Q2) How does

your media
product represent
particular social
groups?

Gender Representation
My initial idea was to create a mysterious character that was portrayed to be a strong

individual yet undermined by a sense of vulnerability. I based by character upon the

character Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie). The character is intended to suggest rebellion. The
main gender represented in my film opening is female.

I decided to have a female protagonist in my film to reject stereotypical conventions of

thriller films. The female character is shown to be a strong individual that is skilful and
sophisticated. Although the character is deemed to be an assassin she still exhibits
feminine characteristics such as her long blonde hair and the red lipstick. The contrast
between the dangerous side and the vulnerability of the character helped to create an
alternative representation of women. To suppose this my film rejected the ideas of Propps
character theory as the women wasn't a princess character. Having a female protagonist
also influences the audience as it would attract- male gaze and females.

My film also confirms stereotype of men being powerful, this is seen as the antagonist

group and leader are all male. They are portrayed to be the villain also displaying that
males are more devious and evil than women are.

Age Representation
The target audience for this film were 16-25 years old making up 24% of the Uks cinema

audience- a particularly young age group.

To appeal to the audience needs I decided to use a young character. The protagonist is seen to

be 19 in the film established by the timeline shots displaying a change in age as well as time.
By having a early adult character allowed room for mature ideas (such as violence) and also to
promote the theme of rebellion to a young audience.

The production supports idea that young people have tough lives and are relatively strong- we

can see this as the protagonist with stands various disasters such as the death of her family
(newspaper articles shot). There is also suggestions of loneliness/isolation as the protagonist
is always seen alone and has no family.

The protagonist is shown to be skilled as she can use a gun, code and research. This

challenges stereotypes of young people being immature and dumb as my protagonist is shown
to be intelligent.

The closeness in age between audience and character helps the audience relate to the idea

and themes in the film.

Stereotypes
My production was thematic to the idea of spies and assassins. In the

opening my protagonist was representing a trained assassin. To conform to

stereotypes I used various props/costume and setting to connote the identity
of the character.

To do so my character dressed in full black smart-casual clothing and carried

a pistol gun in most shots to suggest her profession/importance. As well as

this I chose an isolated, dark woodland setting that connoted an eerie
atmosphere that also signified danger.

Social Class
The target audience for this film would be middle class, NCS grades B&C. In

terms of social economic-class my protagonist and the location would be

related with middle class, the character is young and not mature yet to
portray a high social class. Her clothing is also edgy signifying a roughness
and youth.

In terms of location, a woods is less profound than some up market locations

we usually see in action-thrillers such as James bond-who always goes to

luxury destinations. This also reflects a middle class status.

The theme of the film is action-thriller usually enjoyed by many people

however due to the lack of sophistication you would get in a Bond film it
attracts a younger less professional audience.

Summary
Overall my film represents social groups such as:
Teenagers/ young adults
Females
White British middle class

To conform with action-thriller conventions I used residual ideologies such as white British
character as they are usually connected with high profession and MI9/ British intelligence.
However I chose a female young protagonist to reject conventional ideas/stereotypes to create
a modern and artistic film that young people in the 21 st century would relate with and enjoy
watching.
My use of representation reinforces ideas that are current in society- the empowerment of
women, skills of the next generation and modern stereotypes are reflected throughout my
use of character and mise-en-scene.
In terms of psychographics my film would appeal to reformers and explorers.
