Maps show us more than just where to go. Using a map
lets us see the different landforms in the given area.
FYI: In this lesson I am pretending we are from
Johnstown, PA while using that primary resource. When
I have my own class I will accommodate to the area
that most of the students are from.
What is a lake?

7.2.K.B- Identify land and water forms.

The students will be able to identity between several

different landforms with 90% accuracy.

Before- while asking the essential questions observe if

they are paying attention well enough to where they
are comprehending what is being said.
During- Question the kids as you view the map. Asking
them what landform they think that this is as you point
across the map.
After- give the students a test about the landforms.
Create a picture test where there is a picture of each
landform and they must write which one the picture
portrays.

Review what they have learned about maps in the past.
Go over past vocabulary
Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
Discuss how the details of a map make it easier to read.
Discuss how maps have other characteristics to them
that arent noticed until you really look at it. By this we
mean the landforms that are throughout the map but
sometimes forgotten.
Big Idea Statement
Tell the students that maps show us more than just
where to go. Using a map lets us see the different
landforms in the given area.
Essential Questions Statement
What is a lake?
What is a mountain?
What is a stream?
What is a river?
All of these are called landforms.

The students will be able to identity between several
different landforms with 90% accuracy.
Transition
The students will start off on the rug in front of the
classroom for the lesson and later move to their desks
for the independent written assessment.

Modeling of the Concept
Put the map of Johnstown, PA on the board for all
students to see, allowing the students to sit in one group
on the rug in the front of the classroom which is in front
of the board.
Guiding the Practice
While discussing the different landforms make a card of

each landforms name that way as you go over the

landform you can place the name on top of where this is
on the map of Johnstown, PA.
Providing the Independent Practice
The students will take the test independently.
Transition
The only transition here is from sitting on the floor
together rather than in their desks for the whole class
lesson.
