Abstract
Eastvillageisacommunitythatisinastageofdevelopment,thathasgreatpotentialandthat
certainlycouldbetheidealplacetolive.WeCivice3Highseniors,beingpartofthecommunity
wewanttocontributetoapositivedevelopment.Inordertodothat,wecreatedanddistributeda
surveytosomeresidentsofthisarea,bringingtogether364outof13,000peoplelivinginEast
VillagewiththehelpoftheEastVillageResidentsGroup.Thepurposeofthissurveyisto
understandtheresidentsperspectiveandperceptionoftheirplaceofliving,expandingourview
oftheneedsthatthecommunityhas,toknowandunderstandbetterpeoplesopinionregarding
thehomelessonthisarea.Aftercollectingourdata,itwasconcludedthatresidentsofEast
Villageundoubtedlyperceivethehomelessasabigprobleminthecommunity.InAdditionto
this,thecommunitydoesnotperceivethatthecityismakinganefforttoreducetheproblem.

Introduction

TheEastVillageisacommunityindowntownthatisDowntownSanDiegoslargest
neighborhoodencompassing130blocks,andburstintolifewithnewbuildings,businesses,night
anddaylifeplacesinthepasttwoyears.
Theseniorclassate3CivicHighhasbeendevelopingplansforbusinessesandservicesthatwill
positivelyimpactthecommunitybecausewearetargetingsomenecessitiesthatthecommunity
has.
WedesignedthesurveytogettoknowEastVillageresidentsopinionaboutourcommunityand
haveawiderperspectiveofwhatconcernthemabouttheirplaceofliving,howcanweimprove
theirlivingconditionsandhowtomakeEastVillageabettercommunity.

MyteamandIarefocusedonthehomelesspopulationofthisareainDowntown.Accordingto
statisticsofDowntownSanDiegoPartnershipMonthlyHomelessCount,theamountof
homelesspeoplelivinginEastVillagein2015wasinaverage457.Inordertohelpdiminishthe
problem,wewanttoeducatethehomelesspopulationprovidingthembasiceducationandjob
training,whileofferingthemhousingtoo.Wewanttohelpthisindividual'sstopsurvivingand
startliving.

DataCollectionMethods
Thedatathatwecollectedfromthedesignatedsurvey,wasdistributedtoresidentsbytheEast
VillageResidentsGroup,whoemailedthesurveytoeveryoneontheirmailingcontactlist.In
additiontothis,thesurveylinkwasalsopostedonsocialmedia,aswellastheDowntown
Newspaper.ItisnecessarytoconsiderthattheEastVillagehasapopulationofabout13,000
residentsandoursurveysamplesizewas364people,whichgivesourdataabouta7%errorrate.
OurclasscollectedandanalyzedsurveyresultsbyusingGooglesheets,doingcalculationsby
choosingthequestionsrelatedtotheirdesignatedproject.Inthisparticularcase,wearefocused
onpeoplesopinionofhomelessness.

Results

surveyresponsestothestatementI
feelsafelivingintheEastVillage.
Participantsansweredaccordingtoa
15scalewhethertheyagreeordisagree
withthestatement.1meaningstrongly
disagreeand5stronglyagree.The
meanofthedatasetis3withastandard
deviationof1.15,whichmeansthe
majorityofresponseswerebetween2and4.Thesurveyresultsalsoshowthat29.10%stated
theyfeelneutralaboutthisstatement,11.50%ofpeopleagreethattheyfeelsafelivinginthe
EastVillage,and9.30%disagreed.

However,26.70%oftheparticipants
answeredthattheystronglyagreewiththestatementandonly9.90%ofthemdisagreed.

However,4.30%ofthemagreewiththestatement.

Conclusion
Throughcloseanalysisofthesurveyquestionspresentedbefore,wecangainanunderstanding
ofresidenceperspectiveofthehomelesspopulationintheEastVillage.FigureAshowsthat
overall,peoplefeelneutralorindifferentaboutsafetylivingintheEastVillage,whichcould
meanthattheydontfeeltotallysafe,buttheydontfeelthreatenedorindangertoo,soitcanbe
inferredthatsafetyinEastVillageismanagedcorrectly,butitcanbeimproved.InfigureB,the
overallanalysisconcludesthatmostoftheresidentsconsiderhomelessnessintheEastVillagea
problem.Itisclearthatcommunityperceivesthisissueinthestreets,inthetrolleystations
around,outsidethepubliclibrary,etc.InfigureC,wecanconcludethatmostofthesurvey
participantsdontoftenseepeoplehelpingthehomelessintheEastVillage.Moreresearch
shouldbedoneinthiscasebecauseitcannotbeprovedthattherearenopeoplehelpingthe
homeless,maybetherearehelpingthembuttheresidentsareindifferentaboutthefactorthey
arenotabletoperceivethem.InfigureD,theresultsprovethatmostviewthehomelessasa
threat,whichmeansthattheyarenotcomfortablewiththeirpresenceinthestreets.Areason
whypeoplefeelthiswaytowardsthehomelesspeoplemaybethatsomeofthemtrytointeract
oraskforhelpinthestreets.Lastbutnotleast,theoverallofFigureEshowsthatmostofthe
peopledisagreethatcityistakingnecessarymeasurestoaidthehomeless.Sowecansaythat
thecommunitywouldliketoseemoreeffortfromthecitytodiminishthehomelessproblemin
EastVillage.Overall,Eastvillageisanewlygentrifiedarea,andresidentslivingherefindahigh
volumeofhomelesspeoplewhenevertheygoouttothestreets.Thesurveyshowsthatthey
perceivethemasaproblemintheircommunity,andtheydontperceivethecityseffortsto
contributetothisissue.
