How to use this booklet

You will need to complete every page of this booklet, and all sections / questions
required.
Assessment criteria for Distinction grade;
LO2
Plans will show a full consideration of movement and continuity, perspective, point of view,
transitions and special effects.
Precise and workable planning of timing and synchronisation to a soundtrack will be
produced. It will be clear at this stage, from the documentation, what the finished piece will
look and sound like.
Learners will follow industry conventions and terminology used in storyboard production
correctly.
Plans for the construction of models, sets and props will be realistic and clear.
Drawings, script and storyboard will all show a creative interpretation of the idea.
LO3:
The documentation linked to the production will be full and detailed and there will be
evidence that the production management and scheduling of the project has been effective
and carried out in a professional manner. The techniques used in the production of the work
are likely to be related to an understanding of current trends in the industry.

Both LO2 and LO3

In all practical activity learners will be capable of working autonomously and effectively. They
will work on their own initiative, will not need constant support or supervision, will give the
work their full commitment, work positively and cooperatively with others, and meet
deadlines. In other words, they will have the kind of self-management skills that would be
expected of them in a professional context. Note also that this criterion should not be taken
to mean that learners do not seek advice or that they work without discussing things with
their tutor, but rather that they are not dependent upon the support of others and that when
they take advice they weigh it carefully for themselves.

Planning
Brainstorm / mind map (add extra pages if necessary)

Attach a 400 word treatment of your idea

My stop motion production is of a TV advert promoting Hellmans Mayonnaise.
The entire production will be set in a kitchen backdrop/set in the daytime. The
narrative involves a story of a chicken mayonnaise sandwich being made. In
order to stick to the guidelines of the brief I must use the song: Chinese New Year
by the band SALES. The story starts off with a loaf of bread unwrapping itself,
and a slice of bread leaves the rest of the bread slices and slides onto a plate.
Next, a leg of chicken slides out of a paper wrapper and slides onto the plate. A
knife cuts the leg into pieces. These pieces then also slide onto the plate one by
one. Another slice of bread begins to slide onto the plate to complete the
sandwich, but suddenly a bottle of Hellman's mayonnaise bursts through the
kitchen cupboard door and lands onto the loaf of bread next to the sandwich.
After getting up and moving around the sandwich, the mayonnaise glides into
the air and the mayonnaise squeezes onto the sandwich. The slice of the bread
then slides back onto the plate now making the sandwich complete. With the use
of a video transition, the Hellman's logo appears on the screen with a voice over
stating: "Hellman's, bring out the best".
My target audience is for all ages and both genders. However, not everyone
purchases Hellmans mayonnaise despite it being a well-known and used product
in a lot of households. But due to it being a branded, its more expensive than
other brands of mayonnaise so the advert will be aimed at middle class families
who can afford the more expensive version of mayonnaise.
I should make the advert as I already have experience with the video software
such as Adobe Premier Pro. Furthermore, I have already created shorter stop
motion animations using food and drink. I have knowledge on how to create a
stop motion production and I have already use my creative skills to create other
productions.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

How will you meet the requirements of your brief?

I will make sure my production is no longer than 30 seconds no shorter than 20

seconds.

I will make sure that my production is in the format of a TV advert and will help
promote my chosen product.

I will make sure I include the logo of my chosen product within the TV advert.

I will make sure I use the song: Chinese New Year by SALES in my TV advert.

I will make sure I complete my TV advert by the 11th March 2016.

Risk assessment: Are there any health and safety issues you may encounter?
Due to my advert being filmed in a kitchen/ kitchen environment, I will have to makes sure I
consider the health and safety issues I may encounter. This includes making sure all the
doors of cupboards and drawers are closed so no one walks into them. I will need to make
sure all the cutlery is put away especially when not being used.
As Im using a food product, I also need to make sure all of the food is in date because if
someone was to eat it, they could get seriously ill.

Discuss any legal issues you may face. Eg; sound, plagiarism, age restrictions
Due to the negotiation brief in which I must use the song: Chinese New Year by SALES, I
will need to make sure I contact the record label and ask for permission to use the song in
my TV advert so I dont face any copyright issues.
Furthermore, as I am advertising Hellmans Mayonnaise, I need to contact the company as I
havent been asked to produce an advert so I need to ask permission to promote the brand
so I dont face any copyright issues. I must make sure that I am not copying an already
existing advert as this could also be seen plagiarism and companies could take legal action
against me.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Use of possible formats

Circle which of the following formats your animation will take;
stop-frame techniques
time lapse photography
plasticine animation
Claymation
using found objects
modelling
puppetry
combined formats

Why are you using that particular format?

My brief states that I must produce a TV advert using a product of my choice, so I would
need to show off the product as how it is normally seen. So I would need to use the
modelling format in order to actually use the Hellmans mayonnaise as a model. Also, as I
am producing a stop motion animation, I would need to use stop-frame techniques.

