One significant learning experience I had was regarding the

importance of all past medical history in regards to a pregnancy.
Looking at the patient as a whole, including living situations,
relationships, work, and many other aspects helps assessors get a
better picture of the overall health of the mother and fetus. Through
personal history and the use of maternal child nursing in Canada, I
have learned that getting a full health assessment enables the
identification of potential risk factors and interventions needed to
ensure the health of both patients.
Obtaining a comprehensive health assessment is critical in ensuring
the health of both patients. By looking at the patient as a whole,
assessors are able to assess potential risks and set in place
interventions to aid the patient throughout their pregnancy. Risk
factors can be medicinal as well as socio-economic; small
interventions during the prenatal period can have a major impact on
the health of the fetus and mother.

Good; I understand the importance of obtaining a comprehensive

health assessment. I achieved this through the readings in the maternal
child nursing care textbook, by applying prior knowledge of obtaining
a health history and building on that with the readings from the text,
and by learning how to assess risk factors and relating how they can
impact the health of fetus and mother.

While this proficiency relates mostly to prenatal care, the importance

of obtaining a comprehensive health history will be used in all aspects
of nursing care. As I move forward into the medical/surgical clinical, I
will use this every day with my patients, obtaining a full health history
as well as identifying potential risks and interventions for their care.
