Field Trip 10

Reflective Essay IDU
For all three quarters in grade 10, we discussed Human Rights in several subjects,
specifically in three subjects Individuals and Societies, Biblical Studies and English. At the
end of the third quarter, we went to Yogyakarta to observe four places; a disability
rehabilitation center, Inter- Faith community, Sukunan Sustainable Community and the
Bethesda Hospital for HIV/AIDS where we learned and understood human rights
applications in real life. Through my personal observation and listening testimonies of
socially marginalized people, my understanding of fairness and development has become
personal, deeper and inspired me to act in future.
In Indonesia, there are human rights violations happening everywhere. In Yogyakarta
disabled children are not allowed to get proper education which means that their human rights
are being violated. As I learned 30 human rights in Individual and Societies, it was basically
about laws stating humans have to be treated fairly. But fairness I learned from school was
rarely happening in societies. The testimonial from the teacher in disability center explained
clearly how the children there are going to be treated in society when they grow up. They are
not going to have jobs that are reliable and bad facilities while most people have what they
need. While I was listening to the teacher testimonial, I came up with question, Why people
and government discriminate disabilities in bad ways deprives their human rights, even
though they have learned that they should not take other peoples rights? I was scared that I
would be one of the people who will be discriminating and deprives disable peoples right.
Even though for the whole academic year I have basically learned about human

rights, I did not take it seriously, but now it is different. After listening to the testimonial of
the teacher, I started to think deep. I do not want myself to become one of the people who
make disable people live a hard life being compared and judged. The children in disability
center, their smiles inspired me to take actions. To make the disable people live a better live, I
am going to help. But because I am a student, I do not have many things to do for them, so I
am going to start with small things such as helping NGOs or other organizations. In Biblical
Studies, Jesus helped people who are sick, ill and disable, I am going to follow His actions
and show compassion to them.
The academic year for this year is basically about human rights and the end of the
quarter three we went to field trip to establish and know the human rights in real life
situation. The three subjects such as IS, Biblical Studies and English helped me to have basic
information, ideas and concept of human rights but it did not teach deep enough like field
trip. I have learned and felt thousand feelings and information from field trip that made me
wants to take actions for the ones who are not having their human rights.
