This tests aim was to show how toxic an ecosystem is by measuring how the

bioluminescence generated from Aliivibrio fischeri bacteria is affected by the presence

of chemical substances in an environment.
The measurement can be applied to groundwater, surface water, marine water, liquid
phases, solid phases and other ecosystems as well. Its important to say that this test is a
single species test, so it wont give the entire information about the ecosystem if it
involve more species
By using a cell suspension, grow solutions and serial dilutions, we were measuring
the intensity of luminescence with different metal concentrations. This way we can
evaluate how the chemicals affect the luminescence, implying in how toxic the solution
is.
The initial data was:

Analyzing the results its possible to conclude that the Titanium Dioxide is more
toxic than Cu, to these bacteria. It is explained by the fact that with 0,05 ppm of TiO2
the luminescence was more affected than with 120 ppm of Cu.
It can be conclude too that the bacteria has a certain limit of tolerance to these
substances. After 200 ppm of Cu, the luminescence dropped exponentially. The same
effect was observed after 0,5 ppm of Titanium dioxide. The diagram stops its linear
behavior and gets an exponential behavior. It was observed too that you need to add a
certain amount of concentration to the start the prejudicial effect.
