NUTRITIONIST
The job of the nutritionist was to define hunger and the three
stages of starvation
Hunger is a feeling of discomfort or weakness caused by a lack of food
A human can go more than three weeks without food, but not
water
People normally feel the pangs of hunger 12-24 hours after their last meal
There are three phases to starvation:
First phase: Blood glucose levels are maintained through the
production of glucose
Second phase: Fats become primary energy source
Third phase: Proteins become major energy source
The average child (age 2-3) needs 1,400 calories a day
Undernourishment having insufficient food or other substance for
the body to survive
Malnutrition is not eating enough nutritional foods
Acute Starvation: Seen when the necessary food has been
suddenly and completely withheld
Chronic Starvation: The emaciation is more marked and death may occur
after a prolonged period due to disease

PATHOLOGIST
Identify diseases due to malnutrition:
Iron deficiency, which can cause anemia
Vitamin A deficiency, which can cause blindness in
children
Vitamin B-1 deficiency, which results in weight loss
and fatigue
Kwashiorkor Disease:

A life threatening and debilitating form of malnutrition

Caused by a lack of protein in the diet
Easily treated
People who suffer from this disease have an extremely thin
appearance
