Narrative
Reading is not a singular subject because built within reading is many different subjects,
topics, and opportunities. That is why I like the idea of the multi-genre text set. A multi-genre
text set is a set of books different in genre and story line, but they still have a similar topic. The
topic is what the teacher wants to focus on while letting the student explore the differences in
reading. The student is still learning what the teacher wants them to learned, but they have a
freedom to explore many genres or story lines. In a classroom, you want your students to have
the educational freedom they want, but you still need to have control over that learning. A multigenre text set allows that educational freedom for students and teachers.
The purpose of using the multi-genre text set is to teach a subject that will benefit the
students in a different way. This will allow your students to learn while reading and get them into
the habit of breaking down information in a new way. For example, my multi-genre text set is
over character. Instead of simply telling the students about character, they can read about it in
different perspectives, stories, and genres that interest them. Maintaining their interest is the key
to educational success. Therefore, when they read about the famous Big Bad Wolf who they have
heard so many stories about, they will connect. When they learn of his good manners, students
will realize that it is important to have manners no matter who you are because it shows your
respect towards others. That is the importance of a multi-genre text set; not only are they
breaking down information, but they are doing it in a way they can connect to. Overall, they are
learning your subject of interest, as well as improving their reading skills, increasing their
imagination, and building up their vocabulary. Students learning will grow in many ways with a
multi-genre text.

Meghan Tijerina

My multi-genre text set is about character, so I addressed the important traits to have like
respect, honesty, kindness, perseverance, bravery, and many more. I think this is extremely
important to teach students in any grade level. This subject is one that everyone will use outside
school, in the work place, and with activities. Character makes you who you are and students
need to know how important it is to build a good character. I recently just learned about
emotional intelligence and how important it is. There was a study that showed that business are
looking at employees with high intelligence because it makes a better, happier business. In order
to prepare students for the adult world, we need to build students with great character. It will not
only help students be prepared for the working world, but also in life. Relationships with family,
friends, and even strangers are important in life. In order to create a happy life, they need
healthy, happy relationships. Having great character can help students build that life. Schools are
there for students to learn and to teach our next generation. The next generation is important to
society, which is why my text set on character is important to schools. Im aiming for a happier,
brighter generation.
While creating this multi-genre text set Ive learned a lot about my subject. I also learned
how much you can break up a story and find a character building trait to teach one. Good
character is involved with everyday life and can be seen in a lot of stories. This was a great
experience that I think every subject should have a multi-genre text set from mathematics to
social studies.

Reflection
Having a continuous learning environment is very important as a teacher. Students often
get bored and miss the importance of a subject because of distractions. A multi-genre text set
allows students to get invested in a subject and learn much more than you would expect. I
learned about multi-genre text sets, using it in the classroom, and why it is important.
I was surprised how much you can learn with a multi-genre text set. I had character as my
subject. Learning how to build my text set taught me about qualities of books and my subject. I
came across some mediocre books that barely touched the surface of character building, but
coming across those helped me learn how to find the good books that I thought could benefit
students better. In the books, I found there are many different approaches you can teach children.
I found some biographies that teach children about how an average human was about to have
great qualities of character. I also found poems that taught being nice to people and the right way
to treat them. If poetry or biographies do not attract your students interest, then they can still
learn it from traditional literature, realistic fiction, or any other genres. Your student will learn
something no matter their taste in literature. Your structure of your multi-genre text set depends
on how you imagine it can be.
The great thing about a multi-genre text set is you can use it in any classroom; it does not
have to be just in a reading class. The character topic I chose for this multi-genre text set can be
used in a history class, math class, or even art class. Character is an important part of school and
students need it to succeed in the outside world. That is the great part about this text set. I want to
become a mathematics teacher, so I can use a multi-genre text set to help students learn more
about different mathematical areas. There are fun books that interact with you, there are factual

Meghan Tijerina
Read 3301 Purple
informational books, biographies, and you can even find books that link with other subjects like
science. There are endless opportunities with a multi-genre text set. The best part about this text
set is that you are showing the importance of literature to students.
A multi-genre text set is important to educators of any subject. There are many
opportunities for teachers involved in this text set that allows students to learn more. They do not
have to be stuck inside a textbook all day. The way a textbook is written and looks tends to scare
students. This gets rid of that fear and focus on the importance of learning. My students will
learn more about the subject I teach because I will give them that fearless path to learning. They
will gain important educational information, build their vocabulary, and gain much more
intellectually than I could give them without a multi-genre text set.
Students are children, and children with brains wanting to learn. It is better to make the
lessons fun if we can. It will benefit the students more in the long run. As a teacher, it is my
responsibility to encourage learning and help in any way I can. A multi-genre text set showed me
that you can make it fun, you can learn from it, and it is important.
