An advantage for your
business

Environmental management
Environmental management is a process that organizations
undertake to regulate and protect the impact on the environment
of their operations.
Environmental management aims to prevent pollution, preserve
natural resources, and reduce or mitigate environmental risks -and it will create an environmentally-friendly image with different
stakeholders. By implementing an environmental management
system, a continuous and systematic approach is followed in
order to work properly.

Why an environmental management system?

An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a set of
processes and practices that enables an organization to reduce
its environmental impacts (risks) and increase its operating
efficiency. An EMS helps a company also to address its regulatory
demands and compliance in a systematic and cost-effective
manner. This proactive approach can reduce the risk of noncompliance and improve health and safety practices for
employees and the public. A certified environmental management
system can enhance the competitiveness and the environmental
image of your organization.
An environmental management system provides structural
insights into monitoring of emissions, waste, raw materials,
energy and other environmental aspects. Environmental goals
and performance will be concrete and transparent. This
information is both relevant to the various external stakeholders
such as customers and authorities, as well as for employee
awareness of environmental issues and responsibilities.

EMS under ISO 14001

An EMS encourages a company to continuously improve its
environmental performance. The system follows a repeating
cycle. The most commonly used framework for an EMS is the one
developed by the International Organization for Standardization
(ISO) for the ISO 14001 standard. ISO 14001 is an internationally
accepted standard which indicates the requirements that a
profound environmental management system should meet. If
desired, an environmental management system can also be
certified according to this standard. However, even without such
a certificate you can greatly benefit from the insight that an
environmental management system offers on the environmental
performance of your organization.

What EY can do for you

We can assist you in several parts

Support in conducting an initial screening of ISO 14001

A baseline survey provides an overview of:

"What is already there" - understanding of the
environmental impact, existing procedures, legislation,
etc.;
"What is required by the ISO 14001 standard" - this is a
combination of a "compliance scan" (with environmental
laws and regulations) and a "gap analysis". Based on the
result, you obtain insights into the required activities,
planning and resources to implement an environmental
management system corresponding to ISO 14001.

Customized trainings on (environmental) management

systems (in Company training, webinar, etc.).

We provide customized trainings, such as:

Training interpretation of the ISO 14001 standard
(including guidelines to set up your environmental
management system);
Training in internal audits (tailored to the audit team of
your organization, including practical guidance);
Specific training for the management of specific
environmental issues such as hazardous materials (how
to meet PGS15), waste management, environmental
incidents, etc.

Guidance on the establishment of environmental

management systems (ISO 14001)

After training and with the action plan from the baseline survey,
you can set up your environmental management. If desired, EY
can gradually give additional advice on further effective
development of the system. The duration and intensity of this
process depends on the type of organization and the dedication
and needs of your organization. You can choose for an active or a
passive support. EY can act as a trainer, coach or process
monitor.

Conducting internal audits, pilot audits or compliance

audits for your organization

EY can take care of a part of your organization's internal audits, or

even all the internal audits. For example if your organization is too
small to compose an audit team. We can also provide an audit trial
for you to test whether the environmental management system is
indeed on a certifiable level for ISO 14001.
EY can also assist in performing the compliance audit in the
subsequent stages, after the implementation process and after
obtaining the certificate.

Certifying the ISO 14001 management system standard

CertifyPoint is an independent and impartial certification

institute. As an accredited and independent certification institute,
we can help you meet your basic requirements and help you
improve the efficiency and effectiveness of your business
management systems. We keep the business at the center,
identifying areas of redundancy, bottlenecks and potential
efficiency gains by means of a systematic and independent
certification approach.
Our certification auditors gain knowledge from auditing these ISO
standards and also by getting exposed to their implementation
through advisory assignments by EY, thereby broadening their
knowledge horizon. Having knowledge of both implementation and
certification provides a wider, more detailed understanding of
practical challenges related to the tasks associated with these
international standards and the ability to attest the underlying
management system.
