The Big Five Opinion!

Carousel is heavy man. Like wow. A suicide occurs and a family has to recover from the

absence of their father. The innocent Julie surprisingly becomes a widow. From the beginning you
never assume Billy would actually fall for Julie due to his masculine independence, but regardless he
falls for her. He loses his sense of self when he doesn't have a job. I believe this insecurity and
inferiority leads to him hitting Julie. Originally when I read the play I was outraged by the hitting that
seemed to be accepted. However, after talking to friends we concluded that R & H specifically used
the abuse to reveal that it was an issue in present day America. The clambake environment opens
up the possibility for the 4th side of the audience to be the water front! Also when Billy goes with
Jigger into the woods the 4th side of the audience becomes the confusing and tree ridden forest .
This play deals with suicide, abuse (both mental and physical), family dynamics, jealousy, insecurity,
desperation, growth, adaptation, strength, and rapid change. Everyone can learn from this particular
story.!

Oklahoma, upon further investigation has a lot of note worthy themes. Between Ado Annie

and Ali she almost is enticed by his money and time. Whereas Will Parker has been thrown aside
since he hasnt spoiled her and hasnt been around, this ties into how the human desire of nurture
can effect ones behavior. Curly and Laurey reveal what so many people in romance go through!
Both are so unsure if the other has feelings that it takes forever for them to become an item because
neither tells the other their feelings due to the insecurity that they are unrequited. Laurey and Jud
reveal the darker side of our humanity between the power difference and struggle between male
and females. It becomes evident early on Laurey is frightened of Jud, therefore it can be inferred he
may physically harm another human. I suppose his violence and anger isnt only geared towards
females, but males too(Curly). Ado Annies father makes Will buy her for marriage which taps into
parents internal and never ending desire to shape their childrens lives; which could be tied to their

own failures. Sadly Jud tries to kill Curly and accidentally dies on his own knife. I feel like this theme
address the danger of people who arent mentally healthy and how they can be a harm to both
themselves and others! It would have been best if early on the characters would of tried and help
Jud instead of mindlessly interact with and provoke him. These are some deep topics and ideas from
R& H to ponder. The 4th wall opportunities of fascination include the Oklahoma field of corn and a
starry night full of constellations.!

The King and I focuses on cultural differences and how even people of completely opposite

backgrounds can come together as one. Anna reveals the strength of a true woman to stay
connected to her dignity. She holds her ground about deserving her own space even though almost
everyone else would give into the king. And then Britains view of the king as a barbarian ties into
world affairs and how most countries judge others from the simplicity of the fact that they don't know
them. Their behavior also shows how manipulative one can become when they are deceitful and
have a desire to mislead another. Is what Anna and the king did bad? Technically they were
deceitful However their end goal was harmony which makes things more innocent. Also is it selfish
how the king will only give Anna her own place if she helps him first with tricking the visitors? Tuptim
and Lun Tha delve into what forbidden love is like. The ending brings up the themes of death and
time. The audience gets to be apart of the outdoor palace in (Bangkok, Siam) aka Thailand. You can
imagine how picturesque the palace is. When the play is performed(within the play) the audience
could parallel as the audience at the play (thats within a play). The play is beautiful and delves so
deep into humanities ways. !

In The Sound of Music Maria is the outcast. She is the character that doesn't fit in, yet she

stands out with brilliance. Her heart is so big and her character wins over the children. This play
touches upon family and change. The kids hate having to adapt and consistently meet their new
mother like figure. It takes place in Salzburg, Austria and the holocaust is going on too! Thats why at
the end they escape. So the time period alone brings up all the moral conflicts occurring. The
captains love for Maria shows how it is never to late to fall in love. Also the heart can sway and
change. Originally he loved Elsa, but his heart fell for Maria as soon as he realized they were soul

mates. He was in denial, but with something so real you can only deny it for such a short time. The
play touches upon aging. Rolf goes from an innocent boy into becoming a nazi. This phenomenon
changed kids. Cults have a scary, but effective way of working. At the end when the Von Trapps
climb the Alps. The audience then gets to embody the mountains! When Rolf serenades Liesel the
audience gets to become the outdoor night sky and surroundings of the villa. This play directly
addresses the holocaust. How brave of R & H. !

In South Pacific international affairs bubble to the surface. Nellie a U.S. nurse falls in love

with Emile de Becque, a french plantation owner. Their love is socially unacceptable due to their
differences. And then Cable falls for Liat. Once again an american falls for a pacific islander. Nellie
has to deal with meeting Emiles children from his past marriage. Nellie decides she cant be with him
because of his Polynesian wife. This brings up the theme of racism. Cable explains how this racism
isnt born into you, but taught. The audience gets to be a beautiful ocean and a striking forest as
well. This plays theme of racism shows how ahead of their times R & H were.!

Rodgers and Hammerstein always have the heroine and the masculine male character and

the two fall in love. They also usually have a couple comedic characters as well. And they have a
couple more grounded characters who have great advice. And of course there is usually a bad guy
as well.I have grown to have so much more respect for them due to their bravery in addressing
several frightening and socially uncomfortable topics with these characters. They knew what the
ingredients were to make not only a good musical, but an influential musical that reveals humanities
strengths and weaknesses. We can all learn from R & H. !
