A. TITLE OF LESSON: Communities Volunteers

B. CONTEXT OF LESSON
During this lesson, students will learn about volunteers. Students will learn what a volunteer
is. Students will identify five things they can do to volunteer in our community.

E. ASSESSING LEARNING
I will assess students through observation and their participation in the activity. Each student
will complete a writing activity where they will identify 5 things they can do to volunteer in
their community. Each student will trace their hand and then write a volunteer act on each
finger. (Example: boy scouts, daily bread, hospital, etc.).
F. MATERIALS NEEDED

1. Smart Board
2. White computer paper (17)
3. Pencil
G. PROCEDURE
Prep:

Gather white computer paper for each student

Engage:
Introduce concept of Volunteer.
Write volunteer on board, but with missing letters to engage students.
Say definition: to offer, help or give without being asked or forced. You do not get paid.
Have students guess the word, volunteer.
Pass white computer paper out or get paper helper to
Implementation:
Tell students to trace their hand.
o Ask students, What does a hand have to do with Volunteers/Volunteering?
o Have you heard of the phrase, To give a helping hand? it means to help!
Have students name ways we can volunteer.
o Parent volunteers at school, boy scouts, girl scouts/brownies, daily bread, big
brothers big sisters, meals on wheels (people prepare food and deliver it to people
in need, some fire fighters volunteer in Forest my town I live in)
Write answers on smart board and have students write down 1 way they can volunteer in
the community on each finger, on the hand that they traced.
Students will write 5 ways to volunteer in the community.
Closure:
Tell the class, now they know how to volunteer! Tomorrow we will participate in a
volunteer activity.
H. WHAT COULD GO WRONG WITH THIS LESSON AND WHAT WILL YOU DO
ABOUT IT?

Students may not know what the word is, once I say the definition of volunteer.
o I could guide the students to the word by giving more hints. Example- Some parents
do this when they come help out at school.. they are called
Students may not seem to be engaged
o I will quickly engage students by asking them a question about volunteers.
Students may not know of any volunteers.
o I could guide students to thinking about volunteers in our community. I know some
of the students are boy scouts. I know some of the students have parents as
volunteers.
A students finger may be too small for the student to write in.
o The student can write next to the finger.
