CONFIDENTIAL @UTHM Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia UNIVERSITI TUN HUSSEIN ONN MALAYSIA FINAL EXAMINATION SEMESTER I SESSION 2015/2016 STRUCTURAL STEEL AND COURSE NAME TIMBER DESIGN COURSE CODE : BRC 43003 BACHELOR OF CIVIL ee ENGINEERING WITH HONOURS EXAMINATION DATE: DECEMBER 2015 / JANUARY 2016 DURATION : 3 HOURS : ANSWER FOUR (4) QUESTIONS INSTRUCTION OUT OF FIVE (5) QUESTIONS THIS QUESTION PAPER CONSISTS OF EIGHT (8) PAGES. CONFIDENTIAL CONFIDENTIAL BFC43003 a Qa (a) (b) Discuss TWO (2) physical properties that affect the strength of wood. (4 marks) Figure Q1(b) shows a primary beam with clear span of 2.8 m. The beam supports a flooring system amounting a total load of 3.9 kN including its self-weight over the whole span. The beam is supported by 50 mm wide walls on both sides. The proposed minimum size for the beam is 70 mm x 190 mm sawn section of Strength Group 3, Select Grade at 19% of moisture content. (Write all relevant modification factors to be used for the design of the above mentioned beam. (5 marks) Carry out necessary deflection verifications for the beam. (5 marks) (iii) Perform design verifications for the beam with regards to its bending, shear and bearing stresses. (11 marks) Figure Q2 shows a dressed sawn column section with size of 150 mm (B) = 250 mm (H). The timber used for this column is classified as heavy hardwood Chengal and graded as Standard Grade at 16% maximum moisture content. The concentrated load, P is located at 90 mm eccentric from its x-x axis. The column is restrained at both ends in position and in direction with a height of 4.2 m. @ (b) (©) Calculate the applied moment if the long term load, P is 45 kN. About which axis do you think the column will bend if you ignore the effects of slenderness ratio? (2 marks) Check the adequacy of column size in resisting the load. (15 marks) In your opinion, what will happen in terms of buckling and design if the same column is pinned brace in the y-y axis by a beam at 1.8 m from the bottom. Substantiate your answer with calculations. (8 marks) : CONFIDENTIAL CONFIDENTIAL BFC43003 3 @ (b) ) © @ Figure Q3(a) shows a circular hollow section (CHS) connected to a building frame via gusset plates. The connection uses non-preloaded bolts rade 4.6 with diameter 22 mm. Check the limit for distances and ig of the connection. State whether the bolt arrangement fulfills the ‘minimum and maximum requirements. (9 marks) Figure Q3(b) shows a welded bracket connection that resist permanent action G, = 100 KN and variable action Qy = 120 KN at point P. The steel grade is $275. () Determine the demand resultant force of the connection. (11 marks) Design the welded connection by proposing a suitable fillet weld size that is able to resist the demand, (5 marks) State TWO (2) conditions for a beam to be considered as restrained beam. (1 mark) Differentiate between restrained and unrestrained beam. (3 marks) Consider a beam with size 457 « 152 * 82 kg/m Grade $275. The beam carries a factored design uniformly distributed load of 24 kN/m in the form of cast-insitu concrete slab over a span of 6 m. Both ends of the beam are attached to the flanges of columns using double web cleat connection. Check the adequacy of the beam in terms of: (i) Bending strength ii) Shear strength (iii) Deflection (10 marks) If the beam of in Q4(c) is subjected only to a point load of 100 KN at the mid span due to additional renovation, revise the design checks to determine the adequacy of the given beam size. (11 marks) a CONFIDENTIAL CONFIDENTIAL BFC43003 es @) (b) © (d) @ ) (ii @ 0) Define the term “design strength”, (1 mark) Explain the constitutive behaviour of structural steel through a typical curve showing the elastic and plastic ranges. (3 marks) In structural steel design for pure axial members, it is better to subject the member under which behaviour? (1 mark) Give reasons for your answer in Q5(b)(i). (4 marks) One UB section is classified as plastic section while another UB section classified as semi-compact section. How do the two UB sections behave differently under similar bending stress up to yield point? (3 marks) For multistorey frames, the analysis and design of simple construction are performed on the basis of two important features, Give an outline of these features. (2 marks) Study the portal frame given in Figure Q5. Design the rafter and column of the portal frame by proposing preliminary $275 sections that are most economical. Ignore checks on sway, stability and deflections for this exercise. The following information are given: Frame spacing: 8.0m Factored loading: 6.4 KN/m (UDL on plan permanent and variable actions) plus vertical load at eaves of 40 KN per side Base fixity: Pinned (11 marks) ~ END OF QUESTION ~ ‘ CONFIDENTIAL CONFIDENTIAL BFC43003 FINAL EXAMINATION SEMESTER/SESSION: SEM 1/2015/2016 PROGRAMME : BFF COURSE NAME : STRUCTURAL STEEL AND.
