6.1 Safety Responsibilities


Safety is everyones job! Make an environment that minimizes the possibility of personal injuries to
employees and co-workers.

Practice accident prevention and good housekeeping.

Wear safety clothing, including safety glasses, safety shoes, gloves, welding helmets, and aprons.

Do not operate equipment without proper protective equipment or without safety guards in place.

Failure to comply with safety measures can cause injury to others; the Company may
suffer financial losses, which may result in disciplinary action, including termination.

6.2 Right to Refuse Work Due to Unsafe Conditions


Employees have the right to refuse to run equipment or perform a work assignment if the assignment
places the employee or coworkers in imminent danger. Further, employees will not be punished for using
their rights as described in this policy. Under this refusal to work policy, the following conditions must be
met. The employee

Finds that a safety defect exists, such as safety mats (not floor mats), light curtains, guards, or
ventilation are missing or not operating correctly.

Has immediately communicated the safety defect in the operation to the supervisor.

Realizes the issues are not resolved. The equipment or operation must be shut down and locked
until maintenance has repaired the unsafe condition.

If previous conditions are met, an employee should immediately contact a position of authority, such as
maintenance, supervisor, department manager, EH&S coordinator, or plant manager.
If an employee has a question regarding an operation or whether a safety defect exists, he/she should
notify the supervisor to report the concern. The supervisor is then responsible for addressing these
concerns with appropriate personnel to ensure safety.

6.3 Safety Rules


Personal Care
Employees must

Wear an approved hair band in areas designated by plant management for those with hair, which
is defined as longer than shoulder length.

Not be under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol. These actions are subject to disciplinary
action, up to and including termination. (See section on Drug Free Workplace and Prescription
Drugs/Medicines).

Personal Safety
Immediately report all dangerous conditions, unsafe practices, malfunctioning equipment, and worn or
defective tools to the supervisor.

Watch where you walk and report potential hazards to supervisor. Observe any trip hazards,
slippery spots, or holes in the floor.

Stand clear of industrial trucks and loads being transported by overhead hoists. (See section about
Power Trucks and Pedestrians).

Place scrap materials in designated containers.

Personal electronics such as radios, iPods, mp3 players, and earphones are not allowed in
the production area.

Actions Not Permitted on Company Property

Do not run or participate in horseplay.

Do not carry more riders than a personal motorized scooter is designed to carry.

Do not climb or crawl on skids, wiretainers, or racks.

Chemical Waste
Bottled gas must be transported on approved dollies and secured with the appropriate chains or straps.
Propane gas bottles will be chained outside the building.
Secondary containers must be labeled with chemical information found in the Material Safety Data Sheets
(MSDS) for workplace chemicals.

Specialized Training
Only authorized or qualified personnel will

Operate machines or equipment. Supervisors will determine operator proficiency.

Perform electrical work.

Be permitted in confined spaces.

Make repairs, attend to maintenance or overhaul, and make corrections of malfunctions on


production machinery.

Lock out and tag out procedures must be followed. Employees who are found to have
disregarded a lock out or tag out rule be terminated.

Emergency Procedures
Employees must

Learn all emergency procedures, such as personal duties in crisis situations and all exit routes.

Know the location of fire alarms, extinguishers, water hoses, first aid supplies, and all other
emergency equipment.

Know exit routes, firefighting equipment, electric panels, and aisle ways must be kept clear at all
times.

Not tamper with fire or safety equipment.

6.4 Protective Equipment and Clothing


Work Clothing and Uniforms
Employees must

Wear a uniform daily, if it is provided. If uniforms are not provided, wear long pants with either a
long sleeve or short sleeve shirt. Clothing should fit close to the body to prevent safety hazards.
Tank tops, sleeveless shirts, frayed pants, and cut or torn clothing are not acceptable work attire.

Wear appropriate clothing. In this workplace, shorts, dresses, skirts, and halter-tops are not
permitted. Legs must be covered and no skin should be exposed.

Not wear ties, loose clothing, rings, loose bracelets, or pendant necklaces around machinery that
has rotating or revolving parts. Only wristwatches and stud earrings are permitted while on the
job.

Not use compressed air to clean clothing or any part of the body.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)


Employees must

Wear approved safety glasses with side shields and hearing protection in required areas. This
requirement also applies to visitors.

Wear steel-toed safety shoes in all production work areas. Open toed footwear, high heels, and
canvas top shoes are not permitted in work areas.

Wear safety approved hard hats in required warehouses or distribution centers. The Company
supplies hard hats.

Wear a retractable lanyard that connects to a full body harness when operating a high lift truck.
This harness helps to prevent falls.

Utilize safety devices, apparel, and guards where provided. They must not be removed, adjusted,
or tampered with after machine set-up.

Specific Job Uniforms


Jobs in manufacturing and distribution require protective sleeves.
Welding workers must wear weld coats, weld helmets, weld gloves, and welding spats. The Company
provides these tools. If an item is lost or stolen, the employee must reimburse the Company.
Welding curtains must be used, and welders must wear specified safety apparel during all welding
operations.

6.5 Ergonomics and Manual Handling


When lifting and lowering a load

Place feet close to the load while keeping the back straight, bend the knees, grip the object firmly,
keep chin tucked in, and test the load for stability and weight.

Keep the back straight and lift by straightening the legs.

Do not attempt to lift or move a load beyond your physical capacity. Dont be afraid to
ask for help or mechanical assistance.

6.6 Workplace Injuries and Illness


All workplace injuries or illness must be immediately reported to the supervisor. The supervisor will see
that medical attention is provided, if needed, complete the required reports, and take the necessary steps
to correct any unsafe conditions that may have contributed to the incident. The supervisor is required to
provide the Plant Manager and Human Resources with a written report of what happened before the end
of the work shift when the incident occurred. Failure to notify the supervisor may result in denial of
benefits and disciplinary action.

Medical Treatment
Medical treatment as a result of a workplace injury or illness must be coordinated through the Company.
This treatment is arranged through the Companys Workers Compensation program, which is provided at
no cost to employees.

First Aid
Employees who require first aid must report it to their supervisor or Human Resources. It is important
that minor injuries receive proper medical attention and that documentation is created to protect injured
employees rights under federal and state laws.

Accident Investigation
Thorough investigations will be conducted on each workplace injury or illness to determine the cause of
the incident and learn ways to prevent similar incidents in the future. The Company will conduct a
thorough investigation to determine if an employee engaged in an unsafe act. If this is the case,
disciplinary action may be taken and may include termination.

6.7 Tornado Safety Procedures


Employees, visitors, vendors, and contractors will be escorted by their facility contact to the proper
location shelter.

Seek shelter immediately upon notification of a tornado warning.

Evacuate all offices and close doors upon being notified of the warning.

Close all shelter doors, making sure that they are not locked, to allow additional people access to
the shelter area.

Stay away from glass windows.

Go to interior small rooms, hallways, or restrooms on the lowest floor when possible.

Protect the head using the arms and hands. Get underneath something sturdy, if possible. If
something sturdy isnt present, position yourself against masonry walls, in a crouched position.

Shelter areas for the Company in Harrisonburg are as follows: the employee meeting room, the
pipe cafeteria, and the locker rooms.

Do not get in your car and attempt to drive away to outrun a tornado. Do not leave the premises
during a tornado warning.
