(1) Story of Shiva and the Hunter
Once, thousand of people flocked to the Ganges bathing and
chanting Om Namaha Shivaya. Parvathi, consort of Lord Shiva
was observing this and to Her amazement, Shiva remained
unmoved. Angry she demanded of Him Why are you unmoved, so
heartless? Upon which Lord Shiva replied, O Devi these are not
true devotees, they have no faith. They are only taking my name with

their lips but they do not believe.Parvathi remained unconvinced,

so Shiva decided to put it to a test.
Assuming the form of a cripple old man and his wife, Lord Shiva
and Parvathi decended by the Ganges River.Parvathi began
lamenting O help me, my husband is sick . Help me take him to a
hospital. He is a Brahman and only a Brahman can touch him. But all
the people hurried away muttering excuses. I am busy. I am too
weak etc. Parvathi beseeching people to help her husband but no
one offered to help. Feeling sorry, the hunter told her to wait. He
stripped and took a dip in the Ganges River then approached her.
oh Mother I am now fit to help you. Lord Shiva and Parvathi

Devi?. The hunter believed that the water was capable of purifying

requested his brother to fetch him a cup of water from the Ganges
