Narrative
This curriculum map comes from the Roosevelt School District website. The following lessons have been created for a fifth
grade classroom in which I am currently student-teaching. This class contains twenty-five students of varying academicals levels, as
well a gifted cluster.
CURRICULUM MAP
The lesson will start off with a short PowerPoint on how to read with purpose. In the PowerPoint we will talk about asking
yourself what you want to get out of the reading before you start, reading the questions to answer prior to reading, and previewing the
text. Next the teacher will model how to do this with one of the sleep articles. Before reading the teacher will write the following
question on the board According to the article sleep is important what are the three benefits of getting plenty of sleep? Giving them
the question before hand models using one of the strategies talked about in the PowerPoint. While reading the students will annotate
the article and look for the answer to the question. This will hold them accountable for following along as the teacher reads. After
finishing the reading students will answer the question.
Next the students will be given a different sleep article and three questions to answer. They must practice reading with purpose
in order to answer the questions.
How much sleep does the article recommend you get each night? How much sleep do you actually get? Assuming you
wake up at 6:30 for school what time would you have to go to bed to get the recommended amount of sleep?
According to the article what are negative side effects of not getting enough sleep?
CURRICULUM MAP
Did the article convince you to get more sleep at night? Why or why not?
The teacher will walk around as students do this and offer assistance. Once the students have answered the questions the
teacher will go over them.
Mini Lesson Two
Go Outside and Play!
5.RL.1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
To start go over with the students how quote from an outside source. Use the giant post-it notes and write down the following
as you discuss it
Introduce the quote that way the reader knows they are reading someone elses words. This also gives credit to the speaker and
avoids plagiarism.
o According to _____ quote.
o Experts say quote.
o Etc
After introducing the quote you have to talk about why it is important. Why did you add it to your paper?
Use the book from SFA to show the students some examples of how to do this.
CURRICULUM MAP
Next the students will use the physical activity articles to answer the following prompt in a well written paragraph.
Using evidence from the articles explain the benefits of being physically active.
Students will read and annotate the articles and pull quotes from them that fit into their paragraphs. The teacher will walk around as
students do this and offer assistance.
CURRICULUM MAP
The next step in the lesson involves the PowerPoint which briefly goes over some of the major impacts humans have had on
the environment and the animals that live in them. The PowerPoint will also discuss some of the proposed solutions to these problems
like solar panels. The students will take notes during the slide show so they can reference the information later on.
Once the PowerPoint is finished the teacher will hand out the sheet of paper with some of the environmental problems we face
today like plastic in the ocean, animal extinction, and global warming. The students will with their shoulder partner decide on a
problem from the list. Using their laptops to gather information they will think of a possible solution to the issue. They will then
present their solution to the class.
