School Board President Marlene Yang leaves

district in a position of strength, paves way
for the future

By Quynh Trueblood,
Superintendent of Schools
Marlene Yang concludes her
nal term on the Kohler School
Board in April. Ms. Yang served
a total of 6 years, 4 years as President. Presiding over her nal
meeting on March 14, President
Yang thanked the community for
putting its trust in her and nodded to past board members with
whom she served alongside: Dr.
Jane Bishop, Laura Kohler, John
Suralik, Diane Kelly, Matt Kautzer, and Nancy Case.
Christina Koberstein, Vice President, recognized Ms. Yang for
her years of service and presented a plaque to stand proudly on
Ebben Field alongside the plagues
of long standing board members
Laura Kohler, John Suralik and
Diane Kelly, the original designers of the current strategic plan
and each instrumental in the success of the Ebben Field Phase II

project. Ms. Koberstein remarked,

Marlenes wisdom, foresight,
and dedication has steered the
district through many changes in
education over the past six years,
and that Ms. Yangs leadership
places the new board in a strong
position.
Ms. Yangs leadership laid
building blocks on which the future of the district rests. These
building blocks include setting
the vision of the ve-year strategic plan, navigating through the
impact of ACT 10, onboarding
and retaining a superintendent and
principal, achieving National Blue
Ribbon recognition, directing the
boards energies through the continued dynamic political environment and new school laws, maintaining scal health through state
budget reductions, supporting
the Ebben Field Phase II project,
completing the rst professional
handbooks, implementing a best-

in-class teacher compensation

structure, and leading the structural reorganization of administrators to support quality teaching.
Ms. Yang wished the new board
success and oered her continued
support along with an experienced
point of view, When board members with diering viewpoints, experiences, and opinions are able to
work together, the synergies that
are created can be unbelievably
eective in setting the strategic
direction of the school district.
In a nal address to the school
faculty and sta on March 16,
Ms. Yang conrmed that the district has met the challenges of the
past six years head on and with a
good amount of success. Calling
attention to meeting a challenge,
Ms. Yang noted, My challenge
to each of you at the beginning of
the year was to reach and engage
these types of students not just
the best and brightest or loudest

they are the relatively easy ones,

but to reach and engage these invisible students. Several of you
have come to me, and told me
how that story has inspired you. I
am deeply and personally grateful
for that. If any group of educators
has the power to succeed here, I
believe you do.
In a closing remark to Ms. Yang,
Superintendent Quynh Trueblood
shared, Together we have accomplished important work. You
have been the most visible and
present President. You leave us
with a legacy of a Blue Ribbon
School District. Thank you for always leading in the best interest of
students, sta and community.
The district and community are
grateful for Ms. Yangs outstanding service to Kohler Schools and
for the benet from her continued
active support of our schools.

for growth for the village! We
need to be able to sustain the high
quality of life enjoyed by villagers. Keeping taxes in check will be
a challenge well need to address
and it is my desire to nd amicable solutions without undue pressure. A formula for future property tax assessments will need to be
carefully considered. Additional
input into these matters, from village residents, is important to me
and to be encouraged. We will
also need to continue to work with
our police department, re department, and others to assure a safe

Kohler freshmen Cindy Zheng

accepted to distinguished
summer camp at Harvard
By Clara Montes
The National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC)s prestigious summer programs provide
high school students with experiences to ready them for future
colleges and careers. The subjects
of the programs vary from business to performing arts, yet their
excellent camps for medicine and
health care remain the most well
renowned. They allow students
to participate in activities simulating real life practices such as
techniques used in surgical procedures, clinical examinations, and
diagnostic and treatment of patients. In addition, students attending learn about todays healthcare
challenges and explore advanced

scientic research in areas such as

cancer and HIV/AIDS.
Cindy Zheng, a Kohler High
School freshman, has been accepted into the NSCs summer medical
program, taking place on the campus of Harvard Medical School
in Boston. Cindys hard working
eorts and achievements in her
education have paid o, allowing
her to become involved in activities which will jump start her efforts in reaching her goal of going
into the medical eld. Ms. Krejcarek and Ms. Sheets, teachers at
Kohler High School, both made it
possible for Cindy to participate in
this program by writing letters of
recommendations. They say, She
Loves Science.