What are the different possibilities you could explore using this format?
As I am using a mayonnaise jar, it is a small, light and compactible product that can be easily
moved 360 degrees and can be moved anywhere I want it to be moved.

What are the limitations of using this format? (i.e what problems/ obstacles might you
have?)
As I am using food products, I only have a limited amount of time to produce my advert.
Furthermore, my materials dont bend so they may not appear to have any human
characteristics or qualities.

What imaginative or inventive animations have you seen which use this format?
Add in links and screen shots of three examples of animations using this format.

Subject
What will the subject of your animation be?
My subject is on my mayonnaise TV advert.

Storyline
Describe the storyline of your animation. What events will happen to your characters?

The advert initially starts off with the song: Chinese New Year by SALES at the
beginning. The loaf of bread unwraps itself, and a slice of bread slides onto a
plate. A leg of chicken slides out of its wrapper and a knife cuts it into pieces.
Another slice of bread begins to slide onto the plate to complete the sandwich,
but suddenly the bottle of Hellman's mayonnaise bursts through the kitchen
cupboard door and lands onto the kitchen counter next to the sandwich. The
mayonnaise glides into the air and the mayonnaise squeezes onto the sandwich.
The slice of the bread then slides back onto the plate now making the sandwich
complete. With the use of a video transition, the Hellman's logo appears on the
screen with a voice over stating: "Hellman's, bring out the best".

Characters
What characters will be in your animation?
There arent any characters within my animation as I will be using food products.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Movement of characters

How are you going to make your characters move?

I will make the mayonnaise jar and packet of chicken move using string and by hand.
Hamish will move by himself.

What is the purpose of an armature?

Armatures are composed of bendable wire and whatever material the creator wants to use is
placed over the wire. For example, Aardman Animators Chicken Run characters were made
out of armatures from wire and clay. Armatures are used because they can bend and are
made of flexible materials which can make the characters appear to be more realistic and
convincing when moved.

Will you use them for your characters?

I will not be using armatures for my characters as I will be promoting a food product, so it
would be unnecessary to use armatures.

Audio and Soundtrack

What audio will you have for your animation?

Complete the sound list, detailing what sounds you will use, where you will source them,
what equipment you will need to record them and when you will use them in your animation.
You will need to design your own soundtrack. You cannot use copyrighted music, and it must
be more than simply adding a track.

What actions will need sound effects?

Think of the scenes in your animation. Each scene should have different sounds/music to
give information about the mood / emotions of the characters.

Audience
Define the following characteristics of your audience;
Gender: Female

Age: 30 - 40

Interests
Reading magazines, cooking, cleaning, watching films, swimming, wine tasting, gardening,
yoga, online games.

What forms of animation might they already watch?

Childrens TV shows and films. This could include animation productions created by
Aardman Animations including Chicken Run, Flushed Away and anything from the Wallace
and Gromit franchise.

What images do you think they enjoy watching?

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

What might they consider distasteful or offensive?

Vulgar language, anything too inappropriate for children as well as anything that could seem
sexist. As I am showing meat on national TV, I also need to think about those who dont eat
meat this could include vegetarians/ vegans and for certain religions who dont believe in
eating meat. I need to make sure that advert doesnt portray meat in a negative way as this
could offend viewers.

How will you ensure that your animation will suit your chosen audience?
I will not include any vulgar or prude language or any scenes containing sex or violence. I
will create a TV advert that will revolve around a romance but with a humorous and
entertaining twist.

How will they physically watch your animation? (i.e in an exhibition format, on screen,
projection, online?)
The advert will be broadcasted on TV as the brief states.

Lighting Design

Where will you be photographing your animation?

In a kitchen area.

Does it have natural daylight?

Yes are there several windows in the room.

If so, you will need to block this out. Explain why.

This could affect the overall visuals of my stop motion, it could make it too bright or too dark.

Do you have a constant light source(s) such as a lamp?

There are several electrical light sources that could be used for the lighting design.

Where will you place your light source(s) to create interesting effects?

Above my set, so its looking down on the models.

Dope sheets
A dope sheet is an animation tool which helps a animator organise the animation shot-byshot.
This gives the camera operator instructions on each shot type and how many frames this will
be used for.
A dope sheet is usually split into 5 different sections.

To indicate what action occurs on which frame number

To see what action is happening in this shot.
To see what dialogue used in this scene.
To show what level of animation is happening.
To give camera instructions (angle).

For example;

Because you will be working with video, you will be using 30fps. You will need to complete a
dope sheet for EVERY SECOND of your animation.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

i.e, if you make a 30 second animation, you will need to complete 30 dope sheets.
This will be a time-consuming task, but it will help you understand what will need to
happen in each of the shots you take. The higher marks will come from a detailed and
careful collection of dope sheets. For example, if your characters speaks, you will need to
show the mouth forming every shape in order to look effective.
