Description of Activities and Setting

Time

This is where I will bring the idea of opinion to the classroom. I

want the students to start talking and thinking about why
opinion is important.

1. Focus and Review

Today class we are going to be learning about authors

opinion and what it means for an author to have an opinion.
Can someone tell me what an opinion is? Okay good, now I
want someone to give me an example of an opinion. Lets go
with food, tell me something you like or dislike. Okay good,
now I want someone to tell me their opinion on the same
thing. See class not everyone will have the same opinion
when it comes to different topics. Its okay to have your own
opinion. Why do you guys think that I am talking so much
about opinions?

minutes

I will tell the students what we are going to be doing here.

2. Statement of
Objective
For Student

When reading in class sometimes we notice how an author is

feeling about the topic. They can either have strong opinions
or sometimes hard to find opinions. So today we are going to
learn about the importance of finding the authors opinion and
having evidence to support that.
Do you think it is important to know why someone has an
opinion?
Do you think it is important to know if that opinion is true or
not?
It is very important to know why and to have evidence from
the text that tells us the correct opinion. First I am going to
show you how to find the opinion and then we are going to do
one together. After we work these out on the board we are
going to partner up and work on a worksheet.

This is where I will show my students what we are going to be

looking for.

4. Guided Practice

5. Independent
Practice

First class I will model for you how to find the authors opinion
and how to find supporting evidence from the text. After this
lesson you will be able to identify how the author is feeling
about a topic and find supporting details. This is a very short
passage about dolphins I am going to read it to you and tell
you what I think the authors opinion is.
Do you guys think it is important to have evidence supporting
the authors opinion?
Why?
Why would we need that?

Here I will read and tell the students what the authors opinion
is and circle in the story what the supporting evidence is.
I will then ask one student to read out loud the passage. Then
I will ask the students to pick an opinion and decide which the
author would believe. I will ask a different student to find the
supporting details in the story. This is the guided practice that
we will be going together.
This is where the students will now go back to their seats or
find a place in the room to work with one partner on the
worksheet I have found.
Okay class do you think you understand a little bit more on

authors opinion now? Good, because we are going to work on

some on our own. I want you guys to pick one partner to work
on a worksheet with. Listen first before we move. This is the
worksheet it is on sports participation and you are going to
read the passage first and then answer the questions on the
back. This one is a little bit longer so if you need to mark up
the text when you come across an opinion I would suggest so.
We are going to be working at a level 2 so that means we are
talking quietly only to our partner about the worksheet. I am
going to give you 10 minutes on the timer and we can see if
anyone needs more time after that goes off. Ready, move.
I will be walking around the classroom helping those who need
help. Making sure students stay on task while working
together.
After everyone is finished we will come back together and go
over the passage. I will put the reading up on the overhead
and we will first talk about what they read and see if anyone
underlined anything important in the story. Then we will flip to
the back and go over the questions together. Talking about
everyones opinions on what they think about the authors
opinion.
After we have went over the worksheet and all students are certain of
authors opinion I will collect those papers and we will move on to our
assessment.

7. Closure

Okay great job on the worksheet class I loved the way you guys worked
together and stayed quit enough. We are going to head back to our own
seats and do one more practice but independently this time. I want to
see how much you learned from our reading lesson today. So remember
this is a level 0 time where I should not hear any talking. I will set the
timer for you guys. It is going to be two very short passages and you will
need to circle the opinion and then write in some evidence you have
found. So just like the two we did on the smart board at the beginning.

Great job today everyone.

Can someone tell me what he or she learned today?
Can someone else tell me what he or she need to look for
when reading a text?
Can someone else tell me why it is important to have
evidence?

5
minutes

Can one more person tell me the most important thing to

remember about authors opinion?
Good class now I want you to go home today and tell two
people what you learned about authors opinion.

The students will have to read two passages and circle the best opinion
from the story. They will need to write down supporting evidence from
the passage.
The students must get 100% on this small assessment for me to see that
they understand authors opinion.
