S6E4. Students will understand how the distribution of land and
oceans affects climate and weather.
S6E5. Students will investigate the scientific view of how the
earths surface is formed.

Safety Considerations
During the activity, students will be instructed not to run and/or
horseplay in the lab.
No food or drink near the computers.

Lesson Logistics/Materials:
In order to manage my classroom during this activity, I will remind
my students of the classroom rules we discussed at the beginning
of the school year. I will make sure that students are respectful
toward one another and receptive to the thoughts and opinions of

their classmates. Before completing the activity students will be

reminded of the lab safety rules outlined above.
Materials:
Laptop computer or computer lab access
Paper
Pencil/Pen
Game Board (1 for every 6 students)
Game Packet (includes directions, article, questions, and
game pieces)
During the warm up activities students will work in groups of
4-5 students. As we transition into the lecture portion of the
class students will listen and take notes individually. While
playing the game, students may work in groups of 6-7
students. At the end of class, students will complete their
exit ticket individually and turn it in before leaving class.
ENGAGE:
Students will be given a set of pictures and instructed to organize
the pictures based on whether or not the object emits CO2.
Students may work in groups for this warm-up activity. We will go
over the correct answers immediately after completion.

EXPLORE:
Students will play the carbon cycle game where they will travel
through the carbon cycle and answer questions. If I am not able to
get my students in the computer lab for this activity, I have
created game boards that students can play on in class. This
activity opens with a reading describing the carbon cycle and
places where it occurs. Students will then discuss in their groups
the components of the carbon cycle and the dangers of carbon.
During the game, students will be instructed to follow the

directions as listed on the website.

EXPLAIN:
Students will listen and take notes as the teacher guides the class
through a short power point activity. The power point includes
information on human impact on climate change and ways in
which scientists collect data on temperature. A short video is
embedded in the power point to further explain greenhouse
gases, climate change, and clean energy. The power point also
includes vocabulary that students should know for their
assessment.

EXTEND:
Students will be given a research project where they will have to
look at methods/sources of clean energy being used throughout
the world. Students will be given a choice to either work
individually or with a partner. Students may present their
information and/or findings in any way they choose (model,
poster, PowerPoint, essay, song, etc.) Students will be evaluated
based on how well they present their findings and ability to
answer questions based on their research.
EVALUATE:
Students will be assessed based on their ability to transfer their
knowledge and show an understanding of human impact on the
environment-more specifically on Earths climate. Before leaving
class students will be given an exit ticket asking What can you
do in your own life to limit your carbon emissions? and What is
a consequence of the increase in temperature on earth?
