John Overton High School Graduation Requirements

English 4 credits I, II, III, IV or ELD IA, IB, English I, II


Math 4 credits (one each year) Integrated Math I, Integrated Math II, Integrated Math III, Higher Level Math
Science 3 credits Biology, Chemistry OR Physics, and 1 additional lab science
Social Studies 3.5 credits US History, Personal Finance (1/2), Government (1/2), Economics (1/2), and 1 World
Geography, World History, AP European History OR Ancient/Modern History
World Language 2 credits must be in the SAME foreign language
Physical Education 1 credit

Lifetime Wellness 1 credit

Fine Art 1 credit

Elective Focus/Pathway Courses 3 credits in specific sequence

TOTAL CREDITS REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION = 28 credits (or 4 fewer credits than the maximum number of credits
the student could have earned during his/her 4 years of high school)
GRADE LEVEL PROMOTION RULES

To be a
10th Grader 7 Credits and 1 English credit (Eng I) & 1 Math credit
11th Grader 14 Credits and 2 English credits (Eng I, II) & 2 Math credits
12th Grader 21 Credits and 3 English credits (Eng I, II, III) & 3 Math credits
(Integrated Math IA does not count as a Math credit toward promotion, only Integrated Math IB)

GRADUATING W/ HONORS or DISTINCTION


Honors

Meet all requirements for reg. diploma AND score at or above all of the following ACT subject scores
*English 18 *Math 22
*Science 23 *Reading 22
Distinction
Meet all requirements for reg. diploma, earn a GPA of 85 or higher, AND complete one of the following:

Earn a nationally recognized industry certification (see MNPS CTE 2015-2016 Programs of Study). Any student may satisfy this option by earning the ACT
National Career Readiness Certificate at the Silver Certificate Level.
Participate in at least one of the Governors Schools
Participate in one of the All State musical organizations (includes Army Marching Band)
Participate in Girls or Boys State
Be selected as a National Merit Finalist or Semi-Finalist
Attain a composite score of 31 or higher on the ACT
Attain a score of 3 or higher on at least two Advanced Placement exams (if meeting this requirement, exams need to be completed by the end of the junior year)
Successfully complete the I.B. Diploma Programme
Earn 12 or more semester hours of transcripted postsecondary credit
Successfully complete the Cambridge International Examinations pathway to TN Diploma
Meet the requirements for TN Scholars
Successfully complete the School of Science and Math Program at Vanderbilt (SSMV)

3.0 GPA or minimum ACT score of 21