Doggy Sanitation Stations to be

installed around Kohler by Girl Scout
By Frannie Hillstrom
Eight Dog Sanitation Stations
are planned to be installed in late
June through the work of one local teen Girl Scout, Frannie Hillstrom. Each station will consist
of biodegradable dog bags and
a waste can for dog owners to
clean up after their pets, said
Hillstrom who is working towards completing her Girl Scout
Gold Award Project, which is
the highest award in Girl Scouting. The stations will potentially
be located by Ebben Field, Lost

Woods, Dog Bone Park, Woodlake, and the Ravine. To earn

money, she has put together a
group of friends to serve as the
Scoop the Poop Team. This team
can be hired to clean up your
yard of winters accumulated dog
waste in exchange for sponsoring
her Doggy Sanitation Stations in
an amount you feel the service
performed is worth. Schedule the
Scoop the Poop Team for your
yard by calling (920) 254-1750.
Did you know that dog feces
contributes to contaminated wa-

ter? An environmental concern

for the Village of Kohler is the
lack of care to clean up after your
pet(s), many view dog feces as
fertilizer, its not. Dog feces can
cause illness in both humans
and other pets. Feces may contain parvovirus, roundworms,
hookworms, whip worms, thread
worms, giardia, and coccidia.
When it is not cleaned up, these
parasites will then run into the
sewer system, thus infecting the
drinking water and soil.

Procedures for school

closings due to
inclement weather

We ask parents to discuss this issue

with their child now before the actual
emergency occurs. If you are generally
not home during the day, be sure your
child knows where he/she is to go if
school closes early. Will he/she go home
with a classmate, an older sibling, or a
relative? Have you made prior arrangements with this individual to be on stand
by for these occasions? Please make
your arrangements in advance and make
sure your child is fully aware of what to
do in case school closes early.
Any decision to close school for all
or any portion of a school day will be
made as early as possible in order to afford parents the opportunity to make
alternate child care plans. All closing

KOHLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RECOGNITION
I am proud to announce Kohler Elementary School has earned the 2015-16
Wisconsin Title I School of Recognition
Award for High Achievement from the
Department of Public Instruction. This
recognition means the faculty, staff, and
families of Kohler Elementary School
are closing the achievement gap for
students. Together, we are changing the
course of childrens lives by helping them
be good readers and math thinkers.
Three years ago, the district with
financial support from the Kohler School
Foundation, put in place three systemic
pieces and is getting a good return on our
investment:

PREPARING STUDENT FOR THE FUTURE
Kohler Schools is preparing students
college and career.
The Sheboygan County workforce development efforts continue. The Sheboygan
Economic Development Corporation in
partnership with the Sheboygan Chamber
of Commerce have launched a branding
campaign for the county, titled Someplace Better, to address the current
reality that while Sheboygan Countys
job market is the fastest growing the
state, employers can not find workers
to presently fill 1,600 jobs. At the
latest Chamber Friday Forum, Governor
Walker applauded the countys efforts and
representatives of the countys largest
employers, Kohler Co, Sargento, Acuity,
and Aurora, stated they are looking for
workers. Someplace Better is the name
of the website containing key selling
points, including schools, for prospective
workers to choose Sheboygan County as a
place to live, work, and community build.
Elementary Principals Report
(Lisa Greene)
The Elementary teachers remain hard
at work. The weather has been pretty
good, so the children have been able to
get outside on a fairly regular basis. We
follow DPI suggested guidelines of 0 If
either the actual temperature or wind
chill is below 0, the children will stay
indoors. We monitor the weather for
temperature and precipitation throughout
the day.
PBIS
The Elementary Students have earned
over $14,000 worth of Bomber
Bucks. Students can use their Bomber
Bucks to purchase items at the PBIS store
called The Hangar. We have designed
our PBIS reward system to align with the
elementary Personal Finance Literacy
standards.
When we hit a benchmark, students earn
a school wide celebration.
We previously had a game day and this
week we will have our 2nd schoolwide
celebration.
For being extra good, the students will
receive a week of Extras for our PBIS
celebration.
Today, students received an extra piece
of gum.
On Tuesday, the students will be able to
wear an extra piece of clothing- they can
wear a hat for hat day.
On Wednesday, they will receive an extra
snack- popcorn.
On Thursday, they can be extra comfy
with a pajama day.
And on Friday, they will receive an extra
recess. They were really excited about
this one and I hope the weather is nice so
it is extra fun for them!

