Poverty Documentary - Narrative Script

Background Information about Kalimantan (Pontianak,

Singkawang, and Monterado)
Scenes showing sceneries of Kalimantan, Pontianak and Monterado with

Pontianak is the capital city of the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan.
It is considered as a very large trade port city in Borneo. The city is called
Kota Khatulistiwa since it is located exactly on the equator line. Pontianak
has a size of 107.82 square kilometers and there are about 573, 751 people
living in Pontianak.
Singkawang, which can also be known as San Keuw Jong, is a city in West
Kalimantan that is located 145 kilometers from the capital city of Kalimantan,
Pontianak. It covers an area of 504 square kilometers and has a population of
192,844 people. Singkawang/San Keuw Jong is from Hakka Chinese, which
means a town in hills nearby a sea and estuary.
Monterado is sub-district found in West Kalimantan. It is a rural area and it is
located close to Singkawang. In the past, the Chinese used to occupy this
place to exploit gold deposits in this area by creating partnerships with the
local people. The main focus of this documentary video is more to this area
because most of our activities, such as interviews and surveys, were done
there.

Poverty in Kalimantan (Pontianak and Monterado)

Rate of Poverty (Income Poverty and Nutritional
Health) in Kalimantan
We conducted a survey in a school in Pontianak and Monterado to find
out the rate of poverty in both areas. We asked them regarding the food
that they ate in the last two days and from that information we calculated
the average amount of fats, calories and protein that the students
consume per day.
Show Table 1: The average consumption of calories, fats and protein

This table shows that the students of SMP Immanuel in Pontianak

consume much more fats compared to the students of SMPN 1 Monterado.
However, the amount of calories and protein that are consumed are
similar.

recommended amounts in a bar graph.

When we compared the results from both schools to the recommended

amount of calories, fats and protein, we found out that students from both
schools lack calories and proteins in their diet. Even so, the students of
SMP Immanuel consumes about 6 more grams of fat than the
recommended amounts while the students SMPN 1 consumes about 40
less grams of fat than the recommended amount.
Activities that the Local Government is doing to Reduce
Income Poverty and Improve Public Health
The central government of Indonesia creates several programs to
reduce poverty in Indonesia. The local government of Monterado subdistrict is in charge of enforcing these programs. We interviewed the head
of a village in Monterado and also the head of a health centre to find out
more information regarding this.

The head of the village states that the programs that are applied in the
Monterado area are program keluarga harapan, program beras untuk
rakyat miskin, program bantuan siswa sekolah, program nasional
pemberdayaan masyarakat generasi sehat dan cerdas, program kredit
usaha bersama and program jaminan kesehatan masyarakat/BPJS. He
mentions that these programs are made to help poor families in that area
so that they are able to afford healthcare, education and also meet their
daily needs.
Analysis - How Those Activities affect the Poverty and Public
Health in the Region ()
Various clips of Pontianak, Singkawang and Monterado sceneries are
shown while Analysis voiceover is playing
Based on the results of the survey we conducted in SMP Immanuel in
Pontianak and SMPN 1 Monterado in Monterado, we conclude that the

students from both schools do not control their diet well. There are several
factors that might cause this.
The students from Pontianak might experience this because they do not
really care about their intake of calories, protein and fats because usually
they just eat whatever they like. This is so because the students from
Pontianak are mainly people of the middle-class, due to the fact that they
have good living conditions. Pontianak is one of the major economic
centres in Kalimantan as it is a trade port city so this means that the
people that live in there will be moderately rich. This means that those
students are able to eat any food that they desire because they have
enough money to afford it.
However the circumstances of the people in Monterado are completely
different. The people of Monterado are less fortunate compared to the
people that live in Pontianak because Monterado is more of a rural area
while Pontianak is an urban area. This is also supported by the fact that
the people of Monterado have living conditions that are not of high
quality, such as how they do not have access to clean water and their
electricity turns off at some times. The presence of the programs of BSM,
RASKIN and JAMKESDA also indicate that Monterado is an area filled with
poor people. Another reason might be because the people of Monterado
does not have that much knowledge regarding nutritional values. They
also do not have that much money and this is the reason why they only
consume food that they can afford to buy. This could be the cause to the
fact that the students of Monterado consume less calories, fats and
protein than the recommended amounts because they just eat whatever
they have.
The lack of the consumption of calories, fats and proteins may be
dangerous to the health of these students, especially due to the fact that
they are still teens and they are still growing. They need the right amount
of nutrients to have enough energy and to stay healthy or fit. If they are
not physically fit, they will be vulnerable to sickness.
There are various reasons why the people of Monterado have to live in
poverty. One of them might be because the local government of the subdistrict does not apply the programs that are made by the central
government effectively. This is due to the fact that based on our
interviews, not all of the people receive help from the government
programs. An example of such a situation is that we met an adult that did
not receive help from the health care program, which was BPJS. Another
reason is that the programs that the government makes might not be
actually helpful to the people. An example is the RASKIN program. That
program is made to provide rice for poor families so that they are able to
buy other food commodities. In reality, it is not very beneficial because it
turns out that they still consume low amounts of calories, fats and
proteins based on our survey results. This might be due to the fact that
they rarely receive the rice, based on our interview, and maybe the

amount of rice that they receive is not able to support their whole family.
Other than that, the population of Monterado could be the ones that are
ignoring the presence of these government programs. If they do not apply
to these programs, they will receive less assistance from the government,
thus making their lives more difficult. This is because they will need to
support their families with their own money, which is not that much as
they are poor people, and they will need to use this money to buy
groceries, afford health care and also afford education. If this is so, they
will not be able to provide enough food for their family thus causing their
nutritional health to decrease. They would lack the calories, fats, proteins
and other nutrients that they need in their diet.

Response as a Christ Believer

Various clips of our trip
Through this documentary video of poverty, we hope that the government
of Indonesia will continue to eradicate poverty by creating more programs
and also applying it effectively. We also hope that the lives of the poor people
in West Kalimantan will become better by actively participating in the
governments programs.
Gods Command Concerning the Poor (Proverbs 31:8-9)
Show the Bible Verse in the video
I can relate what I learned to the Bible Verse Proverbs 31:8-9, which says
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all
who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor
and needy.
This verse tells us that even though we may live wonderful lives, we
need to remember that there are other people who are in need. God
wants us to support these people and show our kindness to them. Even
though they are poor, we must treat them fairly instead of looking down
upon them. They are also created in Gods image and this is why we must
treat them like we treat anybody else.
