Social Justice Reflection

The field of occupational therapy has identified the importance of social justice as it
reflects in the professions Core Values. In addition, the occupational therapy program at Touro
University Nevada has also adopted social justice as an important aspect in the curriculum as a
fundamental principle through each assignment, project, and activities the students are involved
in. Specifically, the program encourages involvement within the community by providing social
justice opportunities each semester. In addition, an entire course is also dedicated to address
social justice through additional participation within the community and through research
opportunities.
The specific artifacts that I would like to highlight that I found to be most meaningful to
me and provided me with opportunities to advocate for those in need are my involvement with
the Clean the World Foundation, St. Jude Ranch for Children, and Toys 4 Smiles Foundation.
Specifically, for the Clean the World Foundation I had the honor to help assist with process of
recycling hygiene products that would then be delivered to thousands of people all over the
world to help reduce illnesses and improve health and hygiene. Through the Toys 4 Smiles
Foundation, I had the opportunity to help make wooden toy cars for children which would be
distributed to children all over Nevada in order to provide joy and excitement with play tools.
Lastly, through my volunteer experience at St. Jude Ranch for Children, I was able to provide my
assistance with redecorating the vicinity in order to bring joy to children who have been
neglected, abandoned, or abused.
Through these specific social justice opportunities I have learned the value of community,
respect towards diversity, and most importantly have built new relationships with members of the
community. In addition to the artifacts highlighted, the social justice course taken in semester

five, has also increased my knowledge towards understanding and recognizing social
inequalities. Therefore, by getting involved in the community I can help provide advocacy and
opportunities that aim to help open the doors of access and opportunity to those in greatest needs.
In addition, as a future health practitioner I will be able to obtain a role where I can help clients
obtain access to health care benefits, ensure that they are treated respectfully, and provide
advocacy for unjust circumstances.