MS-HS Principal Report
(Timothy Brown)
Kohler Public Schools Strategic Plan
As part of our last phase of the 2012-16
Kohler Public Schools Strategic Plan, we
are reflecting on best practices surrounding homework to help our students inspire, engage and achieve.. The Strategic
Action Plan specifically detailed to A) Reinforce the Student-Life Balance Initiative
by establishing a common purpose for
homework to deepen understanding. B)
Study current best practices in homework
on professional development days, and C)
Implement and document a school-wide
homework philosophy at the High School.
Our staff is committed to reviewing policy
and improving our delivery of services.
The first step toward reviewing our
philosophy on homework was done at our
February 10th All-Staff meeting where we
reviewed our Strategic Action Plan, discussed peer-reviewed research, as well
as incorporated data from the Community
Survey Results to set the framework for
our discussion. At our February 10th
meeting, each teacher at the Elementary,
Middle, and High School went through an
exercise to identify their top 3 purposes
as well as their top benefits of homework. We then disaggregated that data
to each school where they began to use
data to determine a general philosophy
of homework, and how we can marry the
purposes and benefits together.
Most recently we used a large chunk of
our Professional Development morning to
have a larger discussion around creating
a collective foundation of what homework
looks like at each school. We are using
best practice research to to close the gap
between our current practice to create
future best practices that align with our
shared philosophy.
While we are not there yet, we are
on schedule to hone in on a shared
philosophy and best practices we can
all agree to, one that we support, and
can document to help all students in our
learning community become inspired,
engaged and achieve.
Staffing
The Kohler School District is also
committed to find and retain the highest
quality staff and to continue the work of
the School-Life Balance Initiative. The
defining piece of this initiative is in the
creation of a search committee to replace
our outgoing Activities Director. At this
point we have identified the mechanics of
this search in terms of timeline, interview
team, the vetting of the highly qualified
candidates and the interview dates.
However, beyond the mechanics, we
are searching for someone to help grow
our school culture around athletics and
activities. We are looking for someone
who understands the unique attributes of
the Village of Kohler, has a global vision
of the student-athlete, someone who
is visible and accessible to the public.
Someone who is positive yet firm, someone who has a high level view of an entire
k-12 athletic programming. Someone
who is knowledgeable of development
of appropriate skills at the appropriate
levels. Someone who knows that the
definition of success is not just in the
Wins and Losses column. There are many
attributes to this position that I could go
on, but I am of the opinion that this is a
high leverage position, one who we want
to truly find the correct fit for our system.

I believe we have a good team assembled

and will make every effort to find the best
candidate.

Drug Take Back Initiative

On April 30, 2016, the State of Wisconsin is holding a Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative being held throughout
Wisconsin. The green drug box in the departments lobby is
open for drop os every day. The goal is to provide a safe,
convenient, and responsible means of disposal of prescription
medications. Unused prescription medications in homes create a public health and safety concern, because they can be
accidentally ingested, stolen, misused, and abused. Unused
or expired medicine should never be ushed or poured down
the drain. Removing potentially dangerous pharmaceutical
substances from our states medicine cabinets helps to prevent them from going into our water supply. Water reclamation facilities are not designed to remove all of them and trace
amounts of pharmaceuticals are showing up in rivers and lakes
around the world.
Greeneld Drive Crosswalk
Be aware of the new crosswalk on Greeneld Drive and the
potential that with the warmer weather students may be using
it to and from school. All crosswalks require that the driver
yield to the pedestrian in the crosswalk. This crosswalk will
alert the driver to their presence when activated by the pedestrian. Parents should advise their children to use this crosswalk
instead of the crosswalk by Church Street. This area has fewer
lanes to cross and has the added safety of the ashing lights.
