Motivation and Introduction:

Good Morning boys and girls, today we will be looking at the moon
**On the smart board, have moon written in the centre and brainstorm
ideas (use bubbl.us)

Resources/References
Smart
board/bubbl.us/chair/mat
space

What do we already know about the moon?

Listen to students responses and write them in the brain storm
Wow, we already know so much! But what would you like to learn
about the moon?
**Make another branch for what we want to learn on brainstorm
**If students dont mention the moon changing size, hint it to the
students by saying that the moon changes shapes every night
Today we will look at how the moon changes shape every night and
why and how it does it

motion
recorder/cookies/teachers
video

**Prompt students
Why does the moon have these phases?
**Prompt students about the suns reflection on the moon
Can all of the girls please stand up and get an Ipad and sit with a
friend
Can all of the boys please stand up and get an Ipad and sit with a
friend
Does everyone have an Ipad?
I would like you all to create your own moon phases video using
cookies and we will be using the stop motion recorder application
**Settle students down
Does anybody want me to go through the app?
**Help students
Boys and girls, I have an example of a stop motion moon phases
video for you to watch and I will stop it at points and show you how I

have done it
**Important notes!
1. Students need to work backwards in the phases: take the shot
of the full moon first and the last one should be new moon
2. There is only 2 cookies per pair, if you eat your cookie then
you do have a second but avoid making mistakes
Boys and girls you can now start, please make sure that if you have
any questions please raise your hand and I will come to you as soon
as I can
** Help students, write anecdotal notes on cooperation
Please make sure you have the Earth in your video and where it
would be when the moon is changing phases
15
minutes

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

You have all worked cooperatively together today and I will be giving
the class 5 points
Would anybody like to show their moon phases video first?
**Make sure everyone can see
Show all pairs short videos and provide constructive feedback

minutes

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

Can all of the girls please turn off their apps on their Ipads and put
them back in the holder and sit back on the mat
Can all of the boys please turn off their apps on their Ipads and put
them back in the holder and sit back on the mat
Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be
judged?)
Objective one: Understand that the moon rotates around the Earth
Ask students a question about the relationship between the moon and
the Earth, in their video this will be evident
Objective two: Demonstrate orally or physically that the moon has 5
phases
Students would have successfully completed a stop motion video
about the 5 phases of the moon and if asked questions, are able to
explain why it is like this
