Description:
Inspirational montage created using three photos and typography.

Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Demonstrate more advanced Adobe Photoshop skills using masks to blend multiple
photos. Learn to use filters and manage Photoshop layers.
Process:
I started with three photos-- the image of Jesus Christ, the lighthouse, and the
background image of sand. I placed the image of the Savior over the image of the
lighthouse and added a mask layer. I eliminated the harsh edges of the photo using
black paint at 100% opactiy. Next, I increased the stroke size of my paintbrush and
lowered the opactiy to 30% to fade the rest of the image just slightly. After inserting
my text and placing each element where it fit best, I inserted the image of the sand
and set it to overlay then lowered the opacity so that the main images could show
through. I added a gradient to the lighthouse image to give my design a warm,
inviting coloring. I aligned the text on the left of the lighthouse and at an angle as
your eyes move down, so as to add flow to the design.

Process:
After contemplating my message and audience, I decided to target my design
towards female clients interested in high end, all natural haircare products. I started
by designing my logo in Adobe Illustrator. I picked a modern font for the Glamour
Effects text and then drew my own script using the paintbrush tool to create the
text underneath. I used the paintbrush tool to draw the profile of the girl in my logo.
In Photoshop, I edited the photo of the girl with red hair and cut out the main part
of the photo. I designed the main part of my brochure in Adobe InDesign. Teal is
the main color throughout the brochure, but brick, purple, and yellow complete my
double complementary color scheme. Using teal on the inside and outside of the
brochure creates repetition and flow. I added the photos and color blocks. I added
my text and wrapped it around the photo of the girl with red hair. I spent a lot of
time moving the different pieces around to see what looked the most cohesive. I
finally decided on the layout you see above. I really enjoyed creating this design.

a watercolor setting and lowered the opacity.

St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital
Process:
I started by brainstorming the kind of event that I wanted to design for. After
scanning an image using an Epson scanner, I decided on designing a flier for a
charity ball hosted by St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital. I contemplated several
color schemes, but the simple elegance of a monochromatic color scheme really
appealed to me. After resizing it, I used the scanned image as the main backdrop
for the design and then built off of that. Using only Microsoft Word, I added the
necessary body text and inserted the St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital logo. I
aligned all the main body text on the right. I had fun playing with the title text and
decided to take a chance an use a decorative font for the word ball. Because it
only appears once in the design, the decorative font adds to the elegance of the ad.
Upon completion of my draft, my ad was critiqued by a handful of people. I made
the necessary changes and adjustments and completed the final design.

Learn basic photography skills.
Understand digital imaging and upload image.
Learn and understand basic editing principles in Photoshop.
Process:
I used a Cannon digital camera to capture this image. I took the photo early in the
morning so as to achieve the best light. After taking several photos, I decided to
focus on this one because of all the beautiful, intricate details found in it. I uploaded
the photo the begin the editing process in Photoshop. For each edit, I created a
new layer for each edit so that I didnt edit the original photo by mistake. I started
by increasing the vibrancy of the photo up to about 30. Next, I added a cooling
filter to enhance the cold, winter feel of the photograph. After many more edits
including enhancing the brightness, contrast, hues, and saturation of the photo, I
finished and saved my project.

Objectives:
Apply basic design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve flier layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact.
Process:
I began the design by sketching out some of my ideas. I used Adobe InDesign to
create my preferred layout. I chose two simple typefaces for my heading. I had a
lot of fun playing with the text and resizing the letter f to make it stand out. To
create contrast, I emphasized the word conference in the title, which also added to
the visual interest of the piece. I inserted several text boxes and aligned them the
heading and the photograph. The dark gray blocks on the top and bottom of the flier
pull the design together and establish repetition. The design contains enough white
space for the eye to relax and be drawn to the most important information. I was
given the image, logo, and content for this flier.

Process:
I designed this simple web page using Text Wrangler. I worked with basic HTML
and CSS programing. I connected the HTML and CSS files. I inserted my own logo
design image and added my own text. I coordinated the typography and adjusted the
color and size of the typefaces to correlate with the design of my logo. I customized
the color of the background and added a fun polka-dot pattern. I added the
necessary tags in HTML and comments in CSS.
