut differently, they are actually representing
the same amount.

Lets do one together. What is another equivalent fraction for ? Please
come show me on the board. Please explain your answer.
Are there anymore? Please come show me.

We have been using the multiplication rule to make equivalent fractions.
Demonstrate the rule. Multiplying the fraction by one whole.

There is another rule as well. The division rule, we use this when
simplifying or reducing a fraction. Everyone say simplifying or reducing
a fraction.

Open your devices, go to the Symbaloo and open up the fraction strips.
Practice reducing fractions with the fraction strips and also do the math
to go with the fraction strip representations on the board.

Students will then practice making equivalent fractions with the fraction
strips and write them down.
Complete Math Journal pages 134-135.

Day 2- Centers Round 1

Warm up: Students will enter the classroom and use SumDog until they
hear the timer go off. (roughly 7 minutes) On this website students will
be practicing skills at their independent learning level.
Transition: When the timer sounds students will put their devices
away and get their math things. Thank you for doing that so quickly.

Students will rotate twice during centers.
List of centers for the week:
Me (teacher table): Students will go over pages 134-135. Extend skills
by doing whiteboard practice based on gaps of knowledge. Teach
alternative strategy for simplifying.
All by yourself (independent practice): Students will work on leveled
practice here. There are 3 tiered worksheets in the folder. Each sheet
will have the name of the students on them already. There are 3
students that will need separate practice sheets from these based on
their independent learning level.
Technology: All of the pink tiles on Sumbaloo focus on fractions, so
students can use any of these. Center sheet item: Record 3 sets of
equivalent fractions on your center sheet.
Hands-on: Students will explore fraction pies. There is a sheet at
hands-on center with different fractions listed that they need to make
equivalent fractions for. Here students can choose which level they
would like to work at based on the fraction they choose. Center sheet:
record you equivalent fractions on the center sheet.

Day 3- Whole Class and Practice

Warm up: Students will enter the classroom and use SumDog until they
hear the timer go off. (roughly 7 minutes) On this website students will
be practicing skills at their independent learning level.
Transition: When the timer sounds students will put their devices
away and get their math things. Thank you for doing that so quickly.

Lets review the strategies that we have been using this week. Write 2/4
on the board. Lets go over the 3 ways we know how to create an
equivalent fraction to 2/4.

This is a day to review the things that students were struggling with at
teacher table and for them to ask questions.
Have students solve several problems whole class.
Have students work on groups to complete practice page.

Midweek Socrative exit ticket.

Day 4- Centers Round 2
Warm up: Students will enter the classroom and use SumDog until they
hear the timer (roughly 7 minutes). On this website students will be

away and get their math things. Thank you for doing that so quickly.

Day 5- Engage the skill: Equivalent Fractions Bingo
Warm up: Students will enter the classroom and the classroom and
grab an equivalent fractions bingo sheet. They will choose the fractions
they want to use on their bingo board. Next, students will simplify all of
the equivalent fractions on their board so they can think quickly during
the game. If they finish early they can utilize sumdog until the rest of
the students are finished. Teacher should circulate the room and assist
students who need help.

Activity: Today we are going to use the bingo boards you created to
practice using our new skill of making equivalent fractions. Before we
start the game I want to review the 3 ways we learned to make
equivalent fractions.

Ask 3 different students to come and demonstrate one of the skills on
the board.

It doesnt matter which way you use because we learned all of these
strategies so that everyone could find something they feel confident
using.

Review the rules of bingo. As the game is played write the equivalent
fractions that have been called on a list on the board. Each time a new
fraction is called ask different students to give an equivalent fraction
that they covered on their sheet. Repeat game until there is 10 minutes
left in class.

Give final Socrative exit ticket.
