ApartheidOppressionSimulationInordertoletthestudentsgraspthetrueunfairnessand
oppressionexperiencedbythenativeAfricansduringapartheid,wearegoingtosplitupthe
classintogroupsproportionaltothenumberofpeoplewhoexperiencedapartheid.While
studentsareenteringtheroomatthebeginningofclass,theywillpickcardsatrandom.Each
cardwillgivethemarollforwhenthesimulationstarts.Twothirdsoftheclasswillrepresentthe
nativeAfricans,andwillbeforcedtomovetheirseatstoasmallpartoftheroomandsitallvery
closetogether.Theywillalsobeforcedtoleavealloftheirbelongingsbehind.Thissimulates
howthenativeswerebasicallyforcedintoslumsandreallycouldnotgetout.Theotherthirdof
theclasswillrepresentthewhites.TheyweretheminorityinSouthAfrica,howevertheyheldall
ofthepower.Thesestudentsarefreetowandertheroomthatisnotoccupiedbythenatives,
andcandowhatevertheywant.Thissimulationwilllastforapproximately7minutes,followed
bya510minutediscussionabouthowtheactivitywasrelevanttothelesson.(1217minutes)
